Abnormalities of the ureteral bud.

The development and incorporation of the ureteric bud into the developing bladder is a complex process, and it is influenced by events occurring at the same time in the development of other systems in the perineum. Knowledge of the embryology of the ureteric bud and associated wolffian duct is the key to understanding the development of the entire genitourinary system. If the normal embryology is understood, the dysembryogenesis that results in many of the common anomalies of the lower urinary system is simplified. Many of the concepts proposed in this discussion are well substantiated, others…

Hypoplastic occipital condyle and third occipital condyle: review of their dysembryology.

Disruption or embryologic derailment of the normal bony architecture of the craniovertebral junction (CVJ) may result in symptoms. As studies of the embryology and pathology of hypoplasia of the occipital condyles and third occipital condyles are lacking in the literature, the present review was performed. Standard search engines were accessed and queried for publications regarding hypoplastic occipital condyles and third occipital condyles. The literature supports the notion that occipital condyle hypoplasia and a third occipital condyle are due to malformation or persistence of the proatlas,…

[Cyst of Nucks canal associated with recurrent inguinal hernia].

Cysts of a permeable vaginal process or cysts of Nuck are a rare entity in women and have a similar embryologic and etiologic origin as that of inguinal hernias. They should be considered a differential diagnosis when an inguinal mass is present or during a diagnostic laparoscopy in which a peritoneal defect or open inguinal ring is found. We report the case of a woman with a cyst of Nuck that presented as a recurrent inguinal hernia. Discussion is centered on the embryologic, anatomic, clinical and therapeutic aspects of this condition.

A newborn with a covered anus complicated by two concomitant unique fistulas.

A newborn having a covered anus and two fistulas, one ano-urethral and one penile urethro-cutaneous, is presented. In spite of the resemblance of this ano-urethral fistula to an "H-type" ano-urethral fistula, which is thought to result from the failure of the division of the cloaca in the embryological period, three abnormalities seen in this case were thought to be the result of a serial event which occurred in the more distal part, the anal and the genital folds, during the embryological period.

Abnormalities of the gallbladder, clinical effects.

The aim of this review of the literature was to present and discuss the anatomical and embryological basis of congenital abnormalities of the gallbladder, based on a case of volvulus. In the rare cases of ectopic gallbladder, diagnosis of a biliary disease could be difficult. In such cases surgery can also be dangerous, especially when it is associated with abnormalities of the intra-hepatic biliary and vascular tree. This study, based on the embryology of the extra hepatic bile duct, focused on the most frequent gallbladder abnormalities to keep them in mind.

Development of the human pancreas: variations and pathology. A tentative classification.

The pathology of the pancreas is sometimes related to the embryological development of the organ. The first part of this paper is a presentation of the embryology, morphogenesis and cytogenesis of the pancreas. A tentative classification is then proposed to group together the lesions directly related to anomalies of the position and differentiation of the pancreatic buds. Pathological processes affecting the pancreas can be divided into those related to the ducts and those related to the parenchyma of the gland. In each case anomalies arising at a given stage of development lead to different d…

Congenital pancreatic anomalies, variants, and conditions.

Understanding pancreatic development and the congenital anomalies and variants that result from alterations in normal development allows for better recognition of these anomalies at diagnostic imaging. This article reviews normal pancreatic embryology and anatomy, and the appearance of the more common developmental anomalies and ductal variants, with emphasis on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Common mimics of masses are also covered.

A rare left-sided abdominal wall defect.

A 4-hour-old boy is presented here, who was born with a large abdominal wall defect situated in the left flank. Silo closure was necessary due to the large size of the defect. A Medline search up to December 2002 revealed only 2 other left-sided abdominal wall defects distant from the umbilicus. The possible embryology of this anomaly is discussed.

Duplication of the pituitary gland as shown by MR.

Duplication of the pituitary gland is a rare malformation. The authors describe a patient with features of the median cleft face syndrome (hypertelorism, V-shaped hairline, and developmental delay) who exhibited duplication of the pituitary gland and diffuse thickening of the hypothalamus (hypothalamic hamartoma) as shown by MR. The embryology of the developing pituitary gland and pathogenesis of pituitary duplication are discussed.

True median cleft of the upper lip associated with three pedunculated club-shaped skin masses.

A rare case of true median cleft of the upper lip associated with three skin masses is reported. While 114 cases of median cleft of the upper lip have been reported, in our literature review we found only 1 case, reported by Sharma, in which the median cleft was associated with skin masses. The embryology of this case is also discussed.

Ectopic adrenocortical tissue along the spermatic cord.

The subject of ectopic adrenal tissue along the spermatic cord is reviewed in respect of incidental finding during operation for undescended testis. The condition is probably more common than previously reported and embryology and clinical implications are briefly discussed. Nodules consisting of aberrant adrenal tissue should be removed whenever incidentally detected, but a routine search for them is not mandatory.

Agenesis of the corpus callosum revealed by computerized tomography.

Computerized tomography is a new, safe, non-invasive method of diagnosing intracranial disorders. It has been used in the detection of intracranial tumors, hydrocephalus, hemorrhages, atrophy, abscesses and subdural hematomata. Two cases of agenesis of the corpus callosum are presented, in which the diagnosis was made or confirmed by computerized tomography. The embryology, clinical course and radiological aspects of the disorder are reviewed.
