Maternal positive skin prick test results and asthma prediction after early childhood wheezing.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have used parental history of asthma or allergy but not positive skin prick test results to predict the evolution of asthma in wheezing infants. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether positive parental skin prick test results serve as a predictive factor for the subsequent development of asthma in a child with a history of wheezing before the age of 3 years. METHODS: In a retrospective cohort study we investigated 91 individuals from 71 families. Enrollment criteria were age 6 to 40 years, history of wheezing before the age of 3 years, and no chronic lung disease other

Mental Health Trajectories of Fathers Following Very Preterm Birth: Associations With Parenting.

OBJECTIVE: Mothers of infants born very preterm (VPT) are at high risk of mental health difficulties. However, less is known about the course of fathers' depressive and anxiety symptoms over time, and the implications this may have for early parenting behaviors. METHODS: In total, 100 fathers of 125 infants born VPT (<30 weeks' gestation) completed questionnaires assessing depressive and anxiety symptoms shortly after their infant's birth, and when their infant reached term-equivalent age, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months' corrected age. At 12 months' corrected age, fathers' parenting behavi

Coming Out to Dad: Young Gay and Bisexual Men's Experiences Disclosing Same-Sex Attraction to Their Fathers.

Few studies have examined the relationship between young gay and bisexual men (YGBM) and their fathers. Based on a phenomenological framework, this study investigated the role of fathers in YGBM's coming-out experience, focusing on how fathers responded to disclosure of same-sex attraction, how fathers' responses compared with sons' expectations, and what sons perceived as having influenced their fathers' responses. Semistructured in-depth interviews with 30 gay and bisexual men aged 18 to 24 years were conducted as part of a larger study; topics explored in the interview included experiences

An evaluation of relations among antisocial behavior, psychopathic traits, and alcohol problems in incarcerated men.

BACKGROUND: The association between antisocial behavior and alcohol problems is well established, but the role that psychopathic traits and other factors such as drinking patterns and motives and family history play in this relationship has not been subjected to much empirical scrutiny. METHODS: A large sample (n=329) of male Federal Correctional Institution inmates participated in structured interviews designed to permit diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder and to assess facets of psychopathic personality as defined by the Hare Psychopathy Checklist-Revised. Prisoners also completed

Knowledge gaps and information seeking by parents about hypospadias.

INTRODUCTION: Parents making complex decisions about hypospadias surgery may experience anxiety and uncertainty related to multiple sources of information with questionable reliability and limited relevance to their concerns. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to identify knowledge gaps, information-seeking behaviors, and informational needs of parents making decisions about hypospadias surgery as an initial step in the development of a hypospadias decision aid. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted semi-structured interviews with English-speaking parents (≥18 years of age) of children with hypos

Exploring the association between parental psychiatric disease and childhood atopic dermatitis: a matched case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal prenatal psychiatric disease has been identified as a possible risk factor for atopic dermatitis development in her children. We quantified the associations between maternal and paternal psychiatric disease and the development of atopic dermatitis in their offspring using nationwide registries. METHODS: All children in Denmark born between 1 January 1996 and 31 December 2011 who developed atopic dermatitis prior to their fifth birthday were identified and individually matched 1:10 with controls from the general population and with children receiving care in a similar ambu

Sociodemographic characteristics of Turkish parents in relation to their recognition of emotional maltreatment.

OBJECTIVES: To develop an instrument which could assess the extent to which emotionally maltreating parental behavior was recognized by Turkish parents (Study 1) and to evaluate a group of parental and family characteristics that were related with their recognition of emotional maltreatment (Study 2). METHODS: Self-administered instruments were used in both studies. In Study 1, a representative sample consisting of a total of 498 parents of children attending public and private preschools, elementary, and high schools in Ankara, were recruited. A 21-item Recognition of Emotional Maltreatment

The prospective association of prenatal anxiety symptoms in mothers and fathers with general child development 14 months postpartum and the mediating role of parent-child bonding: a mediation analysis within the longitudinal cohort study DREAM.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety symptoms during pregnancy are a frequent mental health issue for expectant mothers and fathers. Research revealed that prenatal anxiety symptoms can impact parent-child bonding and child development. This study aims to investigate the prospective relationship between prenatal anxiety symptoms and general child development and whether it is mediated by parent-child bonding. Considering the paucity of perinatal research on fathers, their inclusion is of particular interest. METHODS: Data were derived from the prospective cohort study DREAM including 1,544 mothers and 985 fat

Psychopathology risk transmission in children of parents with substance use disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Children of fathers with substance use disorders are at increased risk for psychopathology, including conduct disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), major depressive disorder, and anxiety disorders. This study examined the distinct influences of parent substance use disorder and other psychopathology in the transmission of the risk for psychopathology to their children. METHOD: The subjects were 1,167 children (ages 6-14 years; 62% were male, 38% were female) from 613 families recruited according to a high-risk paradigm. Of these families, 294 had fathers with a

The association of COVID- 19 parental immunization and transmission of disease to offspring: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The Omicron variant has heightened COVID- 19 infections among children under six, emphasizing the need to understand the role of parental immunization and demographic factors in disease transmission within households. METHODS: This retrospective observational study included 2321 children under six-year-old from February to May 2022 in Isfahan, Iran. Data were sourced from the recorded PERSIAN Birth Cohort data and telephone interviews, focusing on demographic information, child's COVID- 19 exposure during follow-up, infection, and vaccination status of each family member. A different pattern of risk factors for atopic and non-atopic wheezing in 9-12-year-old children.

