Current advances of integrated processes combining chemical absorption and biological reduction for NO x removal from flue gas.

Anthropogenic nitrogen oxides (NO x ) emitted from the fossil-fuel-fired power plants cause adverse environmental issues such as acid rain, urban ozone smoke, and photochemical smog. A novel chemical absorption-biological reduction (CABR) integrated process under development is regarded as a promising alternative to the conventional selective catalytic reduction processes for NO x removal from the flue gas because it is economic and environmentally friendly. CABR process employs ferrous ethylenediaminetetraacetate [Fe(II)EDTA] as a solvent to absorb the NO x following microbial denitrification

Computational study of the Fe(CN)2CO cofactor and its binding to HypC protein.

In the intricate maturation process of [NiFe]-hydrogenases, the Fe(CN)2CO cofactor is first assembled in a HypCD complex with iron coordinated by cysteines from both proteins and CO is added after ligation of cyanides. The small accessory protein HypC is known to play a role in delivering the cofactor needed for assembling the hydrogenase active site. However, the chemical nature of the Fe(CN)2CO moiety and the stability of the cofactor-HypC complex are open questions. In this work, we address geometries, properties, and the nature of bonding of all chemical species involved in formation and b

A chelate complex-enhanced luminol system for selective determination of Co(II), Fe(II) and Cr(III).

A determination method for Co(II), Fe(II) and Cr(III) ions by luminol-H2 O2 system using chelating reagents is presented. A metal ion-chelating ligand complex with a Co(II) ion and a chelating reagent like ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) produced highly enhanced chemiluminescence (CL) intensity as well as longer lifetime in the luminol-H2 O2 system compared to metals that exist as free ions. Whereas free Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions had a strong catalytic effect on the luminol-H2 O2 system, significantly, the complexes of Cu(II) and Pb(II) with chelating reagents lost their catalytic activity

Characterization and optimization of Fe(II)Cit-No reduction by Pseudomonas sp.

Biological reduction of nitric oxide (NO), chelated by ferrous L (L: chelate reagent), to N2 is one of the core processes in a chemical absorption-biological reduction integrated technique for nitrogen oxide (NOx) removal from flue gases. In this study, a newly isolated strain, Pseudomonas sp., was used to reduce NO chelated by Fe(II)Cit (Cit: citrate) as Fe(II)Cit-NO, and some factors were investigated. The results showed that, at the NO concentration of 670 mg/m3, 65.9% of NO was totally reduced within 25 h under anaerobic conditions, and the optimal conditions for the bioreduction of NO wer

Chromate reduction in Fe(II)-containing soil affected by hyperalkaline leachate from chromite ore processing residue.

Highly alkaline (pH 12.2) chromate contaminated leachate (990 μmol L(-1)) has been entering soils below a chromite ore processing residue disposal (COPR) site for over 100 years. The soil immediately beneath the waste has a pH of 11→12.5, contains 0.3→0.5% (w/w) chromium, and 45→75% of the microbially available iron is Fe(II). Despite elevated pH, a viable microbial consortium of Firmicutes dominated iron reducers was isolated from this COPR affected soil. Soil pH and Cr concentration decrease with distance from the waste. XAS analysis of soil samples indicated that Cr is present as a mixed Cr

[Treatment of simulated produced wastewater from polymer flooding in oil production using dithiocarbamate-type flocculant].

A dithiocarbamate flocculant, DTC (T403), was prepared by the reaction of amine-terminated polyoxypropane-ether compound known as Jeffamine-T403 and carbon disulfide in alkaline solution. The oil removal efficiency of DTC (T403) for simulated produced wastewater from polymer flooding in oil production was studied by Jar-test. The effect of the dosage of DTC (T403), hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM), Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions, and pH on the oil removal efficiency of DTC (T403) was investigated. The results showed that the chelate polymer formed by DTC (T403) and Fe2+ ion has good oil removal performanc

Enhancement of alpha- and beta-galactosidase activity in Lactobacillus reuteri by different metal ions.

