Estimating Ground Reaction Forces from Gait Kinematics in Cerebral Palsy: A Convolutional Neural Network Approach.

PURPOSE: While gait analysis is essential for assessing neuromotor disorders like cerebral palsy (CP), capturing accurate ground reaction force (GRF) measurements during natural walking presents challenges, particularly due to variations in gait patterns. Previous studies have explored GRF prediction using machine learning, but specific focus on patients with CP is lacking. This research aims to address this gap by predicting GRF using joint angles derived from marker data during gait in patients with CP, thereby suggesting a protocol for gait analysis without the need for force plates. Multi-omic analysis revealed the immunological patterns and diagnostic value of exhausted T cell-derived PTTG1 in patients with psoriasis.

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis, characterized by chronic inflammation, is a persistent skin condition that is notoriously challenging to manage and prone to relapse. Despite significant advancements in its treatment, many adverse reactions still occur. Therefore, exploring the mechanisms behind the occurrence and development of psoriasis is extremely important. METHODS: The weighted correlation network analysis (WGCNA) algorithm was used to identify phenotype-related genes in patients with psoriasis. We recruited clinical samples of patients with psoriasis, and used single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-s

Using machine learning to predict the bleeding risk for patients with cardiac valve replacement treated with warfarin in hospitalized.

BACKGROUND: Distinguishing warfarin-related bleeding risk at the bedside remains challenging. Studies indicate that warfarin therapy should be suspended when international normalized ratio (INR) ≥ 4.5, or it may sharply increase the risk of bleeding. We aim to develop and validate a model to predict the high bleeding risk in valve replacement patients during hospitalization. METHOD: Cardiac valve replacement patients from January 2016 to December 2021 across Nanjing First Hospital were collected. Five different machine-learning (ML) models were used to establish the prediction model. High ble

Development of a Human Immunodeficiency Virus Risk Prediction Model Using Electronic Health Record Data From an Academic Health System in the Southern United States.

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is underutilized in the southern United States. Rapid identification of individuals vulnerable to diagnosis of HIV using electronic health record (EHR)-based tools may augment PrEP uptake in the region. METHODS: Using machine learning, we developed EHR-based models to predict incident HIV diagnosis as a surrogate for PrEP candidacy. We included patients from a southern medical system with encounters between October 2014 and August 2016, training the model to predict incident HIV diagnosis between September 2016 and

Adaptation and External Validation of Pathogenic Urine Culture Prediction in Primary Care Using Machine Learning.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infection (UTI) symptoms are common in primary care, but antibiotics are appropriate only when an infection is present. Urine culture is the reference standard test for infection, but results take >1 day. A machine learning predictor of urine cultures showed high accuracy for an emergency department (ED) population but required urine microscopy features that are not routinely available in primary care (the NeedMicro classifier). METHODS: We redesigned a classifier (NoMicro) that does not depend on urine microscopy and retrospectively validated it internally (ED data

Development and Validation of a Machine Learning-Based Dementia Screening Tool: The Six-Question Dementia Screening Test.

Timely detection of dementia is crucial for reducing its health and societal burden. Standard tools such as the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Cognitive Abilities Screening Instrument (CASI), although widely used, are limited by time and resource demands. This study developed and validated a machine learning-based screening tool using the Six-Question Dementia Screening Test (6Q-DS), a brief interview of six items. Data from 533 older adults at a neurology clinic in Taiwan (331 with dementia, 202 without) were analyzed with eXtreme Gradient Boosting. The 6Q-DS achieved an AUC of 0.93

Exploring interactions between socioeconomic context and natural hazards on human population displacement.

Climate change is leading to more extreme weather hazards, forcing human populations to be displaced. We employ explainable machine learning techniques to model and understand internal displacement flows and patterns from observational data alone. For this purpose, a large, harmonized, global database of disaster-induced movements in the presence of floods, storms, and landslides during 2016-2021 is presented. We account for environmental, societal, and economic factors to predict the number of displaced persons per event in the affected regions. Here we show that displacements can be primaril

Prediction of hearing preservation after acoustic neuroma surgery based on SMOTE-XGBoost.

Prior to the surgical removal of an acoustic neuroma, the majority of patients anticipate that their hearing will be preserved to the greatest possible extent following surgery. This paper proposes a postoperative hearing preservation prediction model for the characteristics of class-imbalanced hospital real data based on the extreme gradient boost tree (XGBoost). In order to eliminate sample imbalance, the synthetic minority oversampling technique (SMOTE) is applied to increase the number of underclass samples in the data. Multiple machine learning models are also used for the accurate predic

Connectome-based machine learning models are vulnerable to subtle data manipulations.

Neuroimaging-based predictive models continue to improve in performance, yet a widely overlooked aspect of these models is "trustworthiness," or robustness to data manipulations. High trustworthiness is imperative for researchers to have confidence in their findings and interpretations. In this work, we used functional connectomes to explore how minor data manipulations influence machine learning predictions. These manipulations included a method to falsely enhance prediction performance and adversarial noise attacks designed to degrade performance. Although these data manipulations drasticall

Proteomic and clinical biomarkers for acute mountain sickness in a longitudinal cohort.

Ascending to high-altitude by non-high-altitude natives is a well-suited model for studying acclimatization to extreme environments. Acute mountain sickness (AMS) is frequently experienced by visitors. The diagnosis of AMS mainly depends on a self-questionnaire, revealing the need for reliable biomarkers for AMS. Here, we profiled 22 AMS symptom phenotypes, 65 clinical indexes, and plasma proteomic profiles of AMS via a combination of proximity extension assay and multiple reaction monitoring of a longitudinal cohort of 53 individuals. We quantified 1069 proteins and validated 102 proteins. Vi

Persistent metagenomic signatures of early-life hospitalization and antibiotic treatment in the infant gut microbiota and resistome.

Hospitalized preterm infants receive frequent and often prolonged exposures to antibiotics because they are vulnerable to infection. It is not known whether the short-term effects of antibiotics on the preterm infant gut microbiota and resistome persist after discharge from neonatal intensive care units. Here, we use complementary metagenomic, culture-based and machine learning techniques to study the gut microbiota and resistome of antibiotic-exposed preterm infants during and after hospitalization, and we compare these readouts to antibiotic-naive healthy infants sampled synchronously. We fi