Few epidemiological studies have compared the risk factors of asthma or wheezing between atopic and non-atopic children. The objective of this study was to determine if there are specific risk factors for current wheezing related to atopic status in schoolchildren. Schoolchildren 9-12 yr of age from three Spanish cities (n = 2720) were subject to a cross-sectional study of asthma risk factors (by questionnaire) and atopy (by skin prick test) according to the ISAAC phase-II protocol. Risk factors for current wheezing (in the last 12 months) as reported by parents were investigated among the ato

Functional analysis of natural mutations in two TWIST protein motifs.

The basic helix-loop-helix protein Twist, a transcriptional repressor, is essential for embryogenesis in both invertebrates and vertebrates. Haploinsufficiency of the human TWIST1 gene, which causes the craniosynostosis disorder Saethre-Chotzen syndrome (SCS), is related to failure to repress transcription of CDKN1A (which encodes p21/WAF1/CIP1), promoting osteoblast differentiation. We have examined the functional significance of natural TWIST1 variants present in craniosynostosis patients and in their healthy relatives. Both deletion and duplication variants of the glycine-rich tract Gly5Ala

Child abuse and neglect in Greece: sociomedical aspects.

Fifty-four abused and neglected children have been referred to our multidisciplinary team for assessment and treatment. There were many more boys than girls (36 vs 18) and the mean age was 3.3 years. Half of the children were admitted for medical reasons and abuse or neglect were secondary findings. The medical findings included bruises and fractures, head injuries, knife wounds, and failure to thrive. The children's main characteristics were: "difficult children," unwanted pregnancies, difficult pregnancies and deliveries and half of them were separated from their mothers during the first mon

Identifying experiences of physical and psychological violence in childhood that jeopardize mental health in adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined associations between profiles of physical and psychological violence in childhood from parents and two dimensions of mental health in adulthood (negative affect and psychological well-being). Profiles were distinguished by the types of violence retrospectively self-reported (only physical, only psychological, or both psychological and physical violence), as well as by the frequency at which each type of violence reportedly occurred (never, rarely, or frequently). METHODS: Multivariate regression models were estimated using data from the National Survey of Midlif

Emotional competence and behavior problems: Differences across Preschool Assessment of Attachment classifications.

This study examined attachment in association with preschoolers' emotional functioning among 54 predominantly low-income families living in Appalachia. Attachment was assessed at age 4 years using the Strange Situation (Ainsworth, Blehar, Waters, & Wall, 1978) and classified with the PAA (Crittenden, 2004). Emotional competence was measured via an interview about children's memories for six emotions, rated in terms of both emotion understanding and regulation. Parent-, teacher-, and self-reports of children's internalizing and externalizing symptoms were also completed. Questionnaires and inte

Early-Life Experiences as Moderators of the Relationship Between Extreme Heat and Alcohol Consumption among Older Adults: Quantitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Climate change has intensified the frequency and duration of extreme heat events worldwide, posing growing public health risks, … ated with increased alcohol consumption (0.21% per additional extreme heat day, P<.001). A positive father-child relationship buffered this effect, while adverse early-life experiences, including law enforcement encounters (0.08%, P<.001) and parental substance abuse (0.05%, P<.001), exacerbated it. CONCLUSIONS: Given the link between extreme heat and alcohol use in ol …

Parental epigenetic age acceleration and risk of adverse birth outcomes: the Norwegian mother, father and child cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined associations between maternal epigenetic age acceleration and adverse birth outcomes, and none have investigated paternal epigenetic age acceleration. Our objective was to assess the associations of parental (both maternal and paternal) epigenetic age acceleration in relation to birth outcomes. METHODS: Parental epigenetic age was estimated using seven established epigenetic clocks in 2198 mothers and 2193 fathers from the Norwegian Mother, Father, and Child Cohort Study (MoBa). Individual epigenetic age acceleration was then calculated as residuals from

Survival from childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia: the impact of social inequality in the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: Survival from childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) has continued to improve in economically-developed regions of the world, but 20% of patients still die within 5-years of diagnosis. Treatment is prolonged and complex; and as survival rates plateau, factors relating to socio-economic status and/or treatment adherence are increasingly scrutinised as potentially important determinants of outcome. METHODS: Predicated on the frame-work of the United Kingdom (UK) NHS, the relationship between socio-demographic factors and ALL survival is examined here using data from a large f

Digital health technologies for self-identification of the risk of perinatal mental illness: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal mental illness affects up to 20% of mothers and 10% of fathers and is associated with adverse parental and child outcomes. Digital health technologies enabling self-identification of perinatal mental illness risk may improve early detection and reduce access barriers. This systematic review evaluated the effectiveness and safety of digital health technologies for self-identification of the risk of perinatal mental illness and examined social, organizational, and legal aspects relevant to their implementation. METHODS: A systematic review with narrative synthesis was cond
