Amygdala volume changes in posttraumatic stress disorder in a large case-controlled veterans group.

CONTEXT: Smaller hippocampal volumes are well established in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but the relatively few studies of amygdala volume in PTSD have produced equivocal results. OBJECTIVE: To assess a large cohort of recent military veterans with PTSD and trauma-exposed control subjects, with sufficient power to perform a definitive assessment of the effect of PTSD on volumetric changes in the amygdala and hippocampus and of the contribution of illness duration, trauma load, and depressive symptoms. DESIGN: Case-controlled design with structural magnetic resonance imaging and cli

Specific mutations of basal core promoter are associated with chronic liver disease in hepatitis B virus subgenotype D1 prevalent in Turkey.

The role of hepatitis B virus (HBV) genetics in the clinical manifestations of infection is being increasingly recognized. Genotype D is one of eight currently recognized major HBV genotypes. The virus is ubiquitous worldwide, but shows different features in different regions. One hundred and ninety-eight patients with chronic HBV infection were enrolled in this study, 38 of whom had been diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver and/or hepatocellular carcinoma. HBV DNA was isolated from the patients' blood samples and the entire genome and/or the basal core promoter/core promoter region sequenced

The effects of hypermuscularity on shoulder morphology in myostatin-deficient mice.

Mechanical loads, particularly those generated by skeletal muscle, play a significant role in determining long-bone shape and strength, but it is less clear how these loads influence the morphology of flat bones like the scapula. While scapular morphology has been shown to vary with locomotor mode in mammals, this study seeks to better understand whether genetically modified muscle size can influence scapular shape in the absence of significant locomotor differences. The soft- and hard-tissue morphological characteristics were examined in 11 hypermuscular, mutant (myostatin-deficient), 20 hete

Genetic control of ethanol action on the central nervous system. An EEG study in twins.

The purpose of the investigation is to claify the genetic contribution to the interindividual variability of ethanol action on the central nervous system. The 52 adult male healthy twin pairs (26 MZ, 26 DZ) got 1.2 ml/kg ethanol p.o. under standardized conditions; furthermore, 13 non-twin subjects were repeatedly subjected to the same procedure in order to test the intraindividual variability. The EEG was recorded before and 60, 120, 180, and 240 min after alcohol intake. The EEGs were off-line analyzed by means of a computer program for time domain analysis. As was already known, on the avera

Breakthrough Biomarkers in Lung Cancer: Pioneering Early Detection and Precision Treatment Strategies.

There are several biological, genetic, and environmental variables that contribute to lung cancer, which is one of the main causes of cancer-related death globally. In addition to exposure to radon gas, air pollution, and occupational dangers like asbestos, smoking is a major risk factor because it releases carcinogens like nitrosamines and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) into the lungs. The risk of developing lung cancer is also influenced by genetic predispositions, such as variations in genes like EGFR, KRAS, and TP53. Additionally, new research emphasises how epigenetic changes, su

Genetic diversity of hepatitis B virus quasispecies in different biological compartments reveals distinct genotypes.

The selection pressure imposed by the host immune system impacts hepatitis B virus (HBV) quasispecies variability. This study evaluates HBV genetic diversity in different biological fluids. Twenty paired serum, oral fluid, and DBS samples from chronic HBV carriers were analyzed using both Sanger and next generation sequencing (NGS). The mean HBV viral load in serum was 5.19 ± 4.3 log IU/mL (median 5.29, IQR 3.01-7.93). Genotype distribution was: HBV/A1 55% (11/20), A2 15% (3/20), D3 10% (2/20), F2 15% (3/20), and F4 5% (1/20). Genotype agreement between serum and oral fluid was 100% (genetic d

Genomic Characterization and gE/gI-Deleted Strain Construction of Novel PRV Variants Isolated in Central China.

Pseudorabies virus (PRV) variants have caused substantial economic losses in the swine industry in China since 2011. To surveil the genetic variation in PRV field strains, here, two novel variant strains of PRV were isolated from Shanxi Province in central China and were designated SX1910 and SX1911. To identify the genetic characteristics of the two isolates, their complete genomes were sequenced, and phylogenetic analysis and sequence alignment revealed that field PRV variants have undergone genetic variations; notably, the protein-coding sequences UL5, UL36, US1 and IE180 exhibited extensiv

Social, Epidemiological, and Virological Characteristics from Peruvian Subjects Living with HIV-1/AIDS with Different Sexual Risk Behavior.

