INTRODUCTION: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a well-known sequela after an elbow injury and is widely studied given the associated morbidity. The anatomic location of HO development for specific elbow injuries has not been reported. The purpose of this study was to describe the precise, anatomic location of HO development after different peri-articular elbow injuries.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed for patients with peri-articular elbow fracture and/or dislocation who underwent an elbow contracture release. The injuries were grouped into coronal shear distal humerus/AO …

CASE: A 37-year-old man presented with an absent right elbow joint secondary to trauma, subsequent ankylosis, total elbow arthroplasty (TEA), and TEA explantation after infection. The patient also had a contralateral complete brachial plexus injury, but an intact elbow joint. Given that the patient had a functional right hand/wrist, composite vascularized autograft elbow transplant was performed from left to right upper extremity. Four years postoperatively, the patient could independently complete activities of daily living.
CONCLUSION: This case is the first to report composite vascularized…

INTRODUCTION: Painful pronation (PD), also known as "nursemaid's elbow", is a common injury caused by abrupt longitudinal traction of the hand while the forearm is pronated and the elbow extended.
OBJECTIVE: to describe a sample of patients diagnosed with painful pronation and the different reduction tech niques used for this pathology.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: retrospective study of patients who visited the emergency department of a referral hospital, from January 2018 to September 2019. Patients under 7 years of age consulting due to a condition compatible with PD were included. We recorded de…

Erosion of the articular cartilage of the medial compartment of the elbow (the humeroulnar articulation) secondary to incongruency associated with elbow dysplasia or traumatic injury has been termed, medial compartment disease. When nonsurgical strategies to manage osteoarthritis (OA) fail, surgical solutions may be warranted. Surgical strategies reduce pain through off-loading of the medial compartment by load-shifting osteotomies of the humerus or ulna. Other strategies involve replacement of portions or all of the articular surface of the medial compartment. With global elbow joint OA (medi…

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association2019eng
Elbow osteoarthritis is a difficult clinical problem. As it is characterized primarily by osteophyte formation, it seems that simple removal of those osteophytes, release of the capsule, and removal of loose bodies would suffice to restore a normal range of motion. However, unfortunately, this is not always the case. Open and arthroscopic treatment yields similar results in experienced hands, but patients may have some degree of recurrence or motion loss. To improve outcomes, release of the posterior band of the medial collateral ligament and transposition of the ulnar nerve could be thoughtfu…

BACKGROUND: Elbow contracture is a sequelae of elbow trauma in pediatric patients. Arthroscopic contracture release has been shown to provide equivalent results to open contracture release with less associated morbidity and complications in the adult population. However, open contracture release is still commonly utilized in pediatric patients. The goal of this study is to determine the clinical results and safety profile of arthroscopic elbow contracture release in the pediatric population.
METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients 18 years of age and younger who underwent arthroscopic…

INTRODUCTION: Septic elbow arthritis is a rare disease, especially in children. The aim of this study was to report the functional outcome of our pediatric population with both demographic and microbiological features.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all our cases of pediatric septic elbow arthritis between 2007 and 2017. Demographic, microbiological, biological, and radiological features were analyzed. Functional outcome was evaluated according to the Morrey Elbow Performance Score (MEPS).
RESULTS: In total, 14 cases were reviewed. The mean age was 9 years. Microbiological findings rev…

Valgus extension overload syndrome (VEO) is the result of supraphysiologic stresses placed across the posterior elbow during pitching. Following failure of nonoperative measures, surgical options consist of arthroscopic or limited incision posteromedial decompression. Although technically challenging, arthroscopic treatment offers many advantages over open treatment, including improved joint visualization, decreased soft-tissue dissection, decreased postoperative pain, and quicker rehabilitation. Arthroscopic treatment of VEO consists of soft tissue and bony debridement, loose body removal, an…

Recently there has been increased year-round sports participation among children and adolescents with limited to no rest periods. This has led to increases in pediatric repetitive stress injuries, once considered a rarity. Whether in the throwing athlete or in the athlete that experiences repetitive axial loading; increased medial tension and overload syndromes can lead to stress reactions and fractures. This occurs in the developing athlete due to the bone being weaker than the surrounding tendons and ligaments. The medial elbow is a high stress area and is susceptible to many conditions incl…

BACKGROUND: Failure of total elbow arthroplasty is more common than after other major joint arthroplasties and is often a result of aseptic loosening, peri-prosthetic infection, fracture and instability. Infection can be a devastating complication, yet there are no established guidelines for the pre-operative diagnosis of total elbow peri-prosthetic infection. This is because pre-operative clinical, radiographic and biochemical tests are often unreliable.
METHODS: Using three case examples, a standardized protocol for the clinical and arthroscopic assessment of the painful total elbow arthrop…

To translate and culturally adapt the Mayo Elbow Performance Score (MEPS), a widely used instrument for evaluating disability associated with elbow injuries, into Turkish (MEPS-T) and to determine psychometric properties of the translated version. The MEPS was translated into Turkish using published methodological guidelines. The measurement properties of the MEPS-T (construct validity and floor and ceiling effects) were tested in 91 patients with elbow pathology. The reproducibility of the MEPS-T was tested in 59 patients over 7-14 days. The responsiveness of the MEPS-T was tested in a subgro…

Myositis ossificans traumatica is an unusual complication following a muscle contusion injury. A significantly large myositic mass causing ankylosis of the elbow is even rarer. We report a 13-year-old boy who presented with a 14-month history of a fixed elbow with no movement and a palpable bony mass in the anterior aspect of the elbow. He had sustained significant trauma to the affected limb 1 month prior to onset of symptoms, which was managed by native massage and bandaging for 4 weeks. The clinicoradiological diagnosis was suggestive of myositis ossificans, and the myositic mass was comple…

BACKGROUND: Elbow arthroscopy is increasingly used to treat complex pathology. The purpose of this study was to investigate early complication rates after elbow arthroscopy and identify risk factors for adverse events.
METHODS: Consecutive elbow arthroscopies performed during a 13-year period were reviewed, identifying early perioperative complications. Major complications included deep infection, permanent nerve injury, or complications requiring additional anesthesia. Minor complications included superficial wound complications and transient nerve palsies. Complications were compared with a…

A case of total elbow dislocation with significant swelling and loss of distal pulses during police arrest is described. To date, this specific injury in relation to police arrest has not been described in the literature. Whilst attempting to remove the detainee from a public transport vehicle, the patient and the officers involved fell to the ground with his arm slightly flexed. He was handcuffed to the rear and taken to the police office. Whilst there, it was noted that his left elbow was swelling dramatically and he complained of pain. The detainee and officers attended the emergency room a…

Intra-articular osteoid osteoma (OO) is a rare and difficult diagnosis. We report the case of an 11-year-old boy who presented with inflammatory monoarticular arthritis in the left elbow. This monoarthritis was resistant to all types of treatment. He had an OO, diagnosed late because the first symptoms developed subsequent to the ablation of a wart in the same elbow and were suggestive of arthritis.
