Effective dose span of ten different cone beam CT devices.

OBJECTIVES: Evaluation and reduction of dose are important issues. Since cone beam CT (CBCT) has been established now not just in dentistry, the number of acquired examinations continues to rise. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to compare the doses of available devices on the market owing to different exposition parameters, volumes and geometries. The aim of this study was to evaluate the spans of effective doses (EDs) of ten different CBCT devices. METHODS: 48 thermoluminescent dosemeters were placed in 24 sites in a RANDO(®) head phantom. Protocols with lowest exposition parameters and

Epidemiological analysis of the facial fractures pattern in relation to motorcycle helmet type: A retrospective study on 282 patients.

Most maxillofacial traumas are caused by road traffic collisions and, in particular, by motorcycle accidents. Helmets represent an efficient protective tool in these traumas but they do not provide complete protection. The aim of this study was to perform an epidemiological analysis of facial fractures pattern in relation to the helmet type worn during the accident. The study was a retrospective analysis of 282 patients with a diagnosis of maxillofacial fracture caused by a motorcycle accident. The patients were divided in three groups based on helmet type (Group A: full-face helmet; Group B:

Association Between Conventional Bicycle Helmet Use and Facial Injuries After Bicycle Crashes.

IMPORTANCE: Bicycling is an increasingly common activity in the United States that is often associated with fall injuries to the head and face. Although helmets lessen head injury, their role in reducing facial injuries is less clear; therefore, it is important to understand the protective capacity for the face in current helmet design. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the conventional bicycle helmet's association with the rate of facial injury after bicycle crashes. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study accessed records from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2014, from the

Bicycle helmets - To wear or not to wear? A meta-analyses of the effects of bicycle helmets on injuries.

A meta-analysis has been conducted of the effects of bicycle helmets on serious head injury and other injuries among crash involved cyclists. 179 effect estimates from 55 studies from 1989-2017 are included in the meta-analysis. The use of bicycle helmets was found to reduce head injury by 48%, serious head injury by 60%, traumatic brain injury by 53%, face injury by 23%, and the total number of killed or seriously injured cyclists by 34%. Bicycle helmets were not found to have any statistically significant effect on cervical spine injury. There is no indication that the results from bicycle h

Injury Severity of Motorcycle Riders Involved in Traffic Crashes in Hunan, China: A Mixed Ordered Logit Approach.

Issues related to motorcycle safety in China have not received enough research attention. As such, the causal relationship between injury outcomes of motorcycle crashes and potential risk factors remains unknown. This study intended to investigate the injury risk of motorcyclists involved in road traffic crashes in China. To account for the ordinal nature of response outcomes and unobserved heterogeneity, a mixed ordered logit model was employed. Given that the crash occurrence process is different between intersections and non-intersections, separate models were developed for these locations

DUI histories in intoxicated injured bicyclists.

INTRODUCTION: It has been well documented that the use of alcohol correlates with injury risk, especially in DUI (driving under the influence) and DWI (driving while intoxicated). Consumption of alcohol in patients presenting with bicycle-related injuries is associated with greater injury severity, longer hospitalization, and higher health care costs. We hypothesized that intoxicated patients operating a bicycle with traumatic injuries have previous DUI or DWI convictions and had lost their privilege to drive a motor vehicle, resorted to bicycling, and had continued alcohol consumption despite

Vulnerability of motorcycle riders and co-riders to injuries in multi-occupant crashes.

In developing countries, most motorcycles are ridden with more than one occupant. The objective of this study was to establish the relative vulnerability of riders and co-riders to injury and determine the injury risk factors in multi-occupant motorcycle crashes. Between January and December 2010, we collected crash and injury data from victims of multi-occupant motorcycle. It is a hospital-based study. The probability of sustaining injuries was similar for co-riders and riders, but co-riders were more likely to sustain severe injuries. Occupants of >2-occupant motorcycles were also more likel
