Association of Long-term exposure to air pollution and residential greenness with lipid profile: Mediating role of inflammation.

Lipidemic effect of air pollutants are still inconsistent and their joint effects are neglected. Meanwhile, identified inflammation pathways in animal have not been applied in epidemiological studies, and beneficial effect of residential greenness remained unclear. Therefore, we used data from typically air-polluted Chinese cities to answer these questions. Particulate matter (PM) with a diameter of ≤ 1 µm (PM1), PM with a diameter of ≤ 2.5 µm (PM2.5), PM with a diameter of ≤ 10 µm (PM10), sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ozone (O3) were predicted by space-time extremely rand

Maternal smoking and infantile gastrointestinal dysregulation: the case of colic.

BACKGROUND: Infants' healthy growth and development are predicated, in part, on regular functioning of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. In the first 6 months of life, infants typically double their birth weights. During this period of intense growth, the GI tract needs to be highly active and to function optimally. Identifying modifiable causes of GI tract dysregulation is important for understanding the pathophysiologic processes of such dysregulation, for identifying effective and efficient interventions, and for developing early prevention and health promotion strategies. One such modifiabl

Epidemiological Assessment of Benzodiazepine Dependence via Pharmacist-Led EMR Review in Pain and Palliative Care Institution.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Benzodiazepines (BZDs) are used routinely in cases requiring sedation for anxiety, insomnia, and procedures that require pain management, and daily use of these agents may extend over several months; therefore, monitoring patients is essential to reduce the risk of developing dependence. However, the high patient volume in pain and palliative-care settings often limits physicians' ability to both conduct consultations and perform comprehensive evaluations. In this context, the pharmacist plays a key role in supporting patient care by contributing professional activities

Microplastics across marine food webs: bioaccumulation, exposome interactions, and emerging oncogenic risks.

Microplastic pollution is a major environmental problem affecting ecosystems, wildlife and people worldwide. Microplastics are solid synthetic polymer particles > 5 mm, insoluble in water and potentially containing functional additives and adsorbed chemical contaminants. They originate from bulk industrial products and from the degradation of large plastic debris (EFSA CONTAM Panel, in EFSA Journal 14, 2016). The extent of the contamination is critical, with global plastic production projected to exceed 1.2 billion metric tons per year by 2060 and an estimated 170 trillion plastic particles in

Erucic acid, a component of Lorenzo's oil and PPAR-δ ligand modifies C6 glioma growth and toxicity of doxorubicin. Experimental data and a comprehensive literature analysis.

BACKGROUND: PPAR-δ is a transcription factor which has crucial roles in stimulating oligodendroglial differentiation and myelination and its activation was also shown to differentiate malignant C6 glioma cells into oligodendrocytes. OBJECTIVE: One of the ligands of PPAR-δ is erucic acid (EA), an edible omega-9 fatty acid consumed more by Asian populations and exists highly in Chinese womens milk. There exist epidemiological evidence that pediatric brain tumor incidence is among the lowest in the Chinese population. EA is also an ingredient of Lorenzo's oil used against adrenoleukodystrophy, a

Long-term, low-dose lithium treatment does not impair renal function in the elderly: a 2-year randomized, placebo-controlled trial followed by single-blind extension.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies evaluated the disease-modifying properties of lithium in mild cognitive impairment and dementia. Although potentially effective for these purposes, chronic lithium use in regard to safety in the elderly needs to be better explored. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of long-term lithium treatment at subtherapeutic doses on renal function in older adults. Secondary aims were to evaluate the clinical safety and tolerability of this treatment and its effects on thyroid, immune, and glycemic functions. METHOD: Between February 2007 and October 2011, a 2-year randomized,

The Role of VEGF-C and VEGF-D in Coronary Artery Disease: From Molecular Pathophysiology to Therapeutic Lymphangiogenesis.

Traditional therapeutic strategies for coronary artery disease (CAD) primarily focus on arterial perfusion, largely overlooking the critical role of the cardiac lymphatic system in maintaining myocardial fluid, lipid, and immune homeostasis. The vascular endothelial growth factor C (VEGF-C) and VEGF-D/VEGF receptor-3 (VEGFR3) signaling axes are the primary drivers of lymphangiogenesis. However, recent clinical and mechanistic insights suggest that these two homologous ligands exert highly distinct and divergent pathophysiological roles under ischemic stress. This review synthesizes the current

Lifestyle Factors Associated With Reflux Symptoms Without Erosive Esophagitis in Japanese Individuals With and Without Obesity Undergoing Health Checkups: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Non-erosive reflux disease (NERD) is the most prevalent gastroesophageal reflux disease phenotype. However, lifestyle factors associated with reflux symptoms in the absence of erosive esophagitis, a presentation often classified as NERD in epidemiological studies, remain underexplored in Japan. This study aimed to investigate lifestyle factors associated with reflux symptoms without erosive esophagitis, stratified by obesity status. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 2116 Japanese adults undergoing annual health checkups, including upper endoscopy and lifestyle quest

