The scientific body of knowledge - Whose body does it serve? A spotlight on oral contraceptives and women's health factors in neuroimaging.

Women constitute half of the world's population, yet neuroscience research does not serve the sexes equally. Fifty years of preclinical animal evidence documents the tightly-coupled relationship between our endocrine and nervous systems, yet human neuroimaging studies rarely consider how endocrine factors shape the structural and functional architecture of the human brain. Here, we quantify several blind spots in neuroimaging research, which overlooks aspects of the human condition that impact women's health (e.g. the menstrual cycle, hormonal contraceptives, pregnancy, menopause). Next, we il

Neuroimaging Correlates of the NIH-Toolbox-Driven Cognitive Metrics in Children.

BACKGROUND: The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Toolbox Cognition Battery is increasingly being used as a standardized test to examine cognitive functioning in multicentric studies. This study examines the associations between the NIH Toolbox Cognition Battery composite scores with neuroimaging metrics using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study to elucidate the neurobiological and neuroanatomical correlates of these cognitive scores. METHODS: Neuroimaging data from 5290 children (mean age 9.9 years) were analyzed, assessing the correlation of the composite sco

Proposed neuroimaging criteria for the diagnosis of multiple system atrophy.

In this article, we review the state of the art knowledge concerning structural and functional imaging in multiple system atrophy (MSA). The relative value of imaging modalities in the differential diagnosis of MSA from other parkinsonian syndromes is debated. It is concluded that, although neuroimaging biomarkers provide valuable supportive data alongside clinical assessments, it is not possible to use them as surrogate markers.

Functional imaging of the visual pathways.

Functional neuroimaging has provided a new view of activity in human visual cortex. There have been a series of interesting developments in understanding the relationship between the functional signals, particularly functional MRI, and basic measurements of action potentials and local field potentials. The new human neuro-imaging measurements have clarified some of the similarities and differences between the general organization of visual areas in human and macaque visual cortex, and there have been some interesting new results concerning cortical visual plasticity and dysfunction. The new fM…

Group-specific discriminant analysis enhances detection of sex differences in brain functional network lateralization.

BACKGROUND: Lateralization is the asymmetry in function and cognition between the brain hemispheres, with notable sex differences. Conventional neuroscience studies on lateralization use univariate statistical comparisons between male and female groups, with limited and ineffective validation for group specificity. This article proposes to model sex differences in brain functional network lateralization as a dual-classification problem: first-order classification of left versus right hemispheres and second-order classification of male versus female models. To capture sex-specific patterns, we

Resting-State fMRI Metrics in Acute Sport-Related Concussion and Their Association with Clinical Recovery: A Study from the NCAA-DOD CARE Consortium.

There has been a recent call for longitudinal cohort studies to track the physiological recovery of sport-related concussion (SRC) and its relationship with clinical recovery. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) has shown potential for detecting subtle changes in brain function after SRC. We investigated the effects of SRC on rs-fMRI metrics assessing local connectivity (regional homogeneity; REHO), global connectivity (average nodal strength), and the relative amplitude of slow oscillations of rs-fMRI (fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations; fALFF). Machine learning: assessing neurovascular signals in the prefrontal cortex with non-invasive bimodal electro-optical neuroimaging in opiate addiction.

Chronic and recurrent opiate use injuries brain tissue and cause serious pathophysiological changes in hemodynamic and subsequent inflammatory responses. Prefrontal cortex (PFC) has been implicated in drug addiction. However, the mechanism underlying systems-level neuroadaptations in PFC during abstinence has not been fully characterized. The objective of our study was to determine what neural oscillatory activity contributes to the chronic effect of opiate exposure and whether the activity could be coupled to neurovascular information in the PFC. We employed resting-state functional connectiv

Anosognosia for hemiplegia as a tripartite disconnection syndrome.

The syndrome of Anosognosia for Hemiplegia (AHP) can provide unique insights into the neurocognitive processes of motor awareness. Yet, prior studies have only explored predominately discreet lesions. Using advanced structural neuroimaging methods in 174 patients with a right-hemisphere stroke, we were able to identify three neural systems that contribute to AHP, when disconnected or directly damaged: the (i) premotor loop (ii) limbic system, and (iii) ventral attentional network. Our results suggest that human motor awareness is contingent on the joint contribution of these three systems.

Neurophysiological correlates of the attention training technique: A component study.

In the current study, we investigate the neuronal correlates of the Attention Training Technique (ATT), a psychotherapeutic intervention used in metacognitive therapy to enhance flexible cognitive control and ameliorate rumination. We adapted the ATT in a neuroscientific attention paradigm in order to investigate the effects of its components: selective attention, attention switching and divided attention in comparison to a control task. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy was used to measure changes in blood oxygenation of fronto-lateral and parietal cortical areas. Furthermore, subjects ra

Neurococognitive and neuroimaging correlates of obesity and components of metabolic syndrome in bipolar disorder: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) have a higher prevalence of obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) compared with the general population. Obesity and MetS are associated with cognitive deficits and brain imaging abnormalities in the general population. Obesity and components of MetS might potentially associate with neuroimaging and neurocognitive findings in BD. METHODS: A literature search of studies investigating the association between obesity (and other components of MetS) and neurocognitive and neuroimaging findings in BD was conducted. In addition to a systematic review

Multistable Perception and the Role of the Frontoparietal Cortex in Perceptual Inference.

