[Iatrogenic injury of peripheral nerves].

There are many risks of iatrogenic peripheral-nerve injuries during routine medical procedures. These injuries may occur during venipuncture for drawing blood, endoscopic treatments, punctures of joints or ganglions, various kinds of surgical procedures, and in numerous other situations. It is important to create a "Manual" of such accidents or incidents. In case an accident occurs, both the medical staff and the injured patient should receive adequate support to avoid any anxiety. The doctor must examine the person's injury carefully, and must judge its severity as soon as possible. The docto

Nutrition for winter sports.

Winter sports are played in cold conditions on ice or snow and often at moderate to high altitude. The most important nutritional challenges for winter sport athletes exposed to environmental extremes include increased energy expenditure, accelerated muscle and liver glycogen utilization, exacerbated fluid loss, and increased iron turnover. Winter sports, however, vary greatly regarding their nutritional requirements due to variable physiological and physique characteristics, energy and substrate demands, and environmental training and competition conditions. What most winter sport athletes ha

Hirayama disease in children from North America.

Hirayama disease has been mainly reported from Asia; only a few cases are from the Western hemisphere, particularly North America. This is a retrospective chart review of patients < 18 years, diagnosed with Hirayama disease from a single center over 10 years. We diagnosed 6 children (4 boys), 15.1 ± 1.2 years of age. Symptom onset was 3 months to 3 years before presentation. All had unilateral or bilateral asymmetric distal upper extremity weakness without objective sensory loss. Oblique amyotrophy and cold paresis were noted in 5. On electromyography, acute-on-chronic denervation was most fre

Single-molecule spectroscopy of the temperature-induced collapse of unfolded proteins.

We used single-molecule FRET in combination with other biophysical methods and molecular simulations to investigate the effect of temperature on the dimensions of unfolded proteins. With single-molecule FRET, this question can be addressed even under near-native conditions, where most molecules are folded, allowing us to probe a wide range of denaturant concentrations and temperatures. We find a compaction of the unfolded state of a small cold shock protein with increasing temperature in both the presence and the absence of denaturant, with good agreement between the results from single-molecu

A rare vascular tumour with distinctive clinical findings.

Subungual glomus tumours are rare benign hamartomas arising from the arterial end of the glomus body (an arteriovenous shunt related to thermoregulation). A combination of clinical examination, Color-Doppler ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used to support the diagnosis confirmed by histology. A 45 year old male patient with a three-year-old swelling of the proximal thumbnail presented himself at the Surgery Department. A slightly bluish nail plate and tenderness under the thumbnail were evident at clinical examination. He suffered the classic trilogy of sensitivity to p

Benefit and risk management for steroid treatment in upper airway diseases.

Because of their efficacy, intranasal corticosteroids (INCS) remain the cornerstone in the treatment of upper airway diseases. Although INCS are extremely efficacious, local and systemic adverse effects have been associated with their use. However, none of these effects is of sufficient frequency or magnitude to warrant a reduction in their use or any action more than careful drug and dose selection and monitoring when indicated. Recent publications focus on newer aspects of efficacy in rhinitis and on the adverse effects of growth suppression, cataract formation, and histologic effects on the

Current management of Raynaud's syndrome.

Raynaud's syndrome affects 20% to 25% of the population in cool, damp climates. Although its etiology and pathophysiology are poorly understood, treatment options do exist. For mild cases, the wearing of gloves, cold avoidance, tobacco cessation, and assurance that this is a nuisance condition that will not lead to finger amputation are often all that is required. Patients who fail this protocol are treated with extended-release nifedipine, 30 mg, at bedtime. In our experience, 70% to 80% respond with a decrease in severity and frequency of attacks, but 20% to 50% develop intolerable side effe

Severe frostbite of the upper extremities--a psychosocial problem mostly associated with alcohol abuse.

In the catchment area of Helsinki University Central Hospital (in total 16 surgical hospitals) amputation was performed on 9 patients with frostbite in the upper extremities during 1984-1985. The population during the study period in this area was 1.165,000 inhabitants, corresponding to 24% of the whole population in Finland. All 9 patients were male and the mean age was 49 years (range 31-75). All amputations performed were of the fingers, the third, fourth and fifth fingers most frequently affected. Alcohol was a marked etiologic or contributing factor in most of the frostbites. Two patients

Vibration disease.

Today, in this age of technology, vibration caused by machinery is an almost universal hazard. Vibration transferred from a machine to the human body may cause discomfort, a reduction of performance, and even injury. Vibratory manual tools may cause damage to the circulatory system of the upper extremities (Raynaud's syndrome), to the peripheral nerves (peripheral neuropathy), and to the bones and joints (aseptic necrosis, fatigue fractures, degenerative joint disease). Vehicles and machines causing floor vibration cause degenerative disc disease of the lumbar spine. The pathogenesis of vibrat

The effect of acupuncture duration on analgesia and peripheral sensory thresholds.

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture provides a means of peripheral stimulation for pain relief. However, the detailed neuronal mechanisms by which acupuncture relieves pain are still poorly understood and information regarding optimal treatment settings is still inadequate. Previous studies with a short burst of unilateral electroacupuncture (EA) in the Tendinomuscular Meridians (TMM) treatment model for pain demonstrated a transient dermatomally correlated bilateral analgesic effect with corresponding peripheral modality-specific sensory threshold alterations. However, the impact of EA duration on the an

Enhanced drug-disease association prediction through representation learning on similarity networks.

Drug repositioning has emerged as a promising strategy for accelerating therapeutic discovery by identifying novel indications for existing drugs. Recent graph representation learning methods have shown encouraging performance for drug-disease association prediction; however, many existing approaches directly utilize heterogeneous drug-disease networks during representation learning, potentially introducing label leakage and limiting generalizability. In this study, we propose similarity network-based representation learning for drug repositioning (SimNetRLDR), a similarity network-based repre

Climate change and cerebrovascular diseases: A narrative review with Brazilian regional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is reshaping environmental exposures, which in turn influence cerebrovascular diseases. Brazil's continental dimensions and climate diversity offer a unique opportunity to examine climate-stroke associations within a unified healthcare system. Such regional analyses may inform adaptation strategies for other low-and middle-income countries facing similar environmental challenges. METHODS: A literature search was conducted across the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases, covering publications from January 2000 through August 2025 linking climate exposures to

Effect of Polyphosphoric Acid on the Coupled Aging Behavior of SBR-Modified Asphalt Under Intense UV Radiation and Large Temperature Differences.

Asphalt pavements in high-altitude cold regions are subjected to the coupled effects of intense ultraviolet (UV) radiation and large temperature differences, which accelerate the oxidative aging and cracking of styrene-butadiene rubber-modified asphalt (SBR-MA), severely compromising their service durability. To improve aging resistance, polyphosphoric acid (PPA) was incorporated into SBR-MA to produce a PPA/SBR-modified binder (PPA/SBR-MA). This study systematically investigated the multiscale evolution of rheological properties, chemical structure, molecular weight distribution, nanoscale mo
