Migration of retained broken chopper tip after phacoemulsification.

We report removal of a retained broken chopper tip after phacoemulsification. Although the foreign body was thought to be stable in the ciliary sulcus 2 months postoperatively, it dislocated into the anterior chamber 8 months later. It was removed with a microforceps under gonioscopic visualization. Although previous reports suggest that retained metallic fragments after phacoemulsification can be left in place if they are difficult to access and appear stationary, our case highlights the potential for long-term instability. We therefore recommend consideration of surgical removal with the use

Intraluminal migration of a gossypiboma, a rare complication of a problem we should never have to face.

After surgery, forgetting instruments, gauze, surgical pads, cotton, or other surgical materials is a serious but avoidable complication. Symptoms are broad and will depend on the location of the gossypiboma and the body's reaction against it. Most will manifest either as an exudative inflammatory or fibrotic reaction. Intraluminal migration is relatively rare and, in most cases, will mimic symptoms of abdominal obstruction. We present the case of a healthy 25-year-old male. After an emergency surgery, a whole surgical pad was left inside his abdomen, which eroded its bowel wall and migrated i

Migrated Plastic Biliary Stent Causing Cecal Perforation.

Plastic biliary stents can spontaneously dislodge from the common bile duct and migrate distally into the bowels. Most migrated plastic biliary stents get passed with stools without any complication. However, in rare cases, migrated biliary stents can cause bowel perforation requiring urgent intervention. We report a rare case of a 53-year-old woman presenting with severe lower abdominal pain secondary to migrated plastic biliary stent causing cecal perforation. Computed tomography revealed a radiopaque linear foreign body within the cecum. The patient underwent emergent laparoscopy with stent

An ingested metallic wire migrating from stomach to pancreas treated by laparoscopic surgery: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Foreign bodies inside the pancreas are rare and usually occur after the ingestion of sharp objects such as a fish bone, a sewing needle, or a toothpick. Furthermore, an ingested metallic wire migrating from stomach to pancreas is very rare. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 36-year-old woman who was admitted to our hospital with "3-day history of dull progressive epigastric pain." Computed tomography of the abdomen revealed a linear, high-density body between the stomach wall and the pancreas. During the operation, a linear, hard, metallic wire was found in the adhesive tissue betw

Sutured sulcus fixation of an anteriorly dislocated endocapsular intraocular lens.

Endocapsular intraocular lens (IOL) dislocation can be a challenge for the anterior segment surgeon. We describe a novel surgical strategy for repositioning an anteriorly dislocated endocapsular IOL by suturing it to the ciliary sulcus using an anterior segment approach in a patient with retinitis pigmentosa (RP).

Hitting the Nail on the Head: A Laparoscopic Retrieval of a Metallic Intrahepatic Foreign Body.

The presence of foreign bodies within the liver is an exceedingly rare event, typically resulting from either direct penetrating trauma to the abdomen or migration from the gastrointestinal tract. This report presents a case of a 21-year-old male, carpenter by occupation, who experienced accidental penetrating thoraco-abdominal trauma, leading to the retention of a metallic nail within the liver. The diagnosis was established based on conventional X-ray and CT scan findings; the nail was successfully retrieved via laparoscopy. This case underscores the significance of prompt diagnosis and inte

[Foreign body in the urinary bladder intrauterine device].

The article provides a rare observation of a 34-year-old woman who, 12 years before admission to a urological clinic, a gynecologist installed an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD). The subject migrated into the abdominal cavity, and after 10 years the patient developed dysuria and hematuria. In October 2017, ultrasound and cystoscopy revealed the migration of IUD into the bladder. A foreign body was removed from the bladder - an IUD of a T-shape with the formation of a stone on it with a maximum size of 4.5 cm. During a follow-up examination after 2 years, pathology was not established.

Retained wooden splinter migrated within a digital flexor tendon sheath: Ultrasonographic diagnosis for presurgical planning.

A 29-year-old right-handed woman presented to an outside emergency department with right small finger pain, swelling, and concern for a retained wooden splinter. Diagnosis and treatment were delayed for 2 weeks due to the inability to identify the foreign body clinically or radiographically. Ultimately, ultrasonography by a fellowship-trained specialist was used to localize the wooden splinter. It was embedded within the flexor tendon sheath but had migrated away from its initial point of entry. The patient underwent subsequent surgical extraction, irrigation, and debridement. Two weeks follow

Innovative surgical technique for removal of Light Emitting Diode from segmental bronchus in a child: After the failure of endoscopic retrieval.

A five years boy aspirated Light-emitting diode (LED) of a toy while playing. Initially, he had a cough which later on settled. Chest physician at the local hospital tried to retrieve foreign bodies endoscopically, but he failed. He was referred to our tertiary care hospital. Chest physician and pediatric ear, nose and throat surgeon (ENT) were unable to remove it endoscopically as the (LED) migrated further into posterior basal segmental bronchus with manipulation. We removed this foreign body with our innovative lung parachymal sparing surgical technique without compromising the airway integ

Female Adolescent Presenting With Abdominal Pain: Accidental Wire Bristle Ingestion Leading to Colonic Perforation.

