Influence of Sociospatial determinants on knowledge, attitudes and practices related to the plague in a population living in endemic areas in the central highlands, Madagascar.

BACKGROUND: Plague is endemic to the central highlands of Madagascar. Sporadic human cases or outbreaks can occur annually in these areas. In Madagascar, the associations between endemicity and the knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) of the population with regard to this disease remain poorly documented. The aim of this study was to assess KAP related to plague among the population living in the central highlands. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in the general population from June to August 2017. Based on the reported cases of plague between 2006 and 2015 in two central h

The problem of vaccination refusal: a review with guidance for pediatricians.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In the wake of multiple recent outbreaks of the measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases, it is crucial to understand and address parental concerns about vaccination. The purposes of this review are: to identify the causes of vaccine resistance, to elucidate the variables that have led to the success or failure of interventions to date, and to consider implications for pediatricians treating children whose parents are vaccination-resistant. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent research draws on insights from cognitive science to understand vaccine resistance and to develop more ef

How to understand and address the cultural aspects and consequences of diagnosis of epilepsy, including stigma.

Epilepsy is one of the most prevalent serious neurological diseases. It is unique, being the only severe and disabling neurological disease that is fully treatable in the majority of cases, but on the other hand, associated with stigma, prejudice and discriminatory practices, which negatively impact people's everyday life in important areas, such as access to education, employment, marriage and social integration. For centuries, people with epilepsy (PWE) were stigmatized in all societies, with the consequences of prejudice and discrimination adding to the medical burden of the disease. Myths

Spinal Cord Injury Provider Knowledge and Attitudes Toward Bacteriuria Management and Antibiotic Stewardship.

INTRODUCTION: Bacteriuria, either asymptomatic or urinary tract infection, is common in persons with spinal cord injury or disorder (SCI/D). In the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), conflicting clinical practice guidelines make appropriate bacteriuria management and antibiotic stewardship challenging. OBJECTIVE: To explore SCI/D provider knowledge, attitudes, and teamwork around bacteriuria management during the VHA SCI/D annual examination. DESIGN: Mixed methods. SETTING: VHA SCI/D centers. PARTICIPANTS: SCI/D staff providers and physical medicine and rehabilitation resident physician

High burden and low awareness of toxoplasmosis in the United States.

Toxoplasmosis, a disease with diverse clinical manifestations, caused by infection with the Apicomplexan parasite, Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii), is a major source of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Although toxoplasmosis prevalence and mortality have declined over the past two decades, the CDC considers this disease a neglected parasitic infection requiring public health action. Here, we overview the literature to bring attention to the prevalence of the disease in the United States, and high economic burden associated with the disease. The conclusions to be drawn are clear: the

Impact of the take ACTION Train-the-Trainer model of opioid overdose education with naloxone distribution- who benefits?

Overdose education with naloxone distribution (OEND) is a key national strategy to reduce morbidity and mortality related to opioid overdoses. Train-the-trainer model has been one method to increase the pool of trainers to facilitate greater dissemination of OEND. This exploratory study seeks to (1) evaluate participant's change in knowledge and confidence, (2) examine if pre- and post-training test outcomes differed by occupation and level of experience, and (3) determine if train-the-trainer participants trained others 6 months later. Methods: Fifteen train-the-trainer sessions were delivere

"We were afraid of the lion that has roared next to us"; community response to reactive focal mass drug administration for malaria in Eswatini (formerly Swaziland).

BACKGROUND: Reactive focal mass drug administration (rfMDA), or presumptive treatment without malaria testing of household members and neighbours of a passively identified malaria case, is currently being explored as a possible malaria elimination strategy in low transmission settings. One of the primary factors determining the effectiveness of rfMDA on reducing or interrupting transmission is achieving high coverage of the target population with drug administration. This study aims to explore the acceptability of rfMDA and identify facilitators and barriers to its potential implementation, as

"Witchdoctors" in White Coats: Politics and Healing Knowledge in Tanzania.

At the center of conflict between the state and traditional healers (waganga wa kienyeji) over the meanings of traditional healing in contemporary Tanzania are debates about what constitutes knowledge, the production of knowledge, and the legitimacy of "traditional" ways of knowing. Drawing on media analysis and ethnographic fieldwork carried out between 2004 and 2016, I describe how healers locate their knowledge in experience, ancestors, and spirits, while the state imagines a future where traditional healers are formally educated and practice in white uniforms. While embedded in a larger co

Effectiveness of a comprehensive educational programme for Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) to identify individuals in the Udupi district with bleeding disorders: A community-based survey.

INTRODUCTION: The awareness and knowledge on bleeding disorders is generally poor among the rural population. Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) serve as the facilitators between the rural community and the health care system. Training of ASHAs in screening of rural population for early identification of bleeding disorders can enable prompt referral, timely detection and management of bleeding disorders. AIM: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an ASHA training programme for identification of suspected bleeding disorder cases. METHODS: A population-based, cross-

MALARIA SELF-CARE IN NIMBORAN SUBDISTRICT, JAYAPURA DISTRICT, PAPUA PROVINCE, INDONESIA.

Papua is one of five provinces with high malaria incidence in Indonesia. In 2009, the Indonesian Ministry of Health issued decree No 293 on malaria elimination. Socioeconomic, culture and psychological conditions, and perception of malaria are determining factors in seeking treatment. Health seeking behavior also are influenced by enabling factors, such as income and health insurance; and by health providers, such as availability of health care facilities, tariffs and living locationss. Self-care is one form of community participation in knowledge, prevention and early detection of malaria, an

Self-reported sun-related knowledge, attitudes and behaviours among schoolchildren attending South African primary schools.

BACKGROUND: Skin cancer and other adverse health effects result from excess solar ultraviolet radiation exposure. Sun protective practices are important interventions for skin cancer prevention, particularly when implemented early in life. Several international studies have assessed children's sun-related knowledge, attitudes and behaviours in school settings but never before in Southern Africa, where multiethnic populations exist. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to describe the sun-related knowledge, attitudes and behaviours as self-reported by South African primary schoolchildren and

OBJECTIVES: To examine the perceptions of disease aetiology and the effect of own behaviour on health among poly-pharmacy patients with non-Western backgrounds in Denmark. METHODS: The study was based on 26 extended medication reviews with patients of non-Western backgrounds aged 50+ who use at least four prescription drugs regularly. The reviews were conducted by 12 pharmacists with the same mother-tongue background as the participants. The reviews included patient interviews on which the data in this article are based. In total, four open-ended questions from the patient interviews were ana
