Potential Probiotic Lactic Acid Bacteria with Anti-Penicillium expansum Activity from Different Species of Tunisian Edible Snails.

This study aimed to isolate lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from the digestive tract, meat and slime of edible snails (Helix lucorum, Helix asper … 43 LAB strains showed inhibitory activity against a broad spectrum of pathogenic Gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, fungi, and yeast. Our findings suggest that L. brevis (EVM12 and EVM14) and Ent. faecium HAS34 strains could be potential candidates for probiotics with interesting antibacterial and anti-P. expansum activities.

Synthesis and Antimicrobial Properties of a Ciprofloxacin and PAMAM-dendrimer Conjugate.

Infections caused by bacteria resistant to antibiotics are an increasing problem. Multivalent antibiotics could be a solution. In the present study, a covalent conjugate between Ciprofloxacin and a G0-PAMAM dendrimer has been synthesized and tested against clinically relevant Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The conjugate has antimicrobial activity and there is a positive dendritic effect compared to Ciprofloxacin itself.

[Antimicrobial susceptibility and frequency of occurrence of clinical blood isolates in Sfax-Tunisia (1993-1998)].

Antimicrobial susceptibility and frequency of occurrence of clinical blood isolates in Sfax-Tunisia (1993-1998). The choice of antimicrobial therapy for the treatment of bacteremia is often empirical and based on the knowledge of susceptibility profiles of the most common bacteria causing such infections. This study determines the bacterial etiology of bacteremic episodes and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns recorded at a teaching hospital, from January 1993 to December 1998. We collected 2979 strains responsible for bacteremia. Gram negative bacteria were predominant (60%). The organisms

Chiral Sulfur Nanosheets for Dual-Selective Inhibition of Gram-Positive Bacteria.

Elemental sulfur is the oldest known antimicrobial agent. However, conventional sulfur in the clinic suffers from poor aqueous solubility an … y kill Gram-positive drug-resistant bacteria, while no obvious bacterial inhibition is observed for Gram-negative bacteria. Mechanism studies reveal that S-NSs produce numerous reactive oxygen specipoes and hydrogen sulfide after incubation with bacteria, thus causing bacterial membrane destruction, respiratory chain damage, and ATP production inhibition. Upon spraying …

Unveiling nanotubes-mediated communication: Enterococcus faecalis countering Salmonella ser. Typhi - In vitro and In vivo insights.

Bacteria communicate with each other through contact-dependent and contact-independent mechanisms. While certain contact-dependent mechanism … ngs suggest that the formation of nanotubes is an inherent trait observed in both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Interestingly, bacteria generate nanotubes in dynamic environments, biofilms, and even within the gut of zebrafish. These nanotubes develops over time in accordance with the duration of incubation. Furthermore, E. faecalis effectively combats S. Ty …

Tetrachloroethene-dehalogenating bacteria.

Tetrachloroethene is a frequent groundwater contaminant often persisting in the subsurface environments. It is recalcitrant under aerobic conditions because it is in a highly oxidized state and is not readily susceptible to oxidation. Nevertheless, at least 15 organisms from different metabolic groups, viz. halorespirators (9), acetogens (2), methanogens (3) and facultative anaerobes (2), that are able to metabolize tetrachloroethene have been isolated as axenic cultures to-date. Some of these organisms couple dehalo-genation to energy conservation and utilize tetrachloroethene as the only sou

ESCMID postgraduate technical workshop on intracellular bacteria: from biology to clinic.

Infection by intracellular bacteria can lead to several diseases in both veterinary and human medicine. Unfortunately, the biology of these intracellular bacteria is highly complex due to their interactions with their host cells. Thus, it is very important to develop several tools in order to better understand the complex intracellular life of these pathogens, so allowing to improve the diagnosis options and the treatments of infectious diseases that they are causing. The workshop organised in Villars-sur-Ollon (Switzerland) by the ESCMID Study group on intracellular bacteria was a good opport

Detection of selected fastidious bacteria.

The intent of this article is to describe the optimal methods for culture recovery of 7 fastidious bacteria: Legionella species, Brucella species, Francisella tularensis, Leptospira species, Borrelia burgdorferi, Bartonella species, and Bordetella species. These organisms share much in common beyond the fact that their genus names all end in the letter "a." Culture recovery of these organisms, even from adequate clinical specimens, is logistically demanding, often costly, and lacking in both timeliness and sensitivity. In addition, there is generally no need to recover culture isolates on whic

Human α-Defensin 6: A Small Peptide That Self-Assembles and Protects the Host by Entangling Microbes.

Human α-defensin 6 (HD6) is a 32-residue cysteine-rich peptide that contributes to innate immunity by protecting the host at mucosal sites. This peptide is produced in small intestinal Paneth cells, stored as an 81-residue precursor peptide named proHD6 in granules, and released into the lumen. One unusual feature of HD6 is that it lacks the broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity observed for other human α-defensins, including the Paneth cell peptide human α-defensin 5 (HD5). HD6 exhibits unprecedented self-assembly properties, which confer an unusual host-defense function. HD6 monomers self-as
