OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The aim of the present study was to visualize the flow direction of blood in the extraosseous part of the vein of the vestibular aqueduct (VVA) and to explore the effect of an induced obstruction in the distal part of the VVA before it merges with the sigmoid sinus. The endolymphatic sac has been implicated as a potential endocrine gland, which venules drain to the VVA. A reversal of the direction of flow in the VVA toward the inner ear could, through vestibular arteriovenous anastomosis, cause portal circulation in the inner ear.

We report two cases of lymphocytoma cutis caused by pierced earrings, with the results of patch tests and X-ray microanalyses on electron microscopy. We detected zinc through scanning electron microscopy from the specimen of Case 1 and gold and titanium through transmission electron microscopy from Case 2. This is the first report to demonstrate the presence of metal fragments in the lesion, which may suggest the remanence of metal for 20 years, bringing about persistent allergic reaction.

Choristoma is a mass of tissue histologically normal for an organ or part of the body other than the site at which it is located. A rare case of ectopic salivary gland choristoma in the middle ear is described in a 14-year-old girl whose only symptom was a 55 dB conductive hearing loss. We conducted a study to evaluate the use of a pediatric rigid otoendoscope for determining the extent of middle ear disease and for assessing ossicular integrity and mobility during tympanoplasty. Body piercing has become a fashionable trend in western culture. High ear piercing is common among the adolescent population and complications from this procedure although uncommon can be permanently disfiguring. We describe a case of perichondritis after high ear piercing in an adolescent male. A review of the history of body piercing, complications, risk factors, and treatment is presented.

Although there are numerous publications in the literature describing the wide range of diagnosis, classifications and treatment of malformations of the hearing apparatus, even more variations can be found in clinical practice. Indeed, each individual case is unique as far as concerns pathogenesis, clinical course and treatment. The case reported herein describes a 12-year-old boy affected by cranio-facial dysmorphism and monolateral conductive hearing loss in the right ear: followed from radiological diagnosis--carried out to study a malformation of the ear pinna--to surgical treatment.

OBJECTIVES: The Pierre Robin triad (PRT) consists of micrognathia-retrognathia, glossoptosis, and an oval or cleft palate. The goal of this study was to identify patterns of similarity to and differences from the two previous temporal bone studies of the PRT.
METHODS: Seven children with the PRT (ages, 45 minutes to 2 years; gestational ages, 41 to 43 weeks) were studied. Thirteen temporal bones were decalcified, sectioned at a thickness of 20 microm, and studied by light microscopy.

We report here a case of a carcinoid tumor observed in the middle ear (ME), which was initially diagnosed as ME adenoma. The patient was a 64-year-old woman who was first seen in our hospital in March 2001 for a 7-month hearing loss. On otoscopic examination, a whitish mass could be observed through the intact tympanic membrane. TBX1 is thought to be a critical gene in the pathogenesis of del22q11/DiGeorge syndrome (DGS). Two patients, a man aged 50 and a woman aged 61 years, complained about otalgia without a hearing disorder. Both patients exhibited slight mucosal redness of the upper airway at examination of the ear, nose, and throat, but no other abnormalities.
