A five year old girl presented with short femora, cupped distal metaphyses and flexion deformity of the knees suggesting previous epiphyseo-metaphyseal damage. The aetiology was suggested by finding a history of previous infantile scurvy with separated distal femoral epiphyses. The rarity of this complication and possible contributing factors are discussed.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the clinical effects of bone fusion distal to the phalangeal epiphyseal plate in treating asymmetrical type III thumb polydactyly, focusing on growth and scar healing.
METHODS: In patients with asymmetrical type III thumb syndactyly, the proximal phalanx of the accessory finger, distal epiphyseal plate, and some soft tissue were excised to create a pedicled tissue flap. This flap, containing part of the nail and bone distal to the epiphyseal plate, was subsequently attached to the distal segment of the main finger. The therapeutic effect was evaluat

BACKGROUND: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is one of the most common hip disorders. The vascularity of the lateral epiphyseal vessels supplying the femoral head in patients with healed SCFE has not been well defined. The purpose of this study was to characterize the location and number of lateral epiphyseal vessels in young adults with healed SCFE.
METHODS: This was a retrospective study of 17 patients (18 hips) with a diagnosis of SCFE and a matched control group of 17 patients (17 hips) with developmental dysplasia of the hip. All patients underwent high-resolution contrast-enhanc

INTRODUCTION: We report a case of Type 1 Monteggia equivalent injury with intact radio-capitellar congruity, associated with epiphyseal fracture of distal radius and distal ulna shaft in an 11-year-old boy. There are only a few cases of Monteggia or Monteggia equivalent injury with ipsilateral forearm fractures in children, and injury pattern being reported by us is not only rare but also the only case reported thus far to the best of our knowledge, Sood et al. described Type 1 equivalent with epiphyseal injuries of both radius and ulna Osada et al. also described injury pattern same as Sood e

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the MR imaging features that enable differentiation between early irreversible osteonecrosis and transient lesions in nontraumatic lesions of the femoral condyle having the "bone marrow edema" pattern on MR imaging.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed 23 nontraumatic painful lesions of the femoral condyle in 23 patients (12 men and 11 women; mean age, 62 years). All patients had undergone radiography of the knee with findings that were normal or inconclusive. Also, all patients underwent MR imaging that revealed the bone marrow edema patter

Cartilage-hair hypoplasia is a rare, autosomal recessive skeletal dysplasia, caused by mutations in the RMRP gene. The skeletal abnormalities include irregular metaphyses and cone shaped epiphyses of the hands. Molecular diagnosis confirmed two novel RMRP mutations in a compound heterozygous state in two siblings with this condition.

We describe a patient with chondrodysplasia punctata. He had stippled epiphyses and coronal clefting of the vertebral bodies. No peroxisomal abnormalities were detected. His facial appearance and X-rays were suggestive of the Sheffield type of chondrodysplasia punctata. This type of chondrodysplasia punctata appears to be a heterogeneous group.

This is a case report of an infant born with nasal hypoplasia, stippling of epiphyses, and toe deformities. This embryopathy is due to maternal ingestion of Warfarin during pregnancy. Other defects including ophthalmologic and neurologic abnormalities also occur, but the nasal malformation is the only constant clinical feature.

An 11-year-old boy with short stature, dysplastic epiphyses, and vertebral abnormalities was thought to have spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia. He was subsequently found to have epiphyseal dysplasia secondary to congenital hypothyroidism. The radiographic findings in longstanding congenital hypothyroidism and spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia are compared and a possible mechanism for the dysplasia of hypothyroidism is discussed.

Pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) type 1b is a rare childhood disorder characterized by renal resistance to parathyroid hormone (PTH) resulting in biochemical hypoparathyroidism but with skeletal sensitivity to PTH. We describe a patient with PHP type 1b who we believe is one of the youngest reported patients with bilateral slipped capital femoral epiphyses (SCFE).

Abnormalities of the epiphyseal growth plate that occur in collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) were studied. CIA was induced in 6-week-old Lewis rats by immunization with type II collagen. Radiographic examination revealed the early closure of the epiphyseal growth plate with growth retardation of the femur and tibia. Histological evaluation confirmed the early closure of the epiphyseal growth plate accompanied by decreased intensity of safranin-O staining indicating decreased amounts of proteoglycans in the extracellular matrix (ECM) of the cartilage. Immunohistochemical methods showed that the

The radiological diagnosis of rickets is mainly based on the widened appearance of actively developing epiphyseal growth plates. In the adolescent with rickets the secondary iliac and ischial ossification centres may be abnormally wide when most other epiphyses have fused. The appearance of the iliac crest is of use both in helping to make the diagnosis and in monitoring the results of treatment.

Two experiments in the rabbit model have been carried out to see if a vascular pedicle placed in a growing epiphysis would establish new capillaries. In one, the vascular pedicle of peroneus longus muscle was placed in the proximal fibula epiphysis. In the other, the proximal fibula was excised and the epiphysis placed across the saphenous artery and vein in the groin. After 3 months, histological examination of the epiphyses in both experiments showed that no new vessels had grown from the vascular pedicle. Cartilage is known to inhibit vascularisation, and these results suggest that attempts…

BACKGROUND: The epiphyseal tubercle, the corresponding metaphyseal fossa, and peripheral cupping are key stabilizers of the femoral head-neck junction. Abnormal development of these features in the setting of supraphysiologic physeal stress under high forces (for example, forces that occur during sports activity) may result in a cam morphology. Although most previous studies on cam-type femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) have mainly focused on overgrowth of the peripheral cupping, little is known about detailed morphologic changes of the epiphyseal and metaphyseal bony surfaces in patients wit

Two cases of multiple fractures, one in a newborn with an unclassified bone dysplasia, another in an infant with recurrent fits of unknown etiology are reported. The second case is the youngest in the literature with bilateral slipped capital femoral epiphyses and bilateral femoral neck fractures, secondary to stress injury.

PURPOSE: The study aimed to compare the clinical and radiologic results of in situ pinning and modified Dunn procedure methods in stable-moderate slipped capital femoral epiphyses surgery.
METHODS: Slipped capital femoral epiphyses cases between January 2000 and December 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. Stable and moderate cases treated with in situ pinning or modified Dunn procedure and those with a follow-up period longer than 1 year were included. Two groups were formed: the in situ pinning group and the modified Dunn procedure group. Radiologically, postoperative alpha angle, Southwick…

Report of a patella cubiti in a patient with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. The genesis of this patella is unknown up to now. The following hypotheses are discussed: 1. Persistent separation of the non fused epiphyseal bone centre with consecutive independent development. 2. Avulsion of the epiphysis due to muscle tension. 3. Epiphysitis as cause of the new formed patella.

Antenatal sonographic diagnosis of rhizomelic chondrodysplasia punctata depends on recognization of the combination of rhizomelic bone shortening and epiphyseal stippling. This is the only report of prenatal ultrasonographic diagnosis of bilateral cataracts in a fetus with rhizomelic chondrodysplasia punctata (type 1). Also, this is the first report of severe rhizomelic limb shortening, and bilateral cataracts prior to the recognization of epiphyseal stippling.

Thirty-six patients with arthrogryposis have been followed at The James Lawrence Kernan Hospital of Baltimore since 1951. In this group, nine patients sustained 16 perinatal fractures. Femoral shaft fractures and epiphyseal separations were found more commonly in patients with fixed knee extension or dislocated hips and were related to relative stiffness and obstructed delivery. Femoral fractures were more common than humeral or tibial fractures. Arthrogrypotic infants displaying irritability and poor feeding are suspect of skeletal trauma. Thickening of limbs or joints may be the only clinica
