Insights into oral microbiome and colorectal cancer - on the way of searching new perspectives.

Microbiome is a keystone polymicrobial community that coexist with human body in a beneficial relationship. These microorganisms enable the human body to maintain homeostasis and take part in mechanisms of defense against infection and in the absorption of nutrients. Even though microbiome is involved in physiologic processes that are beneficial to host health, it may also cause serious detrimental issues. Additionally, it has been proven that bacteria can migrate to other human body compartments and colonize them even although significant structural differences with the area of origin exist.

Effects of Hepatitis C Virus Elimination by Direct-Acting Antiviral Agents on the Occurrence of Oral Lichen Planus and Periodontal Pathogen Load: A Preliminary Report.

OBJECTIVE: The association between hepatitis C virus (HCV) and oral lichen planus (OLP) is well known, but the association with periodontal disease has been reported less often. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of periodontal bacteria and OLP lesions before and after HCV elimination. Subjects and Methods. The subjects were four OLP patients (mean age 72.5 years) with HCV infection. Six types of periodontal bacteria (Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Prevotella intermedia, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, Treponema denticola, and Fusobacterium nucleat

Gingival Epithelial Cell Recognition of Lipopolysaccharide.

Gingival epithelium plays a pivotal role in protecting the underlying periodontium from the microbial colonization found in the gingival sulcus. Having an appropriate phenotype displayed by gingival epithelial cells is a critical host component required for protection against bacterial invasion into gingival tissues. In the present study, gingival epithelial homeostasis associated with the CXCL-8/IL-8 chemokine response was investigated in vitro to determine the mechanisms that gingival epithelial cells utilize for sensing gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms. The findings of this st

The microbiological signature of human cutaneous leishmaniasis lesions exhibits restricted bacterial diversity compared to healthy skin.

Localised cutaneous leishmaniasis (LCL) is the most common form of cutaneous leishmaniasis characterised by single or multiple painless chronic ulcers, which commonly presents with secondary bacterial infection. Previous culture-based studies have found staphylococci, streptococci, and opportunistic pathogenic bacteria in LCL lesions, but there have been no comparisons to normal skin. In addition, this approach has strong bias for determining bacterial composition. The present study tested the hypothesis that bacterial communities in LCL lesions differ from those found on healthy skin (HS). Us

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori-negative gastric cancer (GC) occurs in individuals with specific risk factors. This narrative review will evaluate the role of non-H. pylori gastric microbiota in gastric carcinogenesis and summarize the clinical aspects of non-H. pylori-related GC. SUMMARY: Epstein-Barr virus is the only other infection conclusively proven to be causative of GC. Case-control studies have reported a dysbiotic GC-associated gastric microbiome, with greater abundance of Fusobacterium nucleatum, Streptococcus anginosus, Prevotella, and Veillonella. Mice model mechanistic studies h

Lemierre's syndrome associated-diabetic ketoacidosis in an elderly female: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The co-occurrence of Lemierre's syndrome, primarily triggered by Fusobacterium necrophorum following oropharyngeal infection, with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in diabetes mellitus (DM) patients, underscores a rare but life-threatening clinical scenario. Lemierre's syndrome induced DKA is extremely rare, with only one case report in adult and no case yet reported in elderly. CASE PRESENTATION: We reported a case of a 69-year-old female who presented with DKA triggered by deep neck space infection (DNSI), leading to rapid clinical deterioration within 6 h that necessitated high flow

Antibiotics for inflammatory bowel disease: Current status.

There is abundant literature reporting about the use of antibiotics in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), but their role in the management of IBD is not entirely clear. Diverse infectious organisms have been implicated in the pathogenesis of Crohn's disease. Also, infections are believed to be a trigger for flares of ulcerative colitis. The benefit of the routine use of antibiotics in IBD is equivocal. However, there are certain situations, where antibiotics have a clear role and evidence of benefit: perianal fistula, intra-abdominal abscesses in Crohn's disease, acute pouchitis and infection-r

Some morphological, biochemical and immunological blood parameters in European bison with or without lesions in the digestive, respiratory, urinary and reproductive tracts.

