BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis is a severe soft-tissue infection characterized by a fulminant course and high mortality. Early recognition is difficult as the disease is often clinically indistinguishable from cellulitis and other soft-tissue infections early in its evolution. Our aim was to study the manifestations of the cutaneous signs of necrotizing fasciitis as the disease evolves.
METHODS: This was a retrospective study on patients with necrotizing fasciitis at a single institution. Their charts were reviewed to document the daily cutaneous changes from the time of presentation (day

Necrotizing fasciitis is a soft-tissue infection characterized by extensive necrosis of subcutaneous fat, neurovascular structures, and fascia. In general, fascial necrosis precedes muscle and skin involvement, hence its namesake. Initially, this uncommon and rapidly progressive disease process can present as a form of cellulitis or superficial abscess. However, the high morbidity and mortality rates associated with necrotizing fasciitis suggest a more serious, ominous condition. A delay in diagnosis can result in progressive advancement highlighted by widespread infection, multiple-organ invo

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly progressive and potentially fatal infection. It is characterized by extensive subcutaneous and muscle necrosis. Aeromonus hydrophilia is a gram-negative faculatively anaerobic bacillus that is part of the normal flora of nonfecal sewage and is found in most water systems, soil, and fresh brackish water. Necrotizing fasciitis caused by A. hydrophilia have occurred in children who had underlying systemic diseases or immune dysfunction. We report a 14-year-old boy without underlying systemic diseases or immunodeficiency who developed necrotizing fasciitis second

Critical care nurses within acute care settings are responsible for providing healthcare to a wide variety of patients and, consequently, knowledge regarding how to care for a patient with acute necrotizing fasciitis is imperative. A case study is presented to evidence the need for a multidisciplinary approach. Necrotizing fasciitis is defined and treatment options are presented. Caring for this patient is very challenging and demands a multidisciplinary team to coordinate all aspects of care to promote better patient outcomes.

Necrotizing fasciitis of the hand is a rare clinical entity, frequently with devastating functional consequences. A case of necrotizing fasciitis of the thumb and thenar eminence caused by Group A Streptococcus is reported and the management of this condition in the upper limb discussed.

Craniocervical necrotizing fasciitis (CCNF) has a potentially high morbidity and mortality. Late presentation, shock and disseminated intravascular coagulation are associated with a particularly poor prognosis. Early recognition and aggressive treatment is advised. A case report is presented of a late presentation of necrotizing fasciitis of the face, neck and anterior thoracic wall. Despite adverse prognostic indicators, surgical debridement was performed. Intensive medical treatment included continuous renal replacement therapy and intravenous immunoglobulin. Survival in this case illustrate

Necrotizing fasciitis is a devastating soft tissue infection affecting fascias and subcutaneous soft tissues. Literature reviews have identified several related risk factors, including malignancy, alcoholism, malnutrition, diabetes, male gender and old age. There are only scanty case reports in the literature describing its rare association with colorectal malignancy. All published cases are attributed to bowel perforation resulting in necrotizing fasciitis over the perineal region. Isolated upper or lower limb diseases are rarely identified. Simultaneous upper and lower limb infection in colo

Shewanella putrefaciens rarely causes infections in humans. This report describes a case of necrotizing fasciitis caused by S. putrefaciens in a uremic patient who recovered in spite of inadequate antibiotic treatment. S. putrefaciens is a possible causative organism of necrotizing fasciitis, and the absence of any sign of systemic infection cannot rule out the possibility of invasive infection in uremic patients. Surgical intervention is important in such cases.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis is an uncommon disease with high morbidity and mortality rates. Little is known about the role of histopathologic examination in disease prognosis.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted to determine what correlations, if any, exist between the histopathologic features of resected tissue in patients with necrotizing fasciitis and clinical outcome.
RESULTS: Eighty-two cases of necrotizing fasciitis that occurred between January 1990 and December 2002 were identified. Histopathologic findings were available for review in 63 cases. A novel histopathologic

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly progressive soft tissue infection involving the skin, subcutaneous tissue, and superficial fascia. It is a rare entity in the pediatric population. The specific etiologic factors that contribute to the establishment of necrotizing fasciitis in children are not evident. It may occur after minor trauma or operative procedures. The authors report a case of necrotizing fasciitis after hypospadias repair. This complication is extremely unusual and to the authors' knowledge has not been previously described.

A patient with a history of type II diabetes mellitus (DM), end stage renal disease (ESRD), and congestive heart failure (CHF) developed necrotizing fasciitis caused by Serratia marcescens after scraping his leg on rocks in a river while fishing. Aggressive management with surgical debridement, antibiotics, and pressure support was unsuccessful.

We present the case of a 70-year-old woman with necrotizing fasciitis of the right leg, sepsis and bacteraemia with Escherichia coli. Chest wall emphysema, detected on standard radiograph and the presence of air in the soft-tissue of the foot was the reason for prompt surgical drainage in addition to standard fluid resuscitation and antibiotic therapy. There was no evidence of underlying diabetes mellitus, but unknown chronic renal failure and corticosteroid therapy for rheumatoid arthritis were considered predisposing factors. We present a short overview of this rare life-threatening conditio

A case study is presented of a 7-year-old boy, seriously injured in a car accident, who developed a fatal infection due to Aphophysomyces elegans--a mold of the Mucoracea family. Fungal invasion was initially manifested by a spotted wound in the left lumbar region which developed into a necrotizing fasciitis. Later this progressed to the right lumbar area, including the gluteus and the corresponding flank. Antimycotic treatment proved ineffective, and the child died 8 weeks after the accident. Other cases due to this fungus are reviewed.

OBJECTIVE: We reviewed the cases of 23 patients who were admitted to the hospital with a primary diagnosis of histopathologically confirmed necrotizing fasciitis in the lower abdomen or pelvis. Rapid demise of a healthy postpartum women piqued our interest in trying to identify the early signs and symptoms that may lead to earlier diagnosis and treatment of this often fatal disease.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective analysis of charts of all patients who were admitted to the gynecology and obstetrics services of our hospital systems with a diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis for the past 14 years

Necrotizing fasciitis of the scalp is a life-threatening condition. When Aspergillus is the infectious organism, treatment of the wound and salvage of the patient become a formidable challenge. The authors present an extremely rare case of the successful treatment of scalp necrotizing fasciitis combined with osteomyelitis of the calvarium involving Aspergillus.

A patient with a history of schizophrenia was admitted to our hospital in an already severe stage of necrotizing fasciitis of the neck, complicated with mediastinitis and gangrene. Later on, he also developed a vena cava superior syndrome and sepsis. In the few cases and small series described in the literature, necrotizing fasciitis of the neck is usually associated with surgery or trauma. Less frequently, an orodental or pharyngeal infection, often innocuous, is the underlying cause. None of these causes could be identified in our patient. Initially, on computer-assisted tomography (CT) scan
