Discriminative stimulus effects of dopaminergic agents in rhesus monkeys.

Recent reports have shown that treatment with dopamine reuptake inhibitors can selectively decrease responding maintained by low doses of cocaine in rhesus monkeys. This may occur because response-independent delivery of a reuptake inhibitor and response-dependent cocaine have common effects. One behavioral effect that dopamine reuptake inhibitors and cocaine share is their ability to serve as a discriminative stimulus. To compare discriminative effects of several dopaminergic agents with their ability to attenuate cocaine-maintained responding, three rhesus monkeys were first trained to discr

Tuning specificities to aliphatic odorants in mouse olfactory receptor neurons and their local distribution.

1. Odor responses to two homologous series of n-fatty acids (nFA) and n-aliphatic alcohols (nAA) with a straight chain of three to nine carbons were examined by measuring odor-induced [Ca2+]i increase in mouse olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) isolated by the tissue-printing method. 2. One-third of the ORNs responsive to nFA and/or nAA were alternately sensitive to either type of odorant. Their sensitivities were usually near maximal for one or two odorants and decreased with differences in the carbon chain length from the tuned odorants. 3. Two-thirds of the ORNs responsive to nFA and/or nAA

Decreased performance in a delayed alternation task by rats genetically deficient in vasopressin.

Acquisition and retention of a delayed alternation task by rats genetically deficient in vasopressin (AVP) due to the homozygous occurrence of the Brattleboro diabetes insipidus (DI) gene (M520/DI) were compared to the response of rats that were heterozygous (M520/HZ) or normal (M520/N) with respect to the DI gene. No significant difference in the adaptation to the apparatus was observed between the groups. However, the rate at which the M520/DI rats acquired the alternation task was significantly slower than the acquisition rates of M520/HZ and M520/N rats. In addition, the maximum intertrial

Potentiation of cathinone by caffeine and nikethamide.

The drug discrimination paradigm was employed to evaluate the effect of coadministration of both caffeine and nikethamide upon the discrimination of a low dose of cathinone. In rats trained to discriminate between 0.8 mg/kg l-cathinone and its vehicle in a two-lever food-motivated operant task, 0.2 mg/kg cathinone produced 29.2% of responses on the cathinone-appropriate lever. This lever was chosen in 0 and 50% of trials with 25 mg/kg nikethamide and 20 mg/kg caffeine, respectively. Coadministration of caffeine, nikethamide, or caffeine plus nikethamide with low-dose cathinone produced strong

Modulation of the behavioral effects of anticonvulsant drugs by an external discriminative stimulus in the pigeon.

The effects of the anticonvulsant drugs valproic acid, phenytoin, phenobarbital and diazepam were examined in pigeons performing under a fixed-consecutive-number schedule with and without an added external discriminative stimulus. Under these schedules, a reinforced response run consisted of responding between eight and 12 times on one response key (work key) and then responding once on a second response key (reinforced key). For one group of pigeons, an external discriminative stimulus signaled completion of the response requirement on the work key, whereas no stimulus change was programmed f

Evidence for non-receptor odor discrimination using neuroblastoma cells as a model for olfactory cells.

The mouse neuroblastoma cell (N-18 clone), which is independent of an olfactory cell, was depolarized by 20 odorants examined, suggesting that specific proteins are not required for reception of odorants. The mechanism of non-receptor-mediated odor discrimination was examined using the N-18 cell. Changes in the membrane fluidity of the cell induced by adsorption of odorants were measured with various fluorescence probes, which monitor the fluidity at the different depth and in the different phase of the membrane. The profiles of the membrane fluidity changes monitored with these dyes were diff

Stimulus control by diazepam of behavior maintained under fixed-ratio stimulus-shock termination schedules in rats.

The stimulus control of behavior by diazepam (1.0 mg/kg) was investigated where responding was maintained under fixed-ratio (FR) schedules of stimulus-shock termination in rats. The size of the FR requirement was either 1, 5, 10, or 20 responses. At each FR requirement, dose-effect curves were determined for diazepam, flurazepam, pentobarbital and cyproheptadine. Diazepam-like discriminative stimuli were produced by flurazepam and pentobarbital but not by cyproheptadine. The magnitude of the FR requirement had no significant effect on the dose-effect curves for percentage of responses emitted

Halstead-Reitan Category Test in bipolar and unipolar affective disorders. Relationship to age and phase of illness.

Unipolar and bipolar affectively disturbed patients were administered the Halstead-Reitan category test when in an unmedicated acutely depressed phase and during recovery. Controls consisted of normal volunteers and spouses. Spouse controls were tested at intervals similar to those of the patients and were utilized to control for age, sex, education, and socioeconomic status. Results showed that depressives in the acute depressed state made significantly more errors did controls. Older bipolar patients made significantly more errors than did controls. Older bipolar patients made significantly

A comparison of aphasic and non-brain-injured adults on a dichotic CV-syllable listening task.