A given pattern of optical stimulation can arise from countless possible real-world sources, creating a dilemma for vision: What in the world actually gives rise to the current pattern? This dilemma was pointed out centuries ago by the astronomer and mathematician Ibn Al-Haytham and was forcefully restated 150 years ago when von Helmholtz characterized perception as unconscious inference. To buttress his contention, von Helmholtz cited multistable perception: recurring changes in perception despite unchanging sensory input. Recent neuroscientific studies have exploited multistable perception t

Network dynamics in dyslexia: Review and implications for remediation.

Extant neurobiological theories of dyslexia appear fractional in focusing on isolated brain regions, mechanisms, and functional pathways. A synthesis of current research shows support for an Interactive Specialization (IS) model of dyslexia involving the dysfunctional orchestration of a widely-distributed, attentionally-controlled, hierarchical, and interhemispheric circuit of intercommunicating neuronal networks. This circuitry is comprised principally of the frontostriatal-parietal cognitive control system of networks, the posterior corpus callosum, and the left arcuate fasciculus. During de

Reduced cannabinoid CB1 receptor binding in alcohol dependence measured with positron emission tomography.

Brain cannabinoid CB1 receptors contribute to alcohol-related behaviors in experimental animals, but their potential role in humans with alcohol dependence is poorly understood. We measured CB1 receptors in alcohol dependent patients in early and protracted abstinence, and in comparison with control subjects without alcohol use disorders, using positron emission tomography and [(18)F]FMPEP-d2, a radioligand for CB1 receptors. We scanned 18 male in-patients with alcohol dependence twice, within 3-7 days of admission from ongoing drinking, and after 2-4 weeks of supervised abstinence. Imaging da

A functional near-infrared spectroscopy study of lexical decision task supports the dual route model and the phonological deficit theory of dyslexia.

The dual route model (DRM) of reading suggests two routes of reading development: the phonological and the orthographic routes. It was proposed that although the two routes are active in the process of reading; the first is more involved at the initial stages of reading acquisition, whereas the latter needs more reading training to mature. A number of studies have shown that deficient phonological processing is a core deficit in developmental dyslexia. According to the DRM, when the Lexical Decision Task (LDT) is performed, the orthographic route should also be involved when decoding words, wh

Insight into management of dementias from neuroimaging.

Structural and functional neuroimagings are the most powerful tools for differential diagnosis and early diagnosis of dementia. Besides clinical use, they also contribute to neuroscience and to testing efficacy as surrogate measures in clinical trial. This paper, focusing on two different models beyond the therapeutic nihilism, discusses the roles of neuroimaging in relation to treatment of dementias; 1) treatable "incurable dementia" - Alzheimer's disease (AD) and 2) untreated "curable dementia" - idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (INPH).

Fatigue in Neurological Rehabilitation: Why Brain Diversity and Population Diversity Matter.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue affects 50% to 90% of patients with multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, stroke, ME/CFS, and long COVID and represents a primary barrier to rehabilitation participation yet remains poorly understood despite decades of research. THE PROBLEM: Systematic examination of recent comprehensive reviews reveals a dual diversity failure. Brain diversity is underexamined: fatigue, fundamentally a central nervous system symptom, is assessed predominantly through questionnaires (95%-100% of studies) and peripheral biomarkers, while functional neuroimaging appears in fewer than 15% …

Neuro_DeFused-Net: A novel multi-scale 2DCNN architecture assisted diagnostic model for Parkinson's disease diagnosis using deep feature-level fusion of multi-site multi-modality neuroimaging data.

BACKGROUND: Neurological disorders, particularly Parkinson's Disease (PD), are serious and progressive conditions that significantly impact patients' motor functions and overall quality of life. Accurate and timely diagnosis is still crucial, but it is quite challenging. Understanding the changes in the brain linked to PD requires using neuroimaging modalities like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly deep learning (DL) methods, can potentially improve the precision of diagnosis. METHOD: In the current study, we present a novel approach that integrates

Deriving Mendelian Randomization-Based Causal Networks of Brain Imaging Phenotypes and Bipolar Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Neuroanatomical variation in individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) has been described previously in observational studies. However, the causal dynamics of these relationships remain unexplored. METHODS: We performed Mendelian randomization (MR) of 297 structural and functional neuroimaging phenotypes from the UK Biobank and BD using genome-wide association study summary statistics. We carried out a suite of sensitivity analyses and identified phenotypic categories with the greatest effect on BD. We applied a novel inverse sparse regression model that accounts for covariance betwe…

Neurocognitive effects of psilocybin: A systematic and comprehensive review of neuroimaging studies in humans.

Psilocybin is a psychedelic serotonergic compound that is renowned for its potent psychoactive effects. Over the past 15 years, an increasing number of controlled clinical trials showed that it has a fast-acting and sustainable efficacy in treating various psychiatric disorders. Neuroimaging studies have been conducted with the objective of elucidating the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the subjective and therapeutic effects of psilocybin. However, the diversity of neuroimaging techniques, tasks, and analytical approaches makes it difficult to gain a comprehensive overview of psilocybin
