Bipolar dislocation injury of the forearm is rarely documented. It is a combined forearm injury with trauma on the elbow side and on the side of the wrist joint. We describe two different cases of this complex dislocation. The first patient suffered from a Monteggia-like dislocation fracture with transscaphoid dislocation of the wrist. The second person had an acute longitudinal radioulnar membrane dissociation after elbow dislocation with an additional scapholunate tendon rupture. The difficult management of these injuries is illustrated by these cases.

Chondro-epiphyseal separation of the distal humerus is a rare injury, and when it occurs in the newborn, it may be difficult to diagnose and is easily mistaken for a dislocation of the elbow. The unimpressive clinical appearance of such an injury of the elbow in an infant, as well as the absence of ossific nuclei of the distal humerus in the newborn, are responsible for the dilemma in making the diagnosis. Ultrasonography, a readily available, non-invasive technique, can be used to evaluate the non-ossified epiphysis about the elbow of infants to demonstrate dislocations, fractures, and physea

We treated a patient with a rare combination of ipsilateral fractures of the distal and proximal ends of the radius. A man aged 42 years had simultaneous fractures of the distal and proximal ends of the radius (radial neck) following a roadside accident. The distal end fracture of the radius was treated with surgical reduction and T-plate volar fixation, and the undisplaced radial neck fracture was treated by an above elbow splintage for 2 weeks. The elbow mobilization was started at 2 weeks. The distal radius was protected for another 4 weeks in a below elbow functional brace. Ipsilateral pro

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the upper limb anthropometric dimensions and a history of dominant upper limb injury in tennis players. Dominant and non-dominant wrist, forearm, elbow and arm circumferences, along with a history of dominant upper limb injuries, were assessed in 147 male and female players, assigned to four groups based on location of injury: wrist (n = 9), elbow (n = 25), shoulder (n = 14) and healthy players (n = 99). From anthropometric dimensions, bilateral differences in circumferences and in proportions were calculated. The wrist group pr

The flow of mechanical energy of segmental motion during baseball pitching is poorly understood, particularly in relation to the valgus torque at the elbow which is prone to pitching-related injuries. This study employed an induced power analysis to determine the components of muscle and velocity-dependent torques that contribute to the power of throwing arm segments when the elbow is under valgus load during the arm-cocking phase of pitching. The 3D throwing kinematics and kinetics of 10 adult pitchers were included in this analysis. Pitchers threw with a maximum elbow valgus torque of 73 ± 2

PURPOSE: Restoring elbow extension in tetraplegia and brachial plexus injuries is critical for improving hand function. In chronic lesions, the traditional method is based on the transfer of the posterior deltoid elongated by a tendon graft to the triceps. Tendon grafts need a prolonged immobilization period to avoid stretching at the muscle-tendon junction. To avoid the use of tendon grafts, we propose harvesting the middle and posterior deltoid muscle along with the entire length of the lateral intermuscular septum, facilitating direct suturing to the triceps tendon.
METHODS: Before surgery

Nerve injury about the elbow is a commonly reported problem after upper extremity trauma and surgery. Understanding the complete workup and management of these injuries is crucial in preserving upper extremity function and ensuring high-grade nerve injuries are diagnosed and treated in a timely manner. Assessment begins with a thorough history and physical examination, along with required imaging to evaluate bony or vascular injury as needed. Patients with neurological deficits in the surgical field of bony fixation or evidence of high-grade nerve injury on imaging may be candidates for early

The physical examination of the thrower's elbow presents the clinician with the clinical challenge of differentially diagnosing specific pathologies. The examination should include a thorough history and a well-organized physical examination, which relies on an extensive knowledge of the functional anatomy of the elbow. The components of an elbow examination include inspection/observation, palpation of bony and soft tissues, range of motion assessment, resisted muscle testing (both manual and mechanical), neurologic testing, and special tests. The special tests commonly performed on the throwe

PURPOSE: Pinning of pediatric elbow fractures has been shown to be a safe procedure with a low complication profile. This study identified patients who underwent cartilage surgery for elbow osteochondral lesions or osteochondritis dissecans who had prior ipsilateral elbow pinning.
METHODS: Records of patients who underwent ipsilateral cartilage surgery for osteochondritis dissecans and prior percutaneous pinning for elbow fractures were identified. Demographics were compiled and the clinical, radiographic, and surgical results were tabulated for patients with at least 1-year of follow-up from

PURPOSE: Vascularized nerve grafts are indicated for the repair of large nerve defects. In brachial plexus injuries, the poor prognosis for functional hand reconstruction when the lower roots are avulsed makes the ulnar nerve a potential donor for vascularized nerve grafts. We report on the results we obtained with reconstruction of elbow flexion using long pedicled ulnar nerve grafts that connected the C5 root to the musculocutaneous nerve.
METHODS: We prospectively studied 8 young adults with complete brachial plexus palsy with avulsion of the lower roots, who had surgical repair an average

BACKGROUND: Humeral retroversion is greater in the dominant shoulder than in the nondominant shoulder in baseball players. However, the effect of different baseball positions during childhood on humeral retroversion remains unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the following: (1) the relationship between humeral retroversion and baseball positions played during elementary and junior-high schools; (2) the association between humeral retroversion and the prevalence of pain during the medical checkup and self-reported history of injuries in the dominant shoulder or elbow.

INTRODUCTION: Comminuted fractures of the proximal ulna are severe injuries often associated with bone and ligament injuries of the elbow joint (Monteggia lesion, radial head fractures, dislocation of the elbow). The treatment of these fractures is very demanding and the functional results often fairly mediocre due to associated injuries. Based on a single-center retrospective study, we report the results of the treatment of these fractures fixed using a double-plate technique. The aim was to evaluate the feasibility and reliability of this fixation mode and to compare it with other fractures

OBJECT: Adult upper trunk brachial plexus injuries result in significant disability. Several surgical treatment strategies exist, including nerve grafting, nerve transfers, and a combination of both approaches. However, no existing data clearly indicate the most successful strategy for restoring elbow flexion and shoulder abduction in these patients. The authors reviewed the literature to compare outcomes of the three surgical repair techniques listed above to determine the optimal approach to traumatic injury to the upper brachial plexus in adults.
METHODS: Both PubMed and EMBASE databases w

A case of brachial artery rupture following compound dislocation of the elbow is reported. Arterial injury is a well-known complication of a supracondylar fracture of the humerus, but is very rare in association with elbow dislocation. A reversed saphenous vein graft was used for treatment of the arterial injury and is the recommended method of management.

Three-quarters of elite and recreational sport climbers will suffer upper extremity injuries. Approximately 60% of these injuries will involve the hand and wrist, the other 40% will be equally divided between the elbow and the shoulder. Most injuries will be tendonopathies secondary to strains, microtrauma or flexor retinacular irritation. However, up to 30% of these injuries in up to 50% of elite climbers will involve the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) region. These injuries are more serious and consist of varying degrees of flexor digitorum sublimis insertional strains, digital fibro-osseous

The elbow is a complex joint from the anatomic and biomechanical point of view. A thorough understanding of elbow anatomy greatly aids the surgeon in dealing with elbow trauma. The close vicinity of neurovascular structures should always be kept in mind when selecting a surgical approach. Any approach to the elbow needs to be safe and versatile. Knowledge of the attachment and orientation of elbow ligaments reduces the risk of inadvertent intraoperative injury and/or postoperative instability. Surgeons dealing with elbow trauma should have a good working understanding of elbow anatomy and the
