Pandemic preparedness in shaping psychosocial working conditions - insights for occupational safety and health from a longitudinal mixed-methods study during the COVID-19 pandemic at six company sites of one organization in Germany.

OBJECTIVES: This longitudinal mixed-methods study explores how one company group dealt with COVID-19 pandemic-related challenges and how employees and managers perceived work-related psychosocial demands in Germany. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed panel survey data from 322 employees and managers across diverse working fields, e.g., assembly line/production, office, company medical service, and factory security service. Employees and managers were recruited from six German company sites in the federal states of Bavaria, Baden-Wurttemberg, and Lower Saxony of one large company group. The su

Overview of environmental and occupational vanadium exposure and associated health outcomes: an article based on a presentation at the 8th International Symposium on Vanadium Chemistry, Biological Chemistry, and Toxicology, Washington DC, August 15-18, 2012.

Vanadium (V) has a variety of applications that make it suitable for use in ceramic production and decoration, production of pigments for a variety of products, an accelerator for drying paint, production of aniline black dye, and as a mordant in coloring textiles. Taking advantage of its hardness, resilience, ability to form alloys, and its resistance to corrosion, V is also used in the production of tools, steel, machinery, and surgical implants. V is employed in producing photographic developers, batteries, and semi-conductors, and in catalyst-based recycling processes. As technologies have

Description of Occupational Contact Dermatitis Related to the Use of Personal Protective Equipment with a History of Atopy in Health Workers at Prof. DR. Chairuddin Panusunan Lubis Universitas Sumatera Utara and H. Adam Malik Hospital.

INTRODUCTION: Coronavirus disease 2019 was declared a pandemic by WHO in March 2020. The Indonesian Ministry of Health has recommended many prevention strategies including the use of hand sanitizers (HSs) and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), especially for healthcare workers. Previous research reported that the increase in the use of HS and PPE is directly proportional to the increase in the incidence of occupational skin diseases. AIMS: To find out the prevalence of work-related contact dermatitis patients related to the use of PPE in healthcare workers at Prof. DR. Chairuddin

Explainable Machine Learning for Concurrent Screening of Elevated Work-Related Fatigue Using Routine Working-Hour and Occupational Health Data Among Manufacturing Workers: A Cross-Sectional Model Development and Internal Validation Study.

Background: Work-related fatigue is a preventable occupational health concern in high-intensity manufacturing environments. However, supervisors and occupational health services often lack transparent criteria to support the preventive review of overtime practices. This study developed and internally validated an explainable human-in-the-loop concurrent screening model to identify employees with currently elevated work-related fatigue using routinely collected working-hour records and occupational health examination data. Materials and Methods: De-identified administrative and occupational hea

What is the volume, quality and characteristics of evidence relating to the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of multi-disciplinary occupational health interventions aiming to improve work-related outcomes for employed adults? An evidence and gap map of systematic reviews.

BackgroundIn the UK, tens of millions of working days are lost due to work-related ill health every year, costing billions of pounds. The role of Occupational Health (OH) services is vital in helping workers to maintain employment when they encounter injury or illness. OH providers traditionally rely on a clinical workforce to deliver these services, particularly doctors and nurses with OH qualifications. However, the increasing demand for OH services is unlikely to be met in the future using this traditional model, due to the declining number of OH-trained doctors and nurses in the UK. Multi-

Comment on Loddé et al. Does Decreased Diffusing Capacity of the Lungs for Carbon Monoxide Constitute a Risk of Decompression Sickness in Occupational Divers? Int. J. Environ. Res. Public Health 2023, 20, 6516.

This letter addresses errors in the statistical analysis found in a paper addressing pulmonary diffusing capacity and decompression sickness. Our re-analysis could not confirm any of the significant statistical contrasts described for the bubble data, invalidating the speculation on the relationships between bubble scores and decompression sickness.

Acceptability and feasibility of the Home Support Needs Assessment in a forensic mental health service: An initial study.

INTRODUCTION: Identifying and addressing the support needs of forensic mental health patients in daily life occupations is critical yet complex due to the health comorbidities and environmental restrictions impacting their participation. Occupational therapists support forensic patient recovery by facilitating their performance in daily life occupations required at home and in the community. Standardised assessments of daily living are important for guiding interventions. The Home Support Needs Assessment (HSNA) is a standardised measure identifying unmet support needs in daily life occupation

A quantitative solar ultraviolet radiation job-exposure matrix for Europe.

