A radiation keratosis occurred in a woman who wore a radioactive gold ring forty-three years ago. Clinicians should be aware that not all "warty lesions" on the hands are actinic keratosis, seborrheic keratosis, or warts. Radioactive gold rings still exist. Diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion, since patients may no longer be wearing the offending ring.

A 48-year-old Japanese man had miliary calcified papules on the distal fingers after long-term hemodialysis. The crystals in the dermis consisted of calcium oxalate, as revealed by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive x-ray microanalysis. The authors report 5 cases of mycetomas of the fingers observed over a period of 5 years in a series of 18 mycetomas of the hand. In 3 cases, the lesion only involved the soft tissues, which were excised with 2 apparent cures after 2 and 5 years and one recurrence. In the other 2 cases, the bone was invaded and 2 digital amputations were performed without recurrence after 2 and 6 years. The authors review the epidemiology and histopathology of this disease as well as the absence of any truly effective medical treatment. In the presence of bone invasion, only excision can ensure cure.

A short review on organic pigments in plastics as a cause of allergic contact dermatitis is presented. Previously, organic pigments have been reported as provoking allergic pigmented contact dermatitis when used in cosmetics. Here we present the case of a patient who developed allergic contact dermatitis from an organic pigment (Irgalite Orange F2G) in a plastic glove. This shows that organic pigments in plastics can also cause allergic contact dermatitis. The potential sensitizing capacity of organic pigments should be noted.

2 patients are reported with chronic hand dermatitis related to sensitization to sodium hypochlorite, as the active component in a bleaching product. To avoid irritant reactions in patch testing, a sodium hypochlorite concentration of 1.0% appeared to be useful. It is concluded that with regard to the frequent use of bleaching agents, allergy to sodium hypochlorite must be considered in certain cases of unidentified chronic allergic hand dermatitis.

A case report of a cutaneous larva migrans caused by the nematode, Gnathostoma spinigerum, in which the worm was visualized at surgery and successfully removed, is presented. To the best of our knowledge, this is the second case of documented subcutaneous gnathostomiasis in the Western Hemisphere and the first in the upper extremity.

Irritant or allergic contact dermatitis of the hands is the main occupational hazard for hairdressers. The shampoos, dyes, and waving solutions that must be applied by hairdressers are the agents involved. A nodular, centrally verrucous, noninfectious pyoderma of the dorsal aspects of the hands and fingers developed in a 66-year-old man with metastatic bladder carcinoma after palliative cisplatin therapy. The dermatosis was clinically similar to erythema elevatum diutinum but biopsy failed to show substantial leukocytoclastic vasculitis. The eruption responded to dapsone. The role of cisplatin in the induction of the dermatosis is speculative.
