Femoral shaft fracture (FSF) is a common fracture in orthopedic practice. Closed reduction and intramedullary nailing, due to their minimally invasive nature and ability to promote fracture healing, have become the mainstream treatment for FSF. However, accurately assessing and correcting rotational deformities during surgery remains a major challenge for this technique. This article reviews the research progress on the assessment and correction of rotational deformities in closed reduction and intramedullary nailing of FSF. Current assessment methods involve the wire-drawing method, femoral n

Surgical treatment of calcaneal fractures is associated with a high incidence of postoperative wound infections, ranging from 7% to 25%. Their treatment is a real challenge in orthopedic surgery. Herein, we present a rare case of a polymicrobial surgical site infection involving the anaerobic species Peptoniphilus olsenii in a 59-year-old male. The infection was treated in multiple stages by aggressive surgical debridement together with filling the formed calcaneal cavity with bioactive glass, silver-impregnated dressing, vacuum-assisted closure, skin grafting, and targeted antibiotic therapy.

Postoperative infections with multidrug-resistant (MDR) Acinetobacter baumannii present significant challenges in orthopedic surgery. This case report highlights the management and successful treatment of an MDR Acinetobacter infection following open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of a right acetabulum fracture. A 51-year-old male presented with a comminuted right acetabular fracture following a motor vehicle accident. Initial ORIF was complicated by intraoperative blood loss, necessitating early termination of the procedure. The patient subsequently developed a deep surgical site infe

Thyroid storm is a life-threatening condition in which patients with untreated or poorly controlled thyroid disease experience excessive thyroid hormone action triggered by severe stress, resulting in multiple organ dysfunction. We present a case of suspected thyroid storm during surgery for a left mandibular fracture under general anesthesia. The patient was a 23-year-old male, and a preoperative interview revealed no notable medical history. During open reduction and internal fixation under general anesthesia, the patient developed sinus tachycardia, hypertension, elevated end-tidal carbon d

BACKGROUND: Poorly controlled postoperative pain results in prolonged length of stay (LOS). The use of liposome bupivacaine injectable suspension (LB) for postoperative pain control is a relatively recent practice.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the following. In patients undergoing open reduction and internal fixation of mandibular fracture(s), does the use of LB reduce LOS compared with regular bupivacaine?
STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, SAMPLE: We implemented a retrospective cohort study of consecutive patients with mandibular fracture(s) presented to Grady Memorial Hospita

Alveolar fractures are a common type of maxillofacial trauma, and the conventional treatment involves closed reduction and dental splinting fixation. However, closed treatment is not suitable for some complex segmental alveolar fractures. In this case report, we introduce an innovative method for segmental alveolar fracture by using open reduction and internal fixation by minimally invasive approach combined with computer-assisted surgery. In this case, the new dimensions in the treatment followed AO principles of fracture management, achieving anatomical reduction of the fracture, absolute st

Radiocarpal dislocation is an uncommon injury that is usually caused by high-energy trauma. Herein, we present two cases of dorsal radiocarpal dislocation with radial styloid fractures that were treated by arthroscopy-assisted reduction and internal fixation. Wrist arthroscopy provides accurate information on intra-articular fractures and carpal and/or intracarpal ligamentous tears of the radiocarpal joint. Furthermore, the procedure enables simultaneous anatomical reduction of intra-articular fractures and radiocarpal and/or intercarpal ligament repair. Arthroscopy-assisted reduction and inte

BACKGROUND: Femoral neck fractures (FNF) are one of the most common fractures, with a projected increase in incidence with population growth and ageing. The Femoral Neck System (FNS) launched in 2019 was developed specifically for fixation of FNF with the purported advantages of providing both angular and rotational stability. We report our experience with the FNS and evaluate its effectiveness and associated complications.
METHODS: A retrospective case series of 50 patients who underwent surgical fixation for FNF from August 2020 to October 2021 using the FNS in two Singapore tertiary instit

In this case report, we want to show how a patient who underwent surgery for a distal humerus fracture developed postoperative ulnar neuropathy symptoms, how nonunion persisted even at the ninth month of follow-up, and whether the nonunion was connected to the ulnar neuropathy that developed. Due to this, we used this case to explore ulnar nerve care and whether ulnar nerve transposition, manipulation, or decompression should be carried out during surgery on patients with distal humerus fractures. A 52-year-old man with a bi-columnar distal humerus fracture from a fall on his right elbow under

INTRODUCTION: Rib fractures are a common presentation in both patients presenting with high impact poly-trauma and as a result of low energy falls in the elderly. This injury can lead to various complications including prolonged hospital admission, pneumonia, need for ventilation and in admission to intensive care unit. There is much controversy around the management of this injury in the literature, with favourable outcomes for patients treated non-operatively as well as surgically.
METHODS: We collated a database for all rib fracture fixations between 2014 and 2019 that took place at the ma

INTRODUCTION: Osteopetrosis is a heritable disease characterized by the dysfunction of osteoclasts, resulting in decreased bone resorption and increased bone density. Fractures are a common complication of osteopetrosis, which are challenging for orthopedic surgeons to treat because the condition renders canal reaming and screw placement difficult.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data of patients with osteopetrosis from 2011 to 2019, which were available from an electronic medical database, were retrospectively analyzed. Inclusion criteria were patients with osteopetrosis having subtrochanteric fractu
