Scalp hyperkeratosis is common in childhood and adolescence. Diagnosis is affected by age, race, and history of infectious exposure, and associated symptoms including atopic features, alopecia, inflammatory nodules, presence and type of cutaneous lesions outside of the scalp, and nuchal lymphadenopathy. Tinea capitis is common in children with skin of color, especially black and Hispanic children. Coal tar has been used in dermatology for over a hundred years. It was the main therapeutic agent for the treatment of various skin orders before the introduction of topical steroid. Since the advent of topical steroid the use of coal tar has reduced considerably. It is still being used a lot in the treatment of psoriasis. In this paper I will describe how I use coal tar not only in psoriasis, which is well known, but also in acne, folliculitis, eczema and seborrheic dermatitis and vitiligo, which are less well known.

This review aims to provide a clinically useful update regarding the role of formaldehyde (FA) and its five main releasers (FRs) quaternium-15, diazolidinyl urea, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, and 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol (bronopol) in contact allergy and allergic contact dermatitis. These ubiquitous preservatives are still often present, and sometimes undeclared, in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, household detergents, and chemical (industrial) products. In Europe, the use of free FA and quaternium-15 in cosmetics is forbidden and contact allergy rates have been fou

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, pruritic inflammatory skin condition with a complex pathogenesis and variable clinical presentation, often overlapping with other dermatologic diseases. This article considers the differential diagnoses for AD, emphasizing the importance of accurately distinguishing it from both common and rare conditions. Among inflammatory dermatoses, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, allergic and irritant contact dermatitis, lichen simplex chronicus, and pityriasis rosea share overlapping features but can be differentiated based on history, distribution, and morphology.

Although erythroderma is a well-recognized entity in the adult age groups and has been studied by various authors, there is a paucity of studies on erythroderma in the pediatric age group. It poses a greater challenge to the dermatologist and pediatrician because of its potential life threatening nature. In a study conducted by us in a large Indian hospital to delineate the causes of neonatal and infantile erythroderma, the causes identified were infections (40%), ichthyosiform erythroderma (25%), atopic dermatitis (15%), infantile seborrheic dermatitis (10%) and unidentified (10%). In another

Along with the rising AIDS epidemic, the recognition of mucocutaneous lesions indicating HIV infection is important not only for dermatologists but also for general practitioners. During 36 months we prospectively followed 357 HIV-1-infected patients on a regular base, and all the dermatologic findings were evaluated statistically. Several skin problems such as seborrheic dermatitis, may occur early in HIV infection. Mollusca contagiosa, oral hairy leukoplakia and Kaposi's sarcoma are often clinical signs of marked disease progression with very low CD4-cell counts.