Modeling epidemic and economic trade-offs under alternative COVID-19 isolation exit scenarios in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Scientific evidence should guide adjustments to isolation policies as part of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) exit strategies. However, such evidence was limited when these strategies were implemented. This study retrospectively evaluated the relaxation of isolation policies in South Korea, aiming to generate evidence to support policy decisions in future pandemic scenarios. METHODS: We developed an age-stratified deterministic vaccination-extended Susceptible-Exposed-Infectious-Recovered model to simulate counterfactual scenarios related to isolation policy changes during the

Factors associated with alcohol abstinence in North American Indigenous youth: Age, gender, and cultural identity.

BACKGROUND: North American Indigenous youth are at increased risk for alcohol use, yet little literature explores why some choose to abstain from alcohol use. This study aimed to: characterize the reasons why Indigenous youth abstain from alcohol; explore how these reasons vary by age, sex, and whether or not the youth reside on or off a reservation; and examine how reasons for abstaining may mediate the relationship between cultural identity and intentions to drink 5 years in the future. METHODS: Data were sourced from the Substance Use Among American Indian Youth: Epidemiology and Etiology,

Bridging the Gap: How environmental exposures compromise male fertility and clinical Outlook.

The growing prevalence of male infertility has become a significant clinical and public health issue, with environmental exposures increasingly recognized as a major modifiable risk factor. This review synthesizes current evidence within the framework of the "male reproductive exposome", linking lifelong exposure to environmental toxicants-ranging from endocrine-disrupting chemicals to emerging contaminants-to clinically relevant outcomes such as impaired semen parameters, altered reproductive hormone profiles, and an increased risk of testicular dysfunction. We critically evaluate the concept

Immunoglobulin subclass profiles in depression: Insights from a general population study.

The immune system plays a crucial role in defending the body against harmful invaders, with immunoglobulins being key players in pathogen recognition and neutralization. Immunoglobulin dysregulation is linked to various diseases, including autoimmune disorders, immunodeficiencies, and allergies. Previous studies suggest that depression can alter immune function by modifying immunoglobulin production, which may contribute to increased vulnerability to infections and autoimmune diseases. In this study, we examined the association between the immunoglobulin (Ig) subclasses IgA, IgG, IgM, and IgE

Prevalence and risk factors of human trichostrongylosis in Satun, southern Thailand.

Trichostrongylus spp., zoonotic soil-transmitted nematodes, affect both livestock and humans globally. In Thailand, human trichostrongylosis has been reported, but no systematic study examining livestock and humans in the same locality has been conducted. This study aimed to address this gap in Satun Province, southern Thailand by characterizing the disease's epidemiologic status among livestock, farmers, and the environment using both microscopic and molecular techniques. Human risk factors were assessed via questionnaires. Stool samples were collected from livestock farmers, their families,

Cumulative risk assessment as the pathway to public health protection for behavioral neurotoxicity.

The formulation of adverse outcome pathways (AOPs) based on high-throughput in vitro new approach methods linking biochemical/mechanistic data with an apical endpoint considered an adverse outcome (AO), is increasingly proposed to accelerate the process of risk assessment for environmental chemical exposures. While a laudable goal, this approach ignores the extensive evidence demonstrating context-dependence of neurotoxicological consequences, including behavioral toxicity of chemical exposures. Such contextual modifiers can include environmental conditions (poverty, psychosocial stress, behav

Sex- and estrous-specific effects of paradoxical sleep deprivation: neurobehavioral changes and hippocampal neuroinflammation.

With millions suffering from sleep disorders in today's society, a better understanding of sleep disruption related to cognitive outcomes is urgently needed. To that end, a preclinical investigation into the effects of paradoxical sleep deprivation (PSD) on neurobehavioral outcomes and associated hippocampal neuroinflammation was conducted in male and female rats. Due to epidemiological identification of sex differences in many aspects of sleep disorders, sex and estrous-cycle stage factors were investigated. Sprague-Dawley rats underwent 120 h of PSD using a modified multiple-platform "flower

Immune impacts of fire smoke exposure.

Exposure to fire smoke has become a global health concern and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. There is a lack of understanding of the specific immune mechanisms involved in smoke exposure, with preventive and targeted interventions needed. After exposure to fire smoke, which includes PM2.5, toxic metals and perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, epidemiology-based studies have demonstrated increases in respiratory (for example, asthma exacerbation), cardiac (for example, myocardial infarction, arrhythmias), neurological (for example, stroke) and pregnancy-related
