Background: The inlay cartilage butterfly myringoplasty is a simple technique with few complications for closure of tympanic membrane defects introduced by Eavey 1998, but still not often used. Its advantages consist in avoiding of exposure the tympanic cavity and possible blunting, option to operate both ears at once, safe local anaesthesia, reduction of operation time and cost, minimal postoperative care and patient comfort. Patients and Methods: We operated 10 patients using a to date not described simple cartilage transplant without perichondrium. Reason, localisation, extent and duration

Currently, the predominant hypothesis explains cellular differentiation as an essentially genetic intracellular process. The goal of this paper is to suggest that cell growth and differentiation may be, simply, the result of physical and chemical constraints. Bone growth occurs at the level of cartilage conjunction (growth plate) in a zone of lesser constrain. It appears that this growth also induces muscle, tendon, nerve and skin elongation. This cartilage growth by itself seems to explain the elongation of the hand. Growth stops at puberty likely because of feed-back from an increasing muscl

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: There is no consensus among clinicians regarding the best treatment strategy for adhesive otitis media (AdOM). It is common practice to only intervene in the presence of recurrent infections or significant conductive hearing loss. In an attempt to provide evidence regarding the efficacy and safety of surgical intervention, we have analyzed the long-term outcome of tympanoplasty for AdOM .
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study.
METHODS: From January 2013 to April 2014, 57 patients with AdOM (60 ears) who fit our criteria for tympanoplasty were recruited and underwent tympanop

Septic arthritis is a serious condition resulting in rapid destruction of articular cartilage and potential sepsis. Bacterial invasion of a joint occurs most commonly as a result of haematogenous spread from a distant infection. However, an otogenic source of this transient bacteraemia and resultant septic arthritis has not yet been reported in the literature. We report a case of acute septic arthritis of the knee with Streptococcus pyogenes, secondary to acute otitis media of the ear.

Leishmania sp. is an intracellular parasite that causes a variable degree of clinical manifestations, especially in the skin. We present the case of a 38-year-old male with a chronic history of mucocutaneous disease present since childhood that generated deformity, loss of cartilage in the ears and nose, and scarring that limited his range of motion. The parasite was identified as L. mexicana mexicana. The patient was treated with a 3-month course of oral miltefosine with overwhelming results.

Relapsing polychondritis, once thought to be a very rare disease, is being recognized with increasing frequency. It is characterized by inflammation of cartilaginous structures throughout the body. In some cases, the eye and ear are involved; aortic aneurysms develop in a minority of patients. The cartilages of the airway are affected in more than 50% of all cases, and the resulting stenotic lesions can be life-threatening. Radiographic study of the airway is of great value in detection and evaluation of upper respiratory involvement.

Over the last 100 years, more than 200 different methods have been described to correct prominent ear deformity. These techniques revolved around various combinations of postauricular incision, cartilage scoring, and strategic suture placement to reapproximate the antihelical fold and correct angular deformity. In the last two decades, fascial flap techniques have become prominent in otoplasty. This article gives a comprehensive review of the different surgical techniques employed to construct fascial flaps and their contributions to otoplasty.

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare disease of undetermined cause. The most frequently seen symptom is redness and swelling of cartilaginous ear, followed by cartilage inflammation elsewhere in the body and inflammation of special sense organs. This report describes recurrent attacks of relapsing polychondritis in one patient, who responded to low doses of corticosteroid therapy. The great relevance of cutaneous vasculitis in our patient, lead us to suggest that PR may fall in to the spectrum of systemic vasculitis.

Ear amputations are common in emergency departments as the auricle's protrusion from the lateral aspect of the head makes it particularly susceptible to trauma. Of the numerous approaches for auricle injuries, the classic methods include microsurgical replantation, primary reattachment, composite graft, retroauricular pocket principle, secondary reconstruction with rib cartilage, and methods using postauricular flap. The success of the operation depends largely on choosing the appropriate surgical procedure since many factors can influence surgical outcome. There is no 1 gold standard techniqu

Introduction Chronic otitis media is a widely prevalent condition in developing countries and is a cause of correctable hearing loss. The most frequent ossicular chain defect found during surgery for chronic otitis media has been a discontinuity of the incudostapedial joint. This study observes the effect of incudostapedial reconstruction using conchal cartilage on the hearing of the patient. Objectives To evaluate improvement in hearing by incudostapedial reconstruction using conchal cartilage interposition graft in tympanoplasty and to identify the independent factors associated with erosi

BACKGROUND: Chest deformity is a potential complication associated with auricular reconstruction using autologous costal cartilage. The impact of the incision size employed for costal cartilage harvesting on chest deformities remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between the incision size used for harvesting costal cartilage and the occurrence of chest deformities.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed patients who underwent ear reconstruction using autologous costal cartilage between June 2021 and September 2022. The patients were categorized into two groups based o

The current gold standard for auricular reconstruction after microtia or ear trauma is the autologous cartilage graft with an autologous skin flap overlay. Harvesting autologous cartilage requires an additional surgery that may result in donor area complications. In addition, autologous cartilage is limited and the auricular reconstruction requires complex sculpting, which requires excellent clinical skill and is very time consuming. This work explores the use of 3D printing technology to fabricate bioactive artificial auricular cartilage using chondrocyte-laden gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) an

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare autoimmune disease causing inflammation in cartilaginous structures and other tissues throughout the body. Negative-pressure pulmonary edema (NPPE) due to laryngeal swelling from relapsing polychondritis is rare and has not been reported. Here, we report a case of relapsing polychondritis in an 18-y-old female who presented with recurrent NPPE and acute respiratory failure, which was diagnosed initially as ARDS during the influenza season. She underwent an emergent tracheotomy to relieve the upper airway obstruction resulting from severe laryngeal edema. A ch

INTRODUCTION: In our previous report, we described a surgical technique for cochlear implantation in canal wall down (CWD) ears. Specifically, this involved extending the endaural incision superiorly, harvesting a large temporal fascia flap, completely removing the tympanic epithelium, inserting the electrode array, obliterating the middle ear cavity with the temporal fascia flap, and sealing the external auditory canal with a tragal cartilage plug. This report details the safe application of this technique in a patient with severe ear malformation and suspected CHARGE syndrome, supplemented w
