Neural specificity of scene representations is related to memory performance in childhood.

Successful memory encoding is supported by medial temporal, retrosplenial, and occipital regions, which show developmental differences in recruitment from childhood to adulthood. However, little is known about the extent to which neural specificity in these brain regions, or the distinctiveness with which sensory information is represented, continues to develop during middle childhood and how it contributes to memory performance. The present study used multivariate pattern analysis to examine the distinctiveness of different scene representations in 169 children and 31 adults, and its relation

Pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-induced c-fos expression in the hippocampus of kindled rats is suppressed by concomitant treatment with naloxone.

Rats were kindled by repeated injections of pentylenetetrazole (PTZ; 37.5 mg/kg; i.p.) in the presence or absence of the opioid receptor antagonist naloxone. Naloxone (10 mg/kg; i.p.) applied 30 min before each PTZ application had no major effect on the seizure development, although a slight decrease in the seizure expression of fully kindled animals could be observed. In the kindled animals, a pronounced but transient increase in c-fos mRNA level was observed in several brain areas after the injection of PTZ. The magnitude of c-fos induction was related to the seizure stage reached. Detectabl

Evaluation of GABAergic and Glutamatergic Levels in the Dorsal Anterior Cingulate Cortex of Patients With Bipolar Disorder: A Cross-Sectional 1H-MRS Study.

BACKGROUND: Imbalances between excitatory and inhibitory (E/I) neurotransmitters in the brain may contribute to the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder (BD). Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) measures glutamatergic neurometabolites and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) as indices of E/I neurotransmission. Previous meta-analyses reported higher glutamatergic neurometabolite levels in the medial prefrontal cortex of BD, but findings on GABA levels in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) of BD patients remain inconsistent. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study using 1H-MRS to c

Multi-focal ultrasound neuromodulation to the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex disrupts behavioural and neural pain processing.

Transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS) is a promising non-invasive neuromodulation technique for pain-related deep brain regions. This study aimed to investigate neural mechanisms underlying TUS effects on pain processing using neuroimaging. Thirty-two healthy participants underwent two double-blind, randomised sessions (active or sham). A tonic cold stimulus was applied during multifocal TUS applied to the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC), and during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). While no significant main effect on pain inten

Computational and neural mechanisms underlying the influence of action affordances on value learning.

When encountering a novel situation, an intelligent agent must identify which actions are most beneficial for interacting with that environment. One purported mechanism for narrowing down the scope of possible actions is action affordance. Here, we examine the neuro-computational mechanisms accounting for how action affordance shapes value-based learning in a novel environment by combining a novel behavioral task with computational modeling of human behavioral and fMRI data. Our findings indicate that action affordance operates as an independent system that concurrently guides action-selection

Altered spontaneous activity and functional connectivity of the cingulate gyrus is correlated with anxiety in patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to apply the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the relationship between benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) and anxiety. METHODS: 30 healthy subjects and 30 patients with diagnosis of unilateral idiopathic BPPV were recruited. All patients underwent generalized anxiety disorder 7-item scale (GAD-7) evaluations and fMRI. The ALFF method was used to assess the spontaneous brain activity. We further analyze the functional connectivity (FC) to explore changes in remote connectivity of the cingulate gyrus in patients with BPP

Early life adversity shapes neural and behavioural responses to oxytocin during altruistic decision-making.

What makes some people willing to help strangers at a personal cost, while others are more hesitant or selective? Early life adversity - such as neglect or abuse - may shape how we respond to strangers in need later in life, yet the underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. In this study we tested whether the neuropeptide oxytocin, a key modulator for a rich repertoire of social behaviours, influences altruistic decisions in adults with different childhood experiences. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a validated altruistic donation task, the study showed that oxytocin

Lithium effects in the frontolimbic circuitry: a systematic review of neuroimaging findings in bipolar disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Lithium is a cornerstone treatment for bipolar disorder, but the biological mechanisms underlying its therapeutic effects remain incompletely defined. We adopt a network-level, cross-modal perspective focused on frontolimbic circuitry and explicitly examine links between neuroimaging findings and clinical lithium response. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, we searched PubMed and Embase to September 3, 2025. Studies of humans were eligible when they compared lithium-treated bipolar subjects with non-lithium bipolar subjects, other treatment, healthy controls, or within-subjec

Subcallosal cingulate functional connectivity in depression: a systematic review of brain stimulation-induced changes and pretreatment connectivity predictors.

Major depressive episode (MDE) is a common mental disorder that severely impacts patients' lives and carries a high suicide risk. About 30% of patients are resistant to oral antidepressants, necessitating alternative approaches such as neurostimulation. The subcallosal cingulate (SCC), characterized by hyperactivity and altered functional connectivity (FC) in MDE, has emerged as a key target for interventions like deep brain stimulation (DBS) and transcranial focused ultrasound stimulation (TUS). Other techniques, including repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and electroconvuls

Linking brain structure to stress reactivity: cingulate surface area predicts acute cortisol responses.