The hydrolysis of oligosaccharides and lactose is of great importance to the food industry. Normally, oligosaccharides like raffinose, stachyose, and verbascose which are rich in different plants like soy bean are considered indigestible by the human gut. Moreover, many humans suffer from lactose intolerance due to the absence of effective enzyme that can digest lactose. alpha-Galactosidase can digest oligosaccharides like raffinose, while beta-galactosidases can hydrolyze lactose. Therefore, selection of microorganisms safe for human use and capable of producing high levels of enzymes becomes

Evaluation of complexed NO reduction mechanism in a chemical absorption-biological reduction integrated NO(x) removal system.

Biological reduction of nitric oxide (NO) from Fe(II) ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)-NO to dinitrogen (N(2)) is a core process for the continual nitrogen oxides (NO(x)) removal in the chemical absorption-biological reduction integrated approach. To explore the biological reduction of Fe(II)EDTA-NO, the stoichiometry and mechanism of Fe(II)EDTA-NO reduction with glucose or Fe(II)EDTA as electron donor were investigated. The experimental results indicate that the main product of complexed NO reduction is N(2), as there was no accumulation of nitrous oxide, ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate af

Biosorbents prepared from wood particles treated with anionic polymer and iron salt: effect of particle size on phosphate adsorption.

Biomass-based adsorbents have been widely studied as a cost-effective and environmentally-benign means to remove pollutants and nutrients from water. A two-stage treatment of aspen wood particles with solutions of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and ferrous chloride afforded a biosorbent that was effective in removing phosphate from test solutions. FTIR spectroscopy of the biosorbent samples showed a decrease in the intensity of the carboxylate signal coinciding with a decrease in particle size. Elemental analysis results showed the iron content of both the biosorbent samples, and wood particles

Identification of active agents for tetrachloroethylene degradation in Portland cement slurry containing ferrous iron.

Experimental studies were designed to identify the active agents in Fe(II)-based degradative solidification/stabilization (Fe(II)-DS/S) that are responsible for the degradation of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) as well as the conditions that enhance the formation of these active agents. First, the conditions that lead to maximizing production of the active agents were identified by measuring the ability of various chemical mixtures to degrade PCE. Results showed that Fe(II), Fe(III), and Cl were the elements most closely associated with high degradation rates. In addition to elemental composition,

Hexavalent chromium removal by reduction with ferrous sulfate, coagulation, and filtration: a pilot-scale study.

A flow-through pilot-scale system was tested for removal of Cr(VI) from contaminated groundwater in Glendale, California. The process consisted of the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(lll) using ferrous sulfate followed by coagulation and filtration. Results indicated that the technology could reduce influent Cr(VI) concentrations of 100 microg L(-1) to below detectable levels and also remove total Cr (Cr(VI) plus Cr(lll)) to very low concentrations (< 5 microg L(-1)) under optimized conditions. Complete reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(lll) was accomplished with Fe(ll) doses of 10-50 times the Cr(Vl) conce

[Generation of active forms of oxygen by antibiotics of the tetracycline series during tetracycline catalysis of oxidation of ferrous iron].

During oxidation of Fe(2+) catalyzed by tetracyclines there was recorded lucigenin, activated chemiluminescence evident of generation of the oxygen radicals. It was also observed that during the Fe(2+) oxidation by the molecular oxygen catalyzed by tetracyclines there generated hydrogen peroxide which accelerated the Fe(2+) oxidation recorded photometrically by the formation of strongly absorbing tetracycline complexes with Fe(2+). In the presence of ascorbate reducing Fe(2+) in the complexes with tetracyclines and their subsequent oxidation there generated radicals modifying the antibiotic mo

Management of oral submucous fibrosis: a conservative approach.

Three hundred twenty-six patients with oral submucous fibrosis were divided into two groups and treated either with conventional submucosal injections of steroids and hyaluronidase, or with topical vitamin A, steroid applications, and oral iron preparations. The results were compared. The conventional treatment with injections was found to be hazardous, whereas the conservative treatment was found to be safe. Both treatments were purely palliative.

[Drug-induced esophageal ulcers].

In cases without a history of gastrointestinal or cardiac disease, acute odynophagia prompts the tentative diagnosis of drug-induced esophageal ulcer. Possible causes are tetracycline, clindamycin, emepronium bromide, potassium chloride, etc. Other diseases such as carcinoma can be ruled out by endoscopy and biopsy. To avoid such esophageal lesions drugs should be taken with sufficient fluid and not immediately before bedrest.