HIV-1 genetic diversity and resistance profile might change according to the risky sexual behavior of the host. To show this, we recruited 134 individuals between the years 2015 and 2017 identified as transgender women sex workers (TWSW, n = 73) and Heterosexual Military Officers (HET-MO, n = 61). After obtaining informed consent, we collected a blood sample to perform the HIV genotyping, CD4 cell count, and viral load. We used bioinformatics approaches for detecting resistance mutations and recombination events. Epidemiological data showed that both groups reported sexually transmitted diseas

Multiplex melanoma families are enriched for polygenic risk.

Cancers, including cutaneous melanoma, can cluster in families. In addition to environmental etiological factors such as ultraviolet radiation, cutaneous melanoma has a strong genetic component. Genetic risks for cutaneous melanoma range from rare, high-penetrance mutations to common, low-penetrance variants. Known high-penetrance mutations account for only about half of all densely affected cutaneous melanoma families, and the causes of familial clustering in the remainder are unknown. We hypothesize that some clustering is due to the cumulative effect of a large number of variants of individ

Genetic diversity of Pneumocystis jirovecii in colonized Cuban infants and toddlers.

Pneumocystis jirovecii is a leading cause of opportunistic infections among immunocompromised patients. The aim of this study was to determine the genetic diversity of P. jirovecii from colonized Cuban infants and toddlers by analysis of four genetic loci: mitochondrial large subunit (mtLSU) rRNA, cytochrome b (CYB), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and β-tubulin (β-tub). We determined the multilocus profiles based on concatenated genotype data (multilocus genotype; MLG) and nucleotide sequences (multilocus sequence analysis; MLSA) respectively, calculated the discriminatory power of each analysis,

Association of genetic polymorphisms with interferon-induced haematologic adverse effects in chronic hepatitis C patients.

Interferon (IFN)-based combination therapy with ribavirin has become the gold standard for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus infection. Haematologic toxicities, such as neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, and anaemia, however, frequently cause poor treatment tolerance, resulting in poor therapeutic efficacy. The aim of this study was to identify host genetic polymorphisms associated with the efficacy or haematologic toxicity of IFN-based combination therapy in chronic hepatitis C patients. We performed comprehensive single nucleotide polymorphism detection in all exonic regions of the 12 g

Genetic analysis of cover test measures and AC/A ratio in human populations with varying incidences of strabismus.

The genetic analyses of indices relating to distance alignment and accommodative convergence are presented. This approach is important in understanding the contribution of genetic factors to observed individual differences for these measures. Abnormalities of either of these two components results in a tendency towards either a convergent or divergent position of the eyes (relative to the position of fusional demand) and thus places an additional load or strain on the other components of the binocular mechanism which must compensate for this potential disruption. If compensation is inadequate

Astragalus polysaccharides reshape gut resistome of postpartum dairy cows.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in livestock feces represent an important environmental reservoir of antimicrobial resistance. Natural product intervention is a potential strategy for regulating the gut microbiome of livestock; however, its effects on the gut resistome of postpartum dairy cows remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of Astragalus polysaccharides (APS) supplementation on the fecal microbiome, ARGs, mobile genetic elements (MGEs), virulence factors (VFs), and ARG-carrying metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) in dairy cows during postpartum period.

Exploring the protective role of recombinant type III interferons in respiratory infections: Insights from an Mx1-deficient mouse model.

BACKGROUND: Type III interferons (IFNs) are regarded as safe and effective preventive agents for viral infections of the respiratory tract. The effectiveness of the preventive use of type III IFNs in patients with polymorphisms in critical antiviral ISGs is particularly relevant. We utilized Balb/c mice deficient in the Mx1 gene as model organisms. METHODS: Recombinant IFNs were administered intranasally one day before infection with the mouse-adapted pandemic strain of influenza A virus (IAV), A/California/07/09 (H1N1pdm09). Oral health outcomes in an HIV cohort with comorbidities- implementation roadmap for a longitudinal prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Long-term antiretroviral therapy (ART) perpetually suppresses HIV load and has dramatically altered the prognosis of HIV infection, such that HIV is now regarded as a chronic disease. Side effects of ART in Patients With HIV (PWH), has introduced new challenges including "metabolic" (systemic) and oral complications. Furthermore, inflammation persists despite great viral load suppression and normal levels of CD4+ cell count. The impact of ART on the spectrum of oral diseases among PWH is often overlooked relative to other systemic complications. There is paucity of data on oral com
