Firearm injuries represent a major source of trauma in conflict‑affected regions, yet multicenter data from Palestine remain scarce. This multicenter study provides the first large epidemiological analysis of firearms injuries across eight hospitals in the West Bank, encompassing 392 patients treated between 2020 and 2025. The cohort was overwhelmingly male (98.0%) and predominantly young, with a median age of 19.0 years [17.0-26.0]. Extremity injuries were most common, affecting 265 (67.6%) patients, while thoracoabdominal and vascular injuries, though less frequent, were associated with disp

Transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR) is a threatening and severe genetic disease characterized by damages to organs and systems caused by a pathological protein transthyretin produced in the liver. Clinical manifestations of this disease vary from injuries of the nervous system to injuries of the cardiovascular system. Prognosis for ATTR-amyloidosis remains unfavorable. The absence of pathognomonic symptoms complicates diagnostics of this disease, which tends to simulate other conditions. At present, medicines exist, which are pathogenetic in the treatment of ATTR-amyloidosis. The article describe

Cardiac and thoracic vascular injuries are among the most serious and life-threatening conditions seen in trauma care. These injuries often are not imaged because many patients die before reaching the hospital or require emergency surgery before imaging can be performed. However, with improvements in emergency care and imaging technology, radiologists are now more likely to encounter these injuries and must be prepared to recognize them quickly. Accurate and timely imaging is essential for guiding urgent treatment and improving outcomes in both blunt and penetrating trauma to the heart and maj

Sixty-six patients with atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis (RAS) and serum creatinine < or =2.0 mg/dl were treated with antihypertensive therapy, a statin, and aspirin. Renal stenting was reserved for patients with injuries to the heart, brain, or kidneys. The primary end point was stenotic kidney glomerular filtration rate (GFR) at 21 months; secondary end points included major adverse clinical events, serum creatinine, total GFR, and blood pressure (BP). After baseline evaluation, 26 of 66 patients underwent renal stenting because of injuries to the heart, brain, or kidneys. After 21 mont

AIM: In this study, we aimed to explore the toxic mechanisms of cardiovascular injuries induced by ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in atherosclerotic-susceptible ApoE(-/-) mice. An acute toxicological animal experiment was designed with PM2.5 exposure once a day, every other day, for three days.
METHODS: ApoE(-/-) and C57BL/6 mice were randomly categorized into four groups, respectively (n = 6): one control group, three groups exposed to PM2.5 alone at low-, mid-, and high-dose (3, 10, or 30 mg/kg b.w.). Heart rate (HR) and electrocardiogram (ECG) were monitored before instillation of

The increasing popularity of skiing as a recreational sport has resulted in a greater number of major thoracic and abdominal injuries. These injuries, unlike the more common orthopedic injuries, are often life threatening. This 8-year study reviews 44 thoracic and abdominal ski injuries managed at an urban trauma center since the inception of a helicopter air evacuation program with in-flight resuscitation capabilities. Twenty-five per cent of the injured had signs of hemorrhagic shock, and nearly 60% required a major operation. The injuries were caused by high-speed collisions with stationary

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Low-dose aspirin is used as a preventive treatment for ischemic heart disease and ischemic cerebrovascular disease, on the other hand gastrointestinal injuries are an adverse effect of aspirin. We reported that endoscopic surveillance reveals a high risk of gastroduodenal ulcer and erosion in aspirin users of ischemic heart disease. But risk of gastroduodenal injuries may be different among pre-existing disease. In the present study, endoscopic examination was performed to investigate the frequency of gastroduodenal injuries associated with low-dose aspirin in patients wit

Evaluating Behind Armor Blunt Trauma (BABT) is a critical step in preventing non-penetrating injuries in military personnel, which can result from the transfer of kinetic energy from projectiles impacting body armor. While the current NIJ Standard-0101.06 standard focuses on preventing excessive armor backface deformation, this standard does not account for the variability in impact location, thorax organ and tissue material properties, and injury thresholds in order to assess potential injury. To address this gap, Finite Element (FE) human body models (HBMs) have been employed to investigate

Right heart catheterization is overall considered a safe procedure, although complications can arise from venous access injuries, arrhythmias, vasovagal episodes, and pulmonary artery rupture. We present a case of left brachiocephalic vein perforation during a diagnostic right heart catheterization, which was managed conservatively. (Level of Difficulty: Beginner.).

