Health Care-Specific Enacted HIV-Related Stigma's Association with Antiretroviral Therapy Adherence and Viral Suppression Among People Living with HIV in Florida.

Among people living with HIV (PLWH) in Florida, <2/3 are virally suppressed (viral load <200 copies/mL). Previous theoretical frameworks have pointed to HIV-related stigma as an important factor for viral suppression; an important outcome related to the HIV continuum of care. This study aims to analyze the association between enacted HIV-related stigma and antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence and viral suppression among a sample of PLWH in Florida. The overall sample (n = 932) was male (66.0%), majority greater than 45 years of age (63.5%), black (58.1%), and non-Hispanic (79.7%). Adjusted o…

CNAct-1 gene is differentially expressed in the subtropical mosquito Culex nigripalpus (Diptera: Culicidae), the primary West Nile Virus vector in Florida.

Analysis of differentially expressed genes is a common molecular biological tool to investigate changes in mosquito genes after a bloodmeal or parasite exposure. We report here the characterization of a differentially expressed actin gene, CNAct-1, from the subtropical mosquito, Culex nigripalpus Theobald (Diptera: Culicidae). The CNAct-1 genomic clone is 1.525 kb, includes one 66-bp intron, and a 328-bp 3'-untranslated region. The 376-amino acid putative translation product shares high similarity with muscle-specific actin proteins from other insects, including Culex pipiens pipiens L., Aedes

Determinants of dental care use in dentate adults: six-monthly use during a 24-month period in the Florida Dental Care Study.

The objective of this study is to describe for a diverse sample of dentate adults the incidence of dental care use and predisposing, enabling, and need correlates of that use. The Florida Dental Care Study (FDCS) is a prospective longitudinal cohort study of persons who at baseline had at least one natural tooth, were 45 years or older, and who resided in north Florida, U.S.A. An in-person interview and clinical dental examination were conducted at baseline and 24 months after baseline, with 6-monthly telephone interviews between those times. Seventy-seven percent of subjects reported one or m…

Perspectives on Environmental and Occupational Exposures and Cancer Risk From Florida's Wildland Firefighters: A Forestry and Wildland Risk Discussions (FORWRD) Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Firefighters responding to wildland and wildland-urban interface (WUI) fires increasingly navigate a hazardous landscape of environmental pollutants and occupational risks that may influence their health risk perceptions, yet their firsthand experiences and work-related safety concerns are insufficiently understood. METHODS: Between December 2024 and February 2025, we conducted seven focus groups and four key informant interviews with 51 Florida Forest Service personnel, whose service averaged 11.5 years. Qualitative analysis of interview data employed a coding reliability themati…

Changes in Schedule II oral opioid volume dispensed in a private health plan following Florida's Acute Pain Opioid Restriction Law.

BACKGROUND: Florida's House Bill 21 (HB21), implemented into law on July 1, 2018, limited opioid prescriptions for acute pain to a 3-day supply. While the law has been associated with a decrease in opioid prescribing for acute pain, its effect on opioid volume dispensed at the plan level remains unknown. OBJECTIVES: To assess the impact of HB21 on the total volume dispensed of oral Schedule II opioids. We evaluated the change from before to after the law's implementation in (1) total number of opioid units dispensed per month and (2) total morphine milligram equivalent (MMEs) dispensed per mon…

Quantity and types of microplastics in the organic tissues of the eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica and Atlantic mud crab Panopeus herbstii from a Florida estuary.

This study determined the quantity and diversity of microplastics in water and soft tissues of eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) and Atlantic mud crabs (Panopeus herbstii) in Mosquito Lagoon, a shallow, microtidal estuary along the east coast of central Florida. One-liter water samples had an average of 23.1 microplastic pieces (n = 15). Crabs (n = 90) had an average of 4.2 pieces in tissues/individual plus an average of 20.3 pieces/individual temporarily entangled in exposed surfaces and released within 5 days in tanks. Adult oysters (n = 90) had an average of 16.5 microplastic pieces/i…

A GIS analysis of the relationship between sinkholes, dry-well complaints and groundwater pumping for frost-freeze protection of winter strawberry production in Florida.

Florida is riddled with sinkholes due to its karst topography. Sometimes these sinkholes can cause extensive damage to infrastructure and homes. It has been suggested that agricultural practices, such as sprinkler irrigation methods used to protect crops, can increase the development of sinkholes, particularly when temperatures drop below freezing, causing groundwater levels to drop quickly during groundwater pumping. In the strawberry growing region, Dover/Plant City, Florida, the effects have caused water shortages resulting in dry-wells and ground subsidence through the development of sinkh…

Positional asphyxiation in adults. A series of 30 cases from the Dade and Broward County Florida Medical Examiner Offices from 1982 to 1990.

