BACKGROUND: Treatment of facial fractures in the setting of open-globe injuries poses a management dilemma because of the often disparate treatment priorities of multidisciplinary trauma teams and the lack of prognostic data regarding visual outcomes.
METHODS: Patients in the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Registry sustaining facial fractures with concomitant open-globe injuries from January of 1998 to August of 2010 were identified. Odds ratios were calculated to identify demographic and clinical variables associated with blindness, and multivariate regression analysis was performed.

PURPOSE: The authors report a case of fungal scleral keratitis and endophthalmitis as a complication of pterygium surgery.
METHODS: Case presentation.
RESULTS: A 46-year old woman underwent pterygium excision with topical use of intraoperative mitomycin C. By day 21 after excision, scleral melting was followed by fungal keratitis. Endophthalmitis ensued, which rapidly progressed, despite surgical and medical interventions. The eye was finally enucleated to prevent fungaemia. Pathology revealed a highly disorganized eye with disruption of scleral collagen in the area of scleral melting.

We performed a prospective study of all perforating eye injuries in a western part of Sweden during 1989-1991. We registered 140 cases (141 eyes) in a population of 1.4 million. Annual incidence was 3.3 per 100,000 inhabitants. Follow-up time was 6 months or more in 91 (64%) of the cases. Perforating eye injuries were 5.6 times more common in men than in women. Four female patients with known unplanned filtering blebs following cataract surgery developed endophthalmitis, two weeks to 30 months after being fit with corneal contact lenses. The cytotoxic effects of mitomycin C (MMC) on intact rabbit eyes were studied using light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy.