BACKGROUND: Altered stress responses are closely linked to mental disorders, but the role of brain structure in acute cortisol responses to psychosocial stress remains underexplored, particularly in healthy individuals. Previous studies, with predominantly small samples, primarily focused on selected limbic regions and functional measures. Thus, this study investigates associations between brain structure and cortisol responses to psychosocial stress, exploring if hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis reactivity can be predicted from brain morphology. METHODS: Our study included 291 subjects (1

Negative Schizotypy Associated With Weaker Intersubject Correlation in Dynamic Functional Connectivity During Empathic Accuracy Task.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Previous studies on Empathic Accuracy Task (EAT) suggested patients with schizophrenia exhibited altered brain activations in the precuneus, middle frontal gyrus, and thalamus. However, it remains unclear whether individuals with schizotypy would exhibit similar alterations of brain activations associated with EAT. This study aimed to examine the relationships between schizotypy and intersubject correlation (ISC) during EAT. STUDY DESIGN: Forty-seven college students undertook the Chinese version of EAT in a 3T MRI scanner. The Chapman Social Anhedonia Scale (CSAS)

Neuroticism modulates functional connectivity of the midcingulate cortex during emotional conflict.

Neuroticism (NT) is a fundamental personality trait and a major risk factor for both the onset and persistence of depression and anxiety disorders. Although NT involves alterations in emotion-cognition interaction, its precise neural mechanism remains insufficiently understood. Leveraging the word-face Stroop task, we examined neural circuits engaged during emotional conflict using a relatively large sample that exhibited a wide range of NT levels. Generalized psychophysiological interaction (gPPI) analyses revealed that individuals with high NT were characterized by decreased functional conne

Neural correlates of social affect and social cognition as risk markers of bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: The identification of early warning signs is of great importance for identifying individuals at risk for mental disorders. Especially in the case of bipolar disorder, these research endeavours are imperative considering that the frequently delayed diagnoses and longer illness duration are associated with symptom exacerbation and lower recovery rates. AIMS: To multimodally investigate associations between hypomanic personality traits and altered social affect and social cognition to probe their role as early warning signs of bipolar disorder. METHOD: In a community sample (n = 140

Contributions of the default mode and central executive networks during posterior cingulate cortex-targeted fMRI neurofeedback in PTSD.

INTRODUCTION: Functional magnetic resonance imaging-based neurofeedback (fMRI-NFB) enables individuals to regulate brain activity implicated in psychopathology, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While most fMRI-NFB studies in PTSD target the amygdala, which engages the central executive network (CEN) for top-down regulation, the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), a core node of the default mode network (DMN), has recently emerged as a promising therapeutic target. However, the relative contributions of intra-network DMN mechanisms versus inter-network CEN engagement during PCC do

Invasive brain mapping identifies personalized therapeutic neuromodulation targets that suppress OCD network activity.

Deep brain stimulation has been used to treat severe, refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) with variable outcomes across multiple anatomical targets. To overcome these limitations, we developed an invasive brain mapping paradigm in which electrodes were implanted across the OCD cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical circuit. We then performed extensive stimulation mapping during a multi-day inpatient stay to identify personalized therapeutic targets and characterize their downstream circuit effects. We found two targets within the right ventral capsule (VC) that acutely reduced OCD symptom

Can EEG-Neurofeedback Training Enhance Effective Connectivity in People With Chronic Secondary Musculoskeletal Pain? A Secondary Analysis of a Feasibility Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Persistent musculoskeletal pain is associated with altered functional and effective connectivity (EC) between cortical regions involved in pain processing. Especially, disruptions in the infraslow fluctuation (ISF) frequency band can contribute to pain persistence. ISF electroencephalography-neurofeedback (EEG-NF) has emerged as a potential non-invasive neuromodulatory intervention targeting cortical brain regions to restore balance and modulate pain-related pathways. However, limited research explores its effect on EC, a measure of directional information flow critical to pain e

Basis functions for complex social decisions in dorsomedial frontal cortex.

Navigating social environments is a fundamental challenge for the brain. It has been established that the brain solves this problem, in part, by representing social information in an agent-centric manner; knowledge about others' abilities or attitudes is tagged to individuals such as 'oneself' or the 'other'1-6. This intuitive approach has informed the understanding of key nodes in the social parts of the brain, the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) and the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC)7-9. However, the patterns or combinations in which individuals might interact with one another is as i

Attenuated cognitive control network connectivity as a mechanism in mother-daughter intergenerational transmission of depression: a preliminary study.

Identifying brain mechanisms implicated in the intergenerational transmission of major depressive disorder (MDD) is crucial for early detection and developing novel interventions. One promising mechanism involves altered intrinsic connectivity patterns in brain networks supporting emotion processing, including within the cognitive control network (CCN). The current preliminary study used resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine whether altered CCN connectivity patterns are a brain-based mechanism of intergenerational risk for depression. We tested whether CCN conne

Brain activity during Stroop task performance at age 74 after exposure to the Dutch famine during early gestation.

OBJECTIVE: Poorer performance on the Stroop task has been reported after prenatal famine exposure at age 58, potentially indicating cognitive decline. We investigated whether brain activation during Stroop task performance at age 74 differed between individuals exposed to famine prenatally, individuals born before and individuals conceived after the famine. METHOD: In the Dutch famine birth cohort, we performed a Stroop task fMRI study of individuals exposed (n = 22) or unexposed (born before (n = 18) or conceived after (n = 25)) to famine in early gestation. We studied group differences in t