INTRODUCTION: Abdominal pain in female adolescents is a common presentation to both the emergency department and the outpatient pediatric clinic. The broad differential diagnosis for abdominal pain requires a high index of suspicion to make an accurate diagnosis of foreign body ingestion as the etiology. Foreign body ingestion occurs in all age groups, but sequelae of gastrointestinal tract perforation in children are rare. Treatment for perforation requires consultation of the pediatric general surgeon. Clinicians should take care to not overlook subtle imaging findings or dietary/exposure hi

Intrauterine Tampon Identified on CT as an Intrauterine Foreign Body Associated With Bilateral Leg Edema: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Foreign bodies retained within the vaginal canal are relatively common in gynecological practice, particularly forgotten vaginal tampons, which are well known to cause localized pelvic infection and life-threatening toxic shock syndrome. However, the transcervical intrauterine migration and retention of a tampon is exceptionally rare, as the cervical canal typically acts as a robust mechanical barrier. CASE PRESENTATION: I report the case of a 32-year-old multiparous woman presenting with lower abdominal pain and acute bilateral leg edema. Due to the presence of systemic edema, co

Chronic abdominal pain secondary to mesh erosion into cecum following incisional hernia repair: a case report and literature review.

Incisional hernias following abdominal operations are a common complication. Mesh is frequently employed to repair these hernias. Given the popularity of minimally invasive surgery utilizing polypropylene mesh for incisional hernia repair, related complications such postoperative hematoma and seroma, foreign body reaction, organ injury, infection, mesh rejection, and fistula are being noted. Mesh migration is an infrequent occurrence, and is rarely reported in the literature. Those that are usually involve the urinary bladder. In particular, review of literature shows no reports of cases of me

Case Report: Hemoptysis secondary to fish bone migration into the lung parenchyma.

Hemoptysis caused by transmural migration of ingested fish bones into lung parenchyma is exceptionally rare. A 71-years-old diabetic woman presented with 20-days recurrent hemoptysis, exacerbated in supine position. Three months prior, she experienced fish bone impaction with negative laryngoscopy. On re-presentation, contrast-enhanced CT revealed a foreign body embedded in the right upper lobe surrounded by an inflammatory pseudotumor. Thoracoscopic wedge resection confirmed a fish bone intraparenchymal migration with suppurative abscess. The patient recovered uneventfully and remained asympt

Laparoscopic Removal of a Retroperitoneal Hysteroscopic Microinsert Using Fluoroscopy.

Perforation during placement of hysteroscopic microinserts for permanent sterilization occurs in approximately .9% to 2.6% of women undergoing the procedure. Most of the time perforation results in intraperitoneal placement of the hysteroscopic microinsert requiring laparoscopy or laparotomy for removal of the device. Herein we present a case of hysteroscopic microinsert perforation with subsequent retroperitoneal identification of the device. This is the first such case to our knowledge of retroperitoneal identification and retrieval of a perforated device that required real-time fluoroscopy

Surgical clip migration in the biliary tract.

Surgical clip migration in the biliary tract is uncommon and the diagnosis is still challenging, which may affect the treatment of these scenarios. We report three cases of surgical clip migration in the biliary tract that occurred in our clinical practice. Three female adults were diagnosed with dilation of the common bile duct (CBD), surgical clip migration in the biliary tract and the tumour of CBD, respectively. All of them had a history of hepatobiliary surgery. All of them were diagnosed with surgical clip migration in the biliary tract before surgery and underwent surgery and the migrat

Accidental Entry of Ointment in Anterior Chamber Postcataract Surgery: A Clinical Conundrum.

Postoperative complications of cataract surgery are uncommon, and accidental entry of topical ointment into the anterior chamber is a particularly rare event. We report the case of a 67-year-old male with bilateral cataracts and old macular scar in the right eye asteroid hyalosis in the left eye, who developed intraocular migration of 6% sodium chloride ointment following uncomplicated small-incision cataract surgery. On postoperative day 1, a whitish, semi-solid, free-floating material was observed in the anterior chamber, accompanied by mild corneal edema and 1+ anterior chamber cells (SUN c

Migration of Spinal Hardware Into the Popliteal Vein: A Case Report.

CASE: A 41-year-old woman with prior T12-L4 instrumentation for adolescent lumbar scoliosis presented with left posteromedial thigh pain initially diagnosed as an adductor strain. Two years later, she re-presented with knee stiffness, lower leg mottling, and paresthesia suspected to be reflex sympathetic dystrophy. Radiographs later revealed a 13.6-cm radiopaque object in the popliteal fossa and rod absence from the lumbar spine. The spinal rod was removed from the popliteal vein by orthopaedic surgery. CONCLUSION: Radiographs are an easily obtained, low-cost, and high-yield resource that are