INTRODUCTION: Outdoor workers are exposed to high levels of solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR). UVR causes skin cancer and is a risk factor for cataract and other short- and long-term health effects, but there are significant knowledge gaps regarding the exposure-response relations based on quantitative measures of UVR exposure. We developed a quantitative UVR job-exposure matrix (JEM) for the general working population of Europe. METHODS: Three experts from each of Northern, Central, and Southern Europe rated duration of outdoor work for all 372 occupations defined by the International Standa

Substance Use Right Before or During Work Among the Young US Workers: Evidence From the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 Cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Substance use right before or during work (hereinafter, "substance use in the workplace") poses significant health risks to users, colleagues, and the public in the workplace. However, less clear are figures on recent prevalence, characteristics of those engaging in such behaviors, and variations across occupations. This study examines the prevalence of substance use in the workplace, individual and work-related characteristics, and substance use risks across different occupations among a nationally representative sample of workers in their early 30 s-a period of heightened substanc

Assessing contact dermatitis risk among Manitoba workers in the Manitoba Occupational Disease Surveillance System.

INTRODUCTION: This exploratory study aimed to assess contact dermatitis (CD) risk among workers using the Manitoba Occupational Disease Surveillance System (MODSS). METHODS: The MODSS linked accepted time-loss claims from the Workers' Compensation Board of Manitoba (2006-2019), with administrative health data from medical and hospital records (1996-2020). CD risk by occupation and industry (hazard ratio, 95% confidence intervals) was estimated using Cox proportional hazard models, adjusted for age and stratified by sex. RESULTS: Increased risk of new onset CD was observed among some occupati

Higher-status occupations and breast cancer: a life-course stress approach.

Using the 1957-2011 data from 3682 White non-Hispanic women (297 incident breast cancer cases) in the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study, United States, we explore the effect of occupation in 1975 (at age 36) on breast cancer incidence up to age 72. Our study is motivated by the paradoxical association between higher-status occupations and elevated breast cancer risk, which presents a challenge to the consistent health advantage of higher social class. We found that women in professional occupations had 72122% and women in managerial occupations had 57-89% higher risk of a breast cancer diagnosis th

Occupational exposures associated with work-related asthma and work-related wheezing among U.S. workers.

BACKGROUND: National estimates of occupational asthma (OA) in the United States are sparse. METHODS: Using data from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) 1988-1994, we analyzed associations between occupation and work-related asthma and work-related wheezing among U.S. workers. RESULTS: This study identified several occupations that were at risk of developing work-related asthma and/or wheezing, with cleaners and equipment cleaners showing the highest risks. Other major occupations identified were farm and agriculture; entertainment; protective services; co

Alcohol and other drug use by Australian workers: insights from a nationally representative cross-sectional survey.

In the Australian population, a substantial number of people consume alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATODs). As most people who use ATOD are employed, the workplace is an environment through which ATOD primary and secondary preventive health interventions can be implemented. However, resource allocation can be informed by research that determines priority industries and occupations, as indicated by the prevalence of ATOD use, numbers of users, and likelihood of use (i.e. adjusted odds ratios). A secondary analysis of the 2022-23 Australian National Drug Strategy Household Survey was conduct

Occupation and 20-year hearing decline: findings from The HUNT Study.

BACKGROUND: Studies show that certain occupations are associated with an increased risk of hearing loss. However, many studies are cross-sectional, and the few longitudinal studies are mostly small or focus on only one occupation. AIMS: We aimed to quantify the long-term hearing decline among workers in different occupations and assess whether the change differs between the occupations. METHODS: The study population was 4525 adults who participated in two population-based health studies in Norway, HUNT2 1996-1998 and HUNT4 2017-2019. Linear regression models assessed the association between

Occupational risk factors for the sporadic form of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

Some case reports among European farmers and a few case-control studies suggested the hypothesis of an increased risk of the sporadic form of CJD (sCJD) associated with livestock farming or work as a butcher. Also, the discovery of the possibility of transmission of the disease via blood or by contact following corneal or dura madre transplant suggested that health occupations might also run higher sCJD risks. However, a meta-analysis of three case-control studies and a multicentre European study did not find any positive association between sCJD and health-related jobs or occupational contact…