Over a 9-year period, 30 cases of positional (or postural) asphyxia were identified in the Dade and Broward County (Florida) Medical Examiner Offices. The victims had an average age of 50.6 years with no significant sex or racial differences as compared with the general medical examiner population. Chronic alcoholism or acute alcohol intoxication was a significant risk factor in 75% of cases and these had an average postmortem ethanol concentration of 0.24 g%. Signs of mechanical asphyxiation (petechiae and/or combined lung weights greater than 900 g) were present in 93% of cases. Victims were…

Acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis, Key West, Florida. An assessment of risk factors for introduction of illness into households and secondary spread during the 1981 epidemic.

From August 22 to November 6, 1981, 989 cases of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis were identified in Key West, Florida. The outbreak probably began when an infected 12-year-old Key West resident returned from the Bahamas and transmitted the illness to several neighborhood playmates. The rate of illness was highest for school-aged children, and a high proportion of cases occurred among blacks living in two adjacent low-income housing tracts. A telephone survey of persons living in these two tracts showed that the risk for introduction of illness into a household was 3.8 times greater for famili…

Evaluation of Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance System Electronic Laboratory Processing in Florida: Automating Case Creation, Reporting, and Closure of Chlamydia and Gonorrhea Cases.

BACKGROUND: Each year, Florida Department of Health staff process hundreds of thousands of electronically received laboratory results for chlamydia (CT) and gonorrhea (GC). These processing steps are currently performed manually in Florida's surveillance system and divert from other sexually transmitted disease prevention efforts. We developed processes that would automate these procedures and evaluated the impact on potential programmatic time savings. METHODS: We evaluated 575,952 electronic CT/GC laboratory results from January 2019 to December 2021. Laboratory results were processed throu…

Determinants of public health and interventions to address HIV infection among men who have sex with men in Miami-Dade County, Florida, USA.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among men who have sex with men (MSM) has been recognized as a public health problem in Miami-Dade County, Florida, USA. This was found to be a significant problem in our need assessment as evidenced by the HIV incidence rate of 28.4 per 100,000 population, which is higher than the average incidence reported for the state of Florida. MSM account for the mostly affected group, reaching 59% of all the new cases. A review of the HIV determinants was conducted using an ecological framework. At the individual level, sexual abuse, alcohol, and drug consumption were…

Trends in Use of Prescription Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Medications Before vs After Implementation of a Florida Law Restricting Opioid Prescribing for Acute Pain.

IMPORTANCE: Previous research has shown an immediate reduction in new opioid users and use after implementation of the opioid supply restriction laws. Assessment of the association between opioid restrictions and alternative treatment options, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), is needed to evaluate potential unintended consequences for patients requiring analgesia. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between an opioid restriction law in Florida and use of prescription NSAIDs. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This quality improvement study used interrupted time serie…

TRUCK-MOUNTED NATULAR 2EC (SPINOSAD) ULV RESIDUAL TREATMENT IN A SIMULATED URBAN ENVIRONMENT TO CONTROL AEDES AEGYPTI AND AEDES ALBOPICTUS IN NORTH FLORIDA.

Preemptive treatment of dry habitats with an ultra-low volume (ULV) residual larvicide may be effective in an integrated vector management program to control populations of container-inhabiting Aedes mosquitoes, key vectors of Zika, dengue, and chikungunya viruses. We exposed dry, artificial containers placed in exposed and protected locations to Natular 2EC (spinosad) larvicide applied with a truck-mounted ULV sprayer in a simulated urban setting in North Florida, and later introduced water and Ae. aegypti or Ae. albopictus larvae to conduct bioassays. Up to 50% mortality was observed in bioa…

Phase I and II liver enzyme activities in juvenile alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) collected from three sites in the Kissimmee-Everglades drainage, Florida (USA).

We examined CYP1A (measured using hepatic EROD and MROD activities) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activities in juvenile alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) collected from three sites with varying contamination in the Kissimmee-Everglades drainage in south Florida. We hypothesized that contaminants present in areas with intermediate or higher contaminant concentrations would alter hepatic enzyme activities in juvenile alligators from those sites when compared to hepatic enzyme activity in animals from the area with the least contamination. EROD activity was found to be higher in anim…

Rainfall-directed oviposition behavior of Culex nigripalpus (Diptera: Culicidae) and its influence on St. Louis encephalitis virus transmission in Indian River County, Florida.

Resting Culex nigripalpus Theobald were collected with a ground aspirator three times a week in Indian River County, Fla., from January 1985 through December 1987. The number of green (newly emerged), empty, blood-fed, and gravid females in each collection was counted; up to 100 empty females were dissected to estimate the abundance of empty, parous females in the population. In general, this species was uncommon during the dry season from January through June but increased during the wet season in July and remained abundant through early winter. During the wet season, green, parous, and gravi
