INTRODUCTION: Public speaking fears (PSF) are highly prevalent in the general population. They are also among the most common symptoms of social anxiety disorder, which typically has an adolescent onset and has recently been increasingly recognized as a persistent and impairing disorder across various cultures in the world.
METHODS: This study examined PSF and their associated factors among 17,615 adolescents, aged 12-18, in a large-scale school-based community survey in Japan.
RESULTS: PSF was noted in 7.3% of the students. The prevalence was higher among girls than among boys, and it had a…

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: There is good reason to consider the role of social anxiety processes in paranoia; both the research and clinical literature indicate significant overlap between the two presentations. The aim of this study was to explore cognition and behaviour that are typically associated with social phobia, in people with paranoia, and then to draw out theoretical and clinical implications.
METHOD: We used a cross-sectional between-subjects design to compare participants with persecutory delusions (without social phobia), social phobia, a clinical control group with panic disorder, an

In environments where resources are difficult to obtain and enhanced cognitive capabilities might be adaptive, brain structures associated with cognitive traits may also be enhanced. In our previous studies, we documented a clear and significant relationship among environmental conditions, memory and hippocampal structure using ten populations of black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus) over a large geographic range. In addition, focusing on just the two populations from the geographical extremes of our large-scale comparison, Alaska and Kansas, we found enhanced problem-solving capabili

The effects of sex and stress hormones on classical fear conditioning have been subject of recent experimental studies. A correlation approach between basal cortisol concentrations and neuronal activation in fear-related structures seems to be a promising alternative approach in order to foster our understanding of how cortisol influences emotional learning. In this functional magnetic resonance imaging study, participants with varying sex hormone status (20 men, 15 women taking oral contraceptives, 15 women tested in the luteal phase) underwent an instructed fear conditioning protocol with ge…

UNLABELLED: Specific phobia of vomiting (also known as emetophobia) is a relatively understudied phobia with respect to its aetiology, clinical features and treatment. In this stage, research is mostly based on people with self-reported fear of vomiting. This paper presents a survey on the clinical features of fear of vomiting of individuals. Self-reported vomit-fearful subjects from the Dutch community and from an Internet support group are included. Both vomit-fearful groups were characterized by high reports of fear, the presence of panic symptoms, and by extensive avoidance and safety beha…

BACKGROUND: Acrophobia is one of the most prevalent phobias, affecting as many as 1 in 20 individuals. Of course, heights often evoke fear in the general population too, and this suggests that acrophobia might actually represent the hypersensitive manifestation of an everyday, rational fear. In this study, we assessed the role of sensory and cognitive variables in acrophobia.
METHODS: Forty-five participants (Mean age 25.07 years, 71% female) were assessed using a booklet with self-reports as well as several behavioral measures. The data analysis consisted in multivariate linear regression us…

The concepts thinspiration and fear of fat are crucial regarding the development and maintenance of body image disturbances and eating pathology. This study aimed to advance our current understanding of these two motivational concepts. Unlike previous studies that have primarily relied on self report measures to investigate thinspiration and fear of fat, we applied an indirect measure, namely a Stimulus Response Compatibility (SRC) task. During our SRC task, undergraduate female students were instructed to symbolically approach and avoid pictures of thin and chubby models. Hence, the participa…

The current study examined fear of negative evaluation (FNE), the core fear associated with social anxiety, in the context of the dual pathway model of the etiology of bulimia nervosa. Our primary aim was to improve the understanding of the development of bulimic psychopathology. We investigated the relationships between FNE, the risk factors of the dual pathway model and bulimic symptoms using path analysis in a sample of female undergraduates (N=210). The inclusion of FNE increased the predictive ability of the model to account for 49% of the variance in bulimic symptoms compared to previous…

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate pain intensity-related differences in physical performance and fear of falling in elderly women with osteoporosis. A sample of 82 osteoporotic women (73.8±8.1 years) with and without vertebral fractures was included. Numeric rating scale (NRS) measures (0=no pain, 10=unbearable) were applied to obtain actual pain intensity and to stratify between patients with mild (0-3), moderate (4-6) and severe (7-10) pain. Activity-related fear of falling was evaluated with the Falls Efficacy Scale-International Version (FES-I). Physical performance mea…