Blunt chest trauma, if sustained selectively to the midchest or precordium, can result in a variety of cardiac injuries (3, 7). These lesions may involve separately or together all structures of the heart, including pericardium, myocardium, valves, and coronary arteries. Depending on the extent of trauma, such injuries can cause varying amounts of mechanical or electrical dysfunction. The incidence and nature of cardiac dysrhythmias following trauma are largely unknown clinically, but have been extensively documented in several animal studies (2, 4, 5). Disturbances in both impulse generation

Interleukin-33 (IL-33) is a member of the IL-1 cytokine family and is believed to play important roles in different diseases by binding to its specific receptor suppression of tumorigenicity 2 (ST2). In the heart, IL-33 is expressed in different cells including cardiomyocytes, fibroblasts, endothelium, and epithelium. Although many studies have been devoted to investigating the effects of IL-33 on heart diseases, its roles in myocardial injuries remain obscure, and thus further studies are mandatory to unravel the underlying molecular mechanisms. We highlighted the current knowledge of the mol

The physical principles of electricity and types of electrical injuries are reviewed. The extent of such injuries depends on the strength of the current: ventricular fibrillations can be induced by a current of 10mA, and even of 10 muA if the current passes directly through the heart. The extent of electrothermal injuries depends on the duration of the current flow and the contact area. Indirect electrical injuries may arise from interferance with cardiac pacemakers or monitoring equipment. Risks attendant on the use of even the "safest" electrical apparatus are discussed, with special referen

Nonpenetrating chest trauma with injury to the heart and aorta has become increasingly common, particularly as a result of rapid deceleration in high-speed vehicular accidents, over the past 2-3 decades. The high mortality rate of cardiac injuries and possible late onset complications make blunt cardiac injuries an important challenging point for legal medicine. One hundred and ninety cases with blunt cardiac injuries in a period of 3 years were analyzed retrospectively in terms of patterns of cardiac injury, survival times, and demographic profiles of the cases in this study.

The lungs are remarkably resilient organs and injuries to the lungs, whether from blunt or penetrating trauma, are not often the source of mortality. Instead, associated injuries to the heart, great vessels, chest wall, and other critical structures account for most morbidity and mortality associated with thoracic trauma. Hypovolemic shock, impending cardiac failure, neurological injury, and compromised respiratory function may all be present in a single individual with thoracic trauma whose injuries require immediate surgery. Anesthesia care for the thoracic trauma patient often involves cont

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Primary blast injury is produced by shock waves. Blast injuries to lungs are extremely critical threats to survival, but their etiology is largely undefined. The majority of animal models for these injuries use explosive or complex experimental settings, limiting the laboratory study of blast injury. The aim of this study was to establish a small-animal model for blast injuries, using laser-induced stress waves (LISWs) with high controllability, high reproducibility, and easy experimental settings.
STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: LISWs were used to produce isola

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Yiqi Huoxue Lishui (tonifying qi, promoting blood circulation, and promoting diuresis to relieve water retention) is a core therapeutic principle in traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of post-myocardial infarction heart failure (PMI-HF). Optimized New Shengmai Powder (ONSMP) is a traditional prescription composed of Astragalus mongholicus (Huangqi), Codonopsis pilosula (Dangshen) and other Chinese medicinal herbs. It has long been used in northern China to treat cardiovascular diseases such as "chest impediment" and heart failure characterized by qi

Suicidal incised neck injuries are infrequent and exhibit considerable forensic intricacies, particularly when compounded by pre-existing medical conditions. We delineate a case involving a 32-year-old male patient diagnosed with severe rheumatic heart disease and a history of double valve replacement, who succumbed to a self-inflicted incised neck wound during his hospitalization. The 7.5-cm incised wound presented two skin tags, indicative of hesitation cuts, and was devoid of any defensive injuries. The internal examination indicated an enlarged heart, artificial heart valves in situ, a pal
