The effects of oral administration of tamoxifen (a synthetic non-steroidal anti-oestrogen) at doses of 40, 200 or 400 micrograms kg-1 day-1 on the circulating concentrations of LH, FSH, prolactin, testosterone and oestradiol, weights of pituitary, testes, secondary sex organs and the fertility of adult male rats were determined. The continuation rate at the end of this five-year clinical study was 60% with no accidental pregnancy occurring throughout the five years. The post-removal conception rate in women desiring pregnancy was 92% at the end of two years. The majority of acceptors described the overall experience with the implants as favourable. In fact, 75% of the women planning to use contraception after removal of the implants were going to use implants again.

Hemodynamic changes in the vascular bed of the affected testis were studied in 45 sterile and 6 fertile patients with varicocele. The examination method used was modified abdominal angiography. The most frequently recorded change in the arterial bed was persistence of the contrast medium in the left internal testicular artery (5 patients). Data from a 1982 sample survey of 3,830 married women below age 50 in a district of Beijing City are applied to the Bongaarts model of the proximate determinants of fertility. Further development of an experimental model for evaluating fertility in cryptorchidism led to studies of unilateral cryptorchidism, endocrinological cryptorchidism, and the effects of treatment. The ability to conceive after discontinuing contraceptive practice is an important concern for women who have not completed their families. This paper focuses on 576 women who had their IUDs removed for planned pregnancy. The data from this study add further evidence that fertility subsequent to IUD removal is not impaired. Sixty-four patients who had unilateral or bilateral orchiopexy for cryptorchism between 1950 and 1960 responded to a questionnaire. Marriage rates were the same as in a control group. Unilaterally cryptorchid patients had normal paternity rates and sperm concentrations on semen analysis. Only 2 of 15 bilaterally cryptorchid patients had fathered children, while severe oligospermia was present in all 10 who had semen analysis performed. Thirty per cent of pexed testes had a cosmetically poor result.

Pregnancy rates in 651 subfertile couples in which the man had a varicocele were analysed by life table methods and were not found to be significantly different before and after testicular vein ligation performed in 283 patients. Estimated proportions of couples conceiving were roughly 30% by one year and 45% by two years in both groups. The operation was also not associated with improvement in results of semen analysis. These findings suggest that testicular vein ligation for varicoceles does not improve fertility.
