Paediatric dentistry avulsion: case reports.

Children may present at a dental surgery for management of oro-facial injuries. Most general dental practitioners are able to handle straightforward cases but referral may be required for complex injuries. Successful healing following tooth avulsion depends on the amount of damage to teeth and supporting structures, emergency treatment, and follow-up treatment. All of these play a role in the long-term prognosis of avulsed teeth.

A new coronal scalp technique to treat craniofacial fracture: the supratemporalis approach.

OBJECTIVE: A new coronal scalp approach, denoted as the supratemporalis approach, was designed to address facial nerve injury induced by the traditional coronal scalp approach. STUDY DESIGN: First, the complication rate among 38 cases operated upon with the traditional coronal scalp approach was analyzed retrospectively. Then 40 cases were operated upon using the supratemporalis approach. The rate of complications was recorded. The follow-up periods were 3-17 months. RESULTS: The facial contours and functions recovered well after the operation in all 78 cases. Seven cases of facial nerve inj

The prevalence of cervical spine injury, head injury, or both with isolated and multiple craniomaxillofacial fractures.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have reported the relationship among craniomaxillofacial fractures, cervical spine injuries, and head injuries with varying results. Life-threatening injuries to the head and cervical spine with devastating consequences cannot be missed by reconstructive surgeons during evaluation of facial trauma. The purpose of this study was to establish the prevalence of cervical spine injuries and/or head injuries with isolated and multiple craniomaxillofacial fractures at trauma centers across the United States. METHODS: The study was a retrospective chart review of Internati

Treatment of complex facial fractures: clinical experience of different timing and order.

Given the variability of the timing and order of surgeries, it is difficult to choose the best treatment for patients with complex facial fractures. Based on the clinical experiences, the authors have reviewed their experience with the timing and order of operations depending on the sites of complex facial fractures and their concurrent injuries. The current study was based on a total of 105 patients with complex facial fractures from the year 2002 to 2011. After assessing the patients' clinical records, radiological data, and clinical photographs, the following data were analyzed: patients' a

[Forehead injuries].

Forehead traumatic injuries are frequently associated with head trauma. The primary concern in such cases is the neurological aspect, but these injuries also have significant functional (such as sinus ventilation and frontal movement) and aesthetic implications. Fractures of the frontal cranial vault differ based on the presence of associated rhinoliquorrhea, sinus involvement, or extension to the skull base or facial mass. Some cases could even require a multidisciplinary approach. Some fractures may lead to long-term complications, necessitating prolonged follow-up. Given the potential seque

Retained crossbow bolt after penetrating facial trauma.

We present an unusual case of a retained crossbow bolt in the maxillofacial area of a 31-year-old man. While crossbow injuries are rare, this case is of interest because otolaryngologists are often faced with treating retained foreign objects after penetrating facial trauma. These cases are difficult to manage because of the complexity and variety of injuries that can occur during both the initial trauma and the removal. We focus on the management of the bolt's removal and provide a brief discussion of the relevant literature on crossbow injuries to the head and neck.

Child abuse and neglect: dentistry's role.

While the actual incidence of child abuse has not been determined, the available statistics are grim. The dentist must view himself as a child advocate. Simply treating dental and facial injuries of abused children while ignoring the social needs of the child and family is unacceptable. State laws mandate reporting as well as protect the dentist from civil or criminal liability. Dentistry's contribution in the management of nonaccidental injuries is the recognition of the possibility of physical abuse, the treatment of orofacial injuries and reporting to the appropriate authorities.

Facial Nerve Hematoma After Penetrating Middle Ear Trauma: A Cause of Delayed Facial Palsy.

Penetrating middle ear injury may cause hearing loss, vertigo, or facial nerve injury, although facial nerve paralysis followed by head trauma is a rare condition. In this study, we report a case of a 3-year-old patient with delayed facial palsy on the left side that developed 4 days after an accidental tympanic membrane perforation caused by a cotton-tipped swab. Otoendoscopic examination revealed a perforation in the posterosuperior quadrant of the tympanic membrane. Audiometry revealed no hearing loss on the injured side, and eye movement examination did not reveal spontaneous or positional

Neurotologic evaluation of facial nerve paralysis caused by gunshot wounds.

Facial nerve injury is one of the most common neurotologic sequelae of a gunshot wound (GSW) to the head or neck. However, few neurotologic studies have been performed on the nature and time course of such facial nerve impairments. This study was designed to characterize the neurotologic manifestations and time course of facial nerve paralysis caused by GSWs to the head and neck. We conducted a battery of electrodiagnostic tests on 10 patients who had experienced traumatic facial paralysis due to a GSW to the head or neck. The etiologies of facial nerve paralysis--including direct injury, comp

Clinical and electromyographic assessment of facial nerve function after temporomandibular joint surgery.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the factors that may cause alterations in facial nerve function during temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgeries. Forty-six patients were included (66 joints) between the years 2000 and 2007. Study patients were those undergoing various surgical procedures for the treatment of TMJ disorders. Patients who had made an incomplete recovery from a facial nerve injury resulting from a previous operation and patients who presented with facial palsy after a previous TMJ surgery were excluded. The facial nerve function of all patients was evaluated at different time

Treatment Options in Maxillofacial Fractures.

From 2000 to 2010, 720 patients with facial trauma were admitted in Plastic Surgery Service of Argerich Hospital, Buenos Aires, Argentina; 58 of them with panfacial fractures were included in this study. Height velocity impact is the principal etiology, and most concomitant extrafacial injuries are neurocranium and cervical spine. Common affected areas were orbits, nose, and malar-zygoma. The timing of the treatment was airway evaluation, control of bleeding and consciousness, treatment of associated injuries, and finally facial reconstruction. The applications of craniofacial surgical techniq…

Skiing injuries in Australia.

A prospective study of 1850 skiing injuries which occurred during the 1983 skiing season in Australia is presented. To date, it is the largest prospective review of skiing injuries in Australia. All injuries were seen and treated by the same medical practitioner. In contrast with previous reports, upper extremity injuries and lower extremity injuries were almost equally represented (36% and 42% of the total number of injuries, respectively); injuries to the head, face and neck accounted for 17% of the total number of injuries. The injury rate of 3.80 per 1000 skiers establishes skiing as a saf

[Injuries in the throat-nose-ear area by automobile air bags].

BACKGROUND: Airbags are successful in avoiding or in reducing serious injuries caused by motor vehicle accidents. On the other hand airbag deployment has led to a new kind of injuries. Only a few publications about that item exist. The experiences made with two patients after airbag deployment are described. The relevant literature is discussed. PATIENTS: Two patients after airbag injuries were examined. The face of the first patient hit a regularly expanding airbag. Afterwards his nose was obviously deformed. In the other case both front airbags of a car burst triggered by a frontal crash. T

Surgery of the facial nerve.

The diagnosis and management of facial nerve disorders are challenging aspects of neurotological practice. In Bell's palsy and Herpes Zoster oticus facial nerve decompression is indicated in approximately 10 per cent of cases within the first three weeks if 90-95 per cent degeneration has occurred. The presence of a dry eye determines whether the lesion is proximal to the geniculate ganglion and a middle fossa approach is necessary. Injury to the facial nerve occurs most commonly as a result of temporal bone fractures, from either blunt trauma or penetrating wounds. Occasionally iatrogenic inj