BACKGROUND: Depression is associated with neural abnormalities in emotional processing.
AIMS: This study explored whether these abnormalities underlie risk for depression.
METHOD: We compared the neural responses of volunteers who were at high and low-risk for the development of depression (by virtue of high and low neuroticism scores; high-N group and low-N group respectively) during the presentation of fearful and happy faces using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
RESULTS: The high-N group demonstrated linear increases in response in the right fusiform gyrus and left middle t…

Cognitive models of social anxiety suggest that fear of negative evaluation (FNE) is the central cognitive dimension underlying the disorder. The Fear of Positive Evaluation Scale (FPES; Weeks, Heimberg, & Rodebaugh, 2008) was recently developed to assess an additional cognitive dimension purported to underlie social anxiety disorder (SAD), but its psychometric properties have yet to be examined in clinical populations. The present study, with 133 treatment-seeking patients, examined the applicability of the FPES with a clinical sample. Results indicated that the FPES was factorially distinct …

The present study evaluated the utility of parent- and child-reported social fears for reaching a diagnosis of social phobia in youth. The diagnostic utility of (a) the number of fears and (b) specific feared social situations was examined. The sample included 140 youth and their parents: youth diagnosed with social phobia (n=50), youth diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder or separation anxiety disorder but not social phobia (n=49), and youth without an anxiety disorder (n=41). Youth and their parents were interviewed separately using the Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule for Childre…

This study compared imagery rescripting, in vivo exposure therapy and their combination in the treatment of snake fear. Imaginal ability was assessed pre-treatment, and was correlated with baseline avoidance. Snake fearful individuals were randomly assigned to cognitive therapy involving imagery rescripting, in vivo exposure, a combination of the two, or a relaxation control. All active treatment groups improved significantly more than the control group in both fearfulness and behavioral approach. There were no significant differences between the active treatment groups, although the combined …

The treatment of learned fear disorders with medications is still unsatisfactory although some have been shown useful when used as adjuncts to behavioral therapy.

Although extinction has attracted considerable attention in recent years, there has been very little empirical work on extinction during development. Using Pavlovian fear conditioning, the authors provide evidence for developmental differences in extinction. Specifically, Postnatal Day (PND) 23 rats exhibited recovery of an extinguished freezing response to an auditory conditioned stimulus when tested in a context different from that in which extinction occurred (i.e., renewal) or when injected with the gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA) inverse agonist FG7142 prior to test. In contrast, PND 16 r…

A prerequisite for the success of any health or social care policy is the ability to address the concerns of the target group. The findings described in the present paper form part of a larger study of the hopes and fears that older people hold for their future. Data were collected through a cross-sectional, population-based telephone interview survey conducted in New South Wales, Australia, from 1999 to 2000. The participants (n = 8881) were randomly selected, community-dwelling older people (>/= 65 years). Survey weights were used for estimating proportions and for all statistical inferences…

A conceptualization of claustrophobia [Rachman, S., & Taylor, S. (1993). Analyses of claustrophobia. Journal of Anxiety Disorders, 7, 281-291] was evaluated in the context of magnetic resonance imaging. One hundred eleven students responded to questionnaires that quantified fear of suffocation, fear of restriction, and sensitivity to anxiety symptoms. Sixty-four of them were then exposed to a mock magnetic resonance imaging assessment; maximum subjective fear during the mock assessment was self-reported, behavioral reactions to the mock assessment were characterized, and heart rates before and…

This paper examines a necessary condition for successful exploitation of a virtual environment (VE) in therapeutic intervention for fear of public speaking. The condition is that clients experience a degree of anxiety in the VE that is similar to what they would have been expected to experience in a similar real world setting. We refer to this as a "presence" response. The experimental study involved 20 people who were confident public speakers and 16 who were phobic, assessed on a standard psychological scale. Half of each group spoke within a VE depicting an empty seminar room, and the other…
