BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of an enterovirus infection may be achieved through direct virus detection from fecal or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples by virus isolation or PCR. In 1976 blood samples from 748 patients were tested for complement fixation antibodies against the virus of tickborne encephalitis.