A dichotic CV-syllable listening task was administered to a group of eleven non-brain-injured adults and to a group of eleven adult aphasics. The results of this study may be summarized as follows: 1)The group of non-brain-injured adults showed a slight right ear advantage for dichotically presented CV-syllables. 2)In comparison with the control group the asphasic group showed a bilateral deficit in response to the dichotic CV-syllables, superimposed on a non-significant right ear advantage. 3) The asphasic group demonstrated a great deal of intersubject variability on the dichotic task with s

The effects of age on the diagnostic utility of the rollover phenomenon.

Articulation curves were constructed for 32 elderly listeners with hearing according to previously established decadal age norms. Each function was specifically examined for the presence of rollover, a previously determined indicator of retrocochlear pathology. Rollover exhibited by six subjects was an age-related phenomenon. It is suggested that normal neural degeneration concomitant with the aging process is responsible for this auditory behavior and that clinical significance of the rollover phenomenon is greatly reduced when dealing with the aged population. Implications for the use of the

A context analysis of psychological states prior to petit mal EEF paroxysms.

This is the first report in the literature of an application of the rigorous symptom-context method for determining the nature of the psychological antecedents of petit mal EEG paroxysmal activity. The activity is defined by the presence of a 3 cycle/second spike and wave on the EEG which is recorded concurrently while the patient is speaking his thoughts freely during interviews. The content of the patient's speech before each petit mal episode is compared with the content of speech during nonparoxysmal periods. Three petit mal patients were examined in this way for four sessions each. (Total

Engram Size Varies with Learning and Reflects Memory Content and Precision.

Memories are rarely acquired under ideal conditions, rendering them vulnerable to profound omissions, errors, and ambiguities. Consistent with this, recent work using context fear conditioning has shown that memories formed after inadequate learning time display a variety of maladaptive properties, including overgeneralization to similar contexts. However, the neuronal basis of such poor learning and memory imprecision remains unknown. Using c-fos to track neuronal activity in male mice, we examined how these learning-dependent changes in context fear memory precision are encoded in hippocampa

The amygdalo-nigrostriatal network is critical for an optimal temporal performance.

The amygdalo-nigrostriatal (ANS) network plays an essential role in enhanced attention to significant events. Interval timing requires attention to temporal cues. We assessed rats having a disconnected ANS network, due to contralateral lesions of the medial central nucleus of the amygdala (CEm) and dopaminergic afferents to the lateral striatum, as compared to controls (sham and ipsilateral lesions of CEm and dopaminergic afferents to LS) in a temporal bisection task. ANS disconnection induced poorer temporal precision and increased response latencies to a short duration. The present results r

The relationships between HIV stigma, emotional status, and emotional regulation among HIV-affected children in rural China.

Children affected by HIV/AIDS have unique psychosocial needs that often go unaddressed in traditional treatment approaches. They are more likely than unaffected peers to encounter stigma, including overt discriminatory behaviors, as well as stereotyped attitudes. In addition, HIV-affected children are at risk for experiencing negative affect, including sadness and depression. Previous studies have identified a link between HIV stigma and the subsequent emotional status of children affected by HIV/AIDS. However, limited data are available regarding protective psychological factors that can miti

Voice processing in dementia: a neuropsychological and neuroanatomical analysis.

Voice processing in neurodegenerative disease is poorly understood. Here we undertook a systematic investigation of voice processing in a cohort of patients with clinical diagnoses representing two canonical dementia syndromes: temporal variant frontotemporal lobar degeneration (n = 14) and Alzheimer's disease (n = 22). Patient performance was compared with a healthy matched control group (n = 35). All subjects had a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment including measures of voice perception (vocal size, gender, speaker discrimination) and voice recognition (familiarity, identification,

Common neural systems associated with the recognition of famous faces and names: an event-related fMRI study.

Person recognition can be accomplished through several modalities (face, name, voice). Lesion, neurophysiology and neuroimaging studies have been conducted in an attempt to determine the similarities and differences in the neural networks associated with person identity via different modality inputs. The current study used event-related functional-MRI in 17 healthy participants to directly compare activation in response to randomly presented famous and non-famous names and faces (25 stimuli in each of the four categories). Findings indicated distinct areas of activation that differed for faces

Lesions of the medial striatum in monkeys produce perseverative impairments during reversal learning similar to those produced by lesions of the orbitofrontal cortex.

The ability to switch responding between two visual stimuli based on their changing relationship with reward is dependent on the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC). OFC lesions in humans, monkeys, and rats disrupt performance on a common test of this ability, the visual serial discrimination reversal task. This finding is of particular significance to our understanding of psychiatric disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and schizophrenia, in which behavioral inflexibility is a prominent symptom. Although OFC dysfunction can occur in these disorders, there is considerable evidence for