Ninety-seven bison (39 males and 58 females) were culled out during three successive winter seasons. No infection with BHV-1 and BHV-5 or other viruses was detected by PCR and SN methods. Advanced pathological lesions observed in males exhibiting symptoms of posthitis/balanoposthitis are probably due to secondary infection by microorganisms present in the prepuce (Corynebacterium spp., Bacillus spp., Fusobacterium necrophorum, Staphylococcus spp. (coagulase negative) and Staphylococcus hyicus). Histopathological examinations of sections from prepuce and lips of pudendum showed the presence of

Tunneled Pleural Catheters for Patients With Chronic Pleural Infection and Nonexpandable Lung.

Chronic pleural infection is characterized by thickened pleura and nonexpandable lung often requiring definitive surgical intervention, such as decortication and/or pleural obliteration procedures. Such procedures are associated with significant morbidity and require proper patient selection for a successful outcome. We report a cohort of 11 patients with pleural space infection and a nonexpandable lung treated with tunneled pleural catheters (TPCs). Following placement, hospital discharge and TPC removal occurred after a median of 5 and 36 days, respectively. Three patients presented with res

Metagenomic profiling of viral and microbial communities from the pox lesions of lumpy skin disease virus and sheeppox virus-infected hosts.

INTRODUCTION: It has been recognized that capripoxvirus infections have a strong cutaneous tropism with the manifestation of skin lesions in the form of nodules and scabs in the respective hosts, followed by necrosis and sloughing off. Considering that the skin microbiota is a complex community of commensal bacteria, fungi and viruses that are influenced by infections leading to pathological states, there is no evidence on how the skin microbiome is affected during capripoxvirus pathogenesis. METHODS: In this study, shotgun metagenomic sequencing was used to investigate the microbiome in pox

Differential gene expression profile in Porphyromonas gingivalis treated human gingival keratinocytes and their role in the development of HNSCC.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is considered to be one of the major risk factors associated with cancers of the oral cavity. Periodontogenic pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, Tannerella forsythia, Fusobacterium nucleatum and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans are the important pathogens associated with periodontitis. Chronic exposure to bacterial components induces changes in the nearby cells. Hence, the present study has been designed to identify the molecular mechanisms that could be associated with the two disease conditions viz., periodontitis and head and neck

Expression of the SARS-CoV-2 Receptor ACE2 and Proinflammatory Cytokines Induced by the Periodontopathic Bacterium Fusobacterium nucleatum in Human Respiratory Epithelial Cells.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is currently a global public health emergency. Periodontitis, the most prevalent disease that leads to tooth loss, is caused by infection by periodontopathic bacteria. Periodontitis is also a risk factor for pneumonia and the exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, presumably because of the aspiration of saliva contaminated with periodontopathic bacteria into the lower respiratory tract. Patients with these diseases have increased rates of COVID-19 aggravation and mortali

Low rate of co-infection in complicated infectious mononucleosis.

INTRODUCTION: It remains unclarified if bacterial co-infection is common in patients with infectious mononucleosis (IM) and acute tonsillitis and/or peritonsillar abscess (PTA). Recent studies suggest that Fusobacterium necrophorum is a prevalent pathogen in acute tonsillitis and PTA. We hypothesised that this anaerobe may play a significant role for the aggravated infection and the development of PTA among teenagers and young adults with IM. METHODS: All patients with IM and clinical findings of acute tonsillitis or PTA admitted to our department in the 2001-2015 period were included in the

Fusobacterium nucleatum GroEL induces risk factors of atherosclerosis in human microvascular endothelial cells and ApoE(-/-) mice.

Infection and inflammation are risk factors in the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis. Periodontitis is one of the most prevalent chronic inflammations of the oral cavity, and has been reported to be associated with systemic disease. In this study, we evaluated whether the heat-shock protein GroEL of Fusobacterium nucleatum, one of the most prevalent bacteria in periodontitis, induces factors that predispose to atherosclerosis in human microvascular endothelial cells (HMEC-1) and apolipoprotein E-deficient (ApoE(-/-)) mice. GroEL induced the expression of chemokines such as monocyte

Fusobacterium nucleatum inhibits human T-cell activation by arresting cells in the mid-G1 phase of the cell cycle.

Fusobacterium nucleatum has been implicated in the pathogenesis of several diseases, including urinary tract infections, bacteremia, pericarditis, otitis media, and disorders of the oral cavity such as pulpal infections, alveolar bone abscesses, and periodontal disease. We have previously demonstrated that sonic extracts of F. nucleatum FDC 364 were capable of inhibiting human T-cell responses to mitogens and antigens. In this study, we have further characterized this immunosuppressive protein (FIP) and initiated experiments to determine its mode of action. The purified FIP has an apparent mol
