Preoperative fractional exhaled nitric oxide is a risk and predictive factor of postoperative cough for early-stage non-small cell lung cancer patients: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: To determine whether preoperative fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FENO) level is a risk and predictive factor of postoperative cough by using the Leicester Cough Questionnaire in Mandarin-Chinese (LCQ-MC). METHODS: 292 early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients without preoperative cough were enrolled. 138 patients (47.2%) developed postoperative cough, univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed to identify the independent risk factors of postoperative cough. For an exploratory analysis, patients with cough were divided into low and high-

Optimization of volatile organic compounds sampling from dairy cow exhaled breath using polymer-based solid-phase extraction cartridges for gas chromatographic analysis.

We explored appropriate technical setups for the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from exhaled cow breath by comparing six different polymer-based solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridges currently on the market for gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS) screening. Exhaled breath was sampled at a single timepoint from five lactating dairy cows using six different SPE cartridges (Bond Elut ENV (ENV); Chromabond HRX (HRX); Chromabond HRP (HRP); Chromabond HLB (HLB); Chromabond HR-XCW (XCW) and Chromabond HR-XAW (XAW)). The trapped VOCs were analyzed by dynamic headspace vacuum

Reducing asthma attacks in children using exhaled nitric oxide (RAACENO) as a biomarker to inform treatment strategy: a multicentre, parallel, randomised, controlled, phase 3 trial.

BACKGROUND: The benefit of fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) in guiding asthma treatment is uncertain. We evaluated the efficacy of adding FeNO to symptom-guided treatment in children with asthma versus only symptom-guided treatment. METHODS: RAACENO was a multicentre, parallel, randomised, controlled, phase 3 trial done in 35 secondary care centres and 17 primary care recruitment sites (only seven primary care sites managed to recruit patients) in the UK. Patients with a confirmed asthma diagnosis, aged 6-15 years, prescribed inhaled corticosteroids, and who received a course of oral co

A novel approach to partition central and peripheral airway nitric oxide.

BACKGROUND: Determining the site of airways inflammation may lead to the targeting of therapy. Nitric oxide (NO) is a biomarker of airway inflammation and can be measured at multiple exhalation flow rates to allow partitioning into bronchial (large/central airway maximal nitric oxide flux [J'awno]) and peripheral (peripheral/small airway/alveolar nitric oxide concentration [Cano]) airway contributions by linear regression. This requires a minimum of three exhalations. We developed a simple and practical method to partition NO. METHODS: In 29 healthy subjects (FEV1, 97% ± 3% predicted), 13 pat…

Investigating short-term lung inflammation using exhaled breath VOCs from exposure to candles: a randomized controlled crossover study among young mild asthmatics.

Lung inflammation is associated with a response to pollution or irritants and is reported to release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in breath, that can be monitored non-invasively. An approach to studying short-term lung inflammation is exposure to environmental emissions. This study used brief exposure to PM₂.₅ emissions from two types of burning candles to evaluate potential differences in airway inflammation among mildly asthmatic individuals. The aim was to explore VOCs linked to lung inflammation by exposure to candle emissions; emissions from candle A, a newly developed candle with a

Short-term efficacy of nebulized budesonide for allergic airway inflammation in young children and dynamic changes in fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO): a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Allergic airway inflammation in young children with recurrent wheezing may precede asthma. Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) may reflect type 2 airway inflammation. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the short-term effectiveness and safety of nebulized budesonide and dynamic FeNO changes in children aged 6 to 36 months. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 548 children treated between January 2023 and February 2025, with follow-up through June 2025. Children receiving standard care plus nebulized budesonide (n = 286) were compared to those on standard care alone (n = 262). Outcomes incl

Clinically Diagnose Asthma and Monitor Its Severity Using an Ultrasensitive Chemiresistive Nitric Oxide (NO) Gas Sensor via Exhaled Breath Analysis Assisted by Pattern Recognition.

Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) is widely recognized as a reliable biomarker for asthma. FeNO sensors can help diagnose asthma and monitor its severity. In this study, an ultrasensitive chemiresistive gas sensor, sensitive to the key breath biomarkers of asthma─nitric oxide (NO) and H2S─was fabricated using Ag-decorated ZnO. The sensor exhibits detection limits of 5 ppb for NO and 50 ppb for H2S, and it can discriminate 10 ppb NO and 60 ppb H2S from the exhaled breaths. Clinically, a total of 80 exhaled breath samples were collected and tested, including 40 from asthma patients (APs) an

Self-reported smoking status and exhaled carbon monoxide in secondary preventive follow-up after coronary heart events: Do our patients tell the truth?

INTRODUCTION: Smoking cessation reduces the risk of myocardial infarctions (MI) and death in patients with coronary heart disease. Smoking status is frequently assessed based on self-report. The aims of this study were to compare self-reported and objectively measured (exhaled carbon monoxide [eCO]) smoking status after MI, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), and to assess whether assumed wrongly declared smoking cessation was associated to poorer achievement of other treatment targets for secondary prevention. METHODS: This study was a sub-an

P-N Heterojunction formation: Metal Sulfide@Metal Oxide Chemiresistor for ppb H2S Detection from Exhaled Breath and Food Spoilage at Flexible Room Temperature.

The development of a portable, low-cost sensor capable of accurately detecting H2S gas in exhaled human breath at room temperature is highly anticipated in the fields of human health assessment and food spoilage evaluation. However, achieving outstanding gas sensing performance and applicability for flexible room-temperature operation with parts per billion H2S gas sensors still poses technical challenges. To address this issue, this study involves the in situ growth of MoS2 nanosheets on the surface of In2O3 fibers to construct a p-n heterojunction. The In2O3@MoS2-2 sensor exhibits a high res

Predictive value of blood eosinophils and exhaled nitric oxide in adults with mild asthma: a prespecified subgroup analysis of an open-label, parallel-group, randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Whether blood eosinophil counts and exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) are associated with important outcomes in mild asthma is unclear. In this prespecified subgroup analysis of a previously published open-label clinical trial, we aimed to assess associations between blood eosinophil counts and FeNO with outcomes and response to asthma treatment. METHODS: In the previously reported 52-week, open-label, randomised controlled trial, people with mild asthma receiving only β agonist reliever inhalers were enrolled at one of 16 clinical trials units in New Zealand, the UK, Italy, or Australi

Testing for Drugs in Exhaled Breath Collected With ExaBreath in a Drug Dependence Population: Comparison With Data Obtained in Urine After Liquid Chromatographic-Tandem Mass Spectrometric Analyses.

BACKGROUND: Exhaled breath is commonly used in alcohol testing but has been recently demonstrated by scientists from Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States to contain a large number of both volatile and nonvolatile substances that can be measured using dedicated devices. ExaBreath is a sampling device that collects the bio-aerosols particles from the donor. Approximately 1-2 minutes exhaled breath is enough for the test. The device collects the very small bio-aerosols on a filter, which is consecutively incubated into methanol to release the drugs at the laboratory. METHODS: Eighteen drug

Transmission of droplet-conveyed infectious agents such as SARS-CoV-2 by speech and vocal exercises during speech therapy: preliminary experiment concerning airflow velocity.

PURPOSE: Infectious agents, such as SARS-CoV-2, can be carried by droplets expelled during breathing. The spatial dissemination of droplets varies according to their initial velocity. After a short literature review, our goal was to determine the velocity of the exhaled air during vocal exercises. METHODS: A propylene glycol cloud produced by 2 e-cigarettes' users allowed visualization of the exhaled air emitted during vocal exercises. Airflow velocities were measured during the first 200 ms of a long exhalation, a sustained vowel /a/ and varied vocal exercises. For the long exhalation and th…

Elevated carbon dioxide in exhaled breath induces false-positive DOB results during Helicobacter pylori detection with ¹³C-urea breath test using infrared spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: The urea breath test (UBT) detects Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) by measuring 13CO₂ in exhaled air after the ingestion of a 13C-urea metabolized by bacterial urease. However, the influence of CO₂ concentrations in exhaled breath on UBT results remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of varying exhaled CO₂ levels on the outcomes of infrared spectroscopy-based ¹³C-UBT. METHODS: Six volunteers confirmed to be H. pylori-negative via ¹³C-UBT and stool antigen assay were enrolled. All participants completed overnight fasting and oral rinsing before specimen collection
