Age-related changes in distribution of body weight on soles of feet for selected actions and postures.

We investigated age-related changes in the distribution of body weight on soles of feet in 878 healthy subjects ranging from 5 to 80 years of age. By modifying Morton's Staticometer, we constructed an instrument for measuring body-weight distribution over three areas of soles of the feet, the big toe (inner forefoot), the other four toes combined (outer forefoot) and the heels for both feet, thus a total of six areas. The weights in the six areas were recorded at the completion of nine selected actions and postures. We observed that for inhaling and exhaling standing postures, generally younge…

The enigmatic diagnosis of posterior tibialis tendon rupture.

Posterior tibialis tendon rupture is a diagnosis that is often missed. This is thought to be secondary to nonspecific clinical findings and … ndon function on manual testing is seen on examination. This is associated with loss of ipsilateral heel inversion on bilateral heel rise. The patient is usually unable to perform ipsilateral single leg heel rise and has less severe pes planus of the contralateral foot. This study reviews the presentation, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of p …

Effect of Kangaroo Care and Oral Sucrose on Pain in Premature Infants: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Premature infants hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit are routinely exposed to many painful procedures. Pain experienced during the neonatal period may lead to negative outcomes, especially in preterm neonates, hence pain in infants should be reduced. Kangaroo care and oral sucrose are some of the methods that can help reduce pain. AIM: This study aimed to compare the effects of kangaroo care and oral sucrose on pain relief in preterm infants during heel lancing. METHODS: Our study involved 64 infants. The infants were randomly divided into two groups using a randomi…

The role of foot morphology on foot function in diabetic subjects with or without neuropathy.

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of foot morphology, related with respect to diabetes and peripheral neuropathy in altering foot kinematics and plantar pressure during gait. Healthy and diabetic subjects with or without neuropathy with different foot types were analyzed. Three dimensional multisegment foot kinematics and plantar pressures were assessed on 120 feet: 40 feet (24 cavus, 20 with valgus heel and 11 with hallux valgus) in the control group, 80 feet in the diabetic (25 cavus 13 with valgus heel and 13 with hallux valgus) and the neuropathic groups (28 cavus, 24 with …

Arch-pad design and insole material jointly influence regional plantar loading and perceived comfort during walking in women's occupational footwear.

This study examined immediate effects of insole material and arch-pad design on perceived comfort and in-shoe plantar pressure in women's occupational shoes. Sixteen healthy young women completed nine randomised within-subject conditions (polyurethane, open-cell foams or silicone × no pad, arch-pad 1 or arch-pad 2) during level walking in standardised 35-mm heel shoes. Plantar pressure (contact area, peak pressure and pressure-time integral) was measured with an in-shoe pressure system, and comfort was rated using a footwear comfort scale. Arch-pad conditions increased medial-midfoot contact a…

Calf Endurance and Achilles Tendon Structure in Classical Ballet Dancers.

Optimal lower leg function is critical for ballet dancers to meet their occupational requirements. Achilles tendon injury is particularly de … er Achilles tendons than non-dancers (p = 0.016). Dancers demonstrated significantly higher maximum heel-rise height on the heel-rise test for calf endurance (p < 0.001) but performed significantly less work than non-dancers (p = 0.014). The results of this study support the use of the heel-rise test as a tool for screening and to guide rehabilitation.

Bilateral calcaneal insufficiency fractures due to chronic carbamazepine use for trigeminal neuralgia: A case report.

Stress fractures of calcaneus are uncommon cause of heel pain. Stress fractures could be seen in risc groups such as metabolic diseases/medications causing poor bone quality and exposing repetitive microtrauma. Anti-epileptic drug (AED) use is related with poor bone quality and increased fracture risc. Although carbamazepine-induced stress fracture is a well-known entity and there are case reports in other bones such as the femoral neck, bilateral calcaneal insufficiency fractures is an extraordinary location. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case reporting an insufficiency frac…

Analgesic effect of non-nutritive sucking in term neonates: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Newborns commonly experience pain due to a variety of reasons. Non-nutritive sucking (NNS) is thought to be an effective non-pharmacological method of pain-relief. However, the significant heterogeneity in some systematic reviews limited the certainty of the findings about NNS. Hence, this study was aimed at evaluating the analgesic effect and safety of NNS in healthy term neonates during the heel prick test, using the Neonatal Pain Agitation and Sedation Scale (N-PASS). METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial, 42 term infants were included: 22 infants in the intervention gro…

Latent Factor Modeling Reveals Unexpected Spatial Heterogeneity in Human Alzheimer's Disease Brain Transcriptomes.

The purpose of this study was to test pathogenetic models for the "unprovoked" ankle inversion injuries seen in functional ankle unstable subjects. The consequence of spatial mal-alignment of the ankle/foot complex on the risk of producing an ankle inversion torque at heel-strike and during swing-phase follow through was analyzed in cadaver simulations. Heel-strike was simulated using a 5 degrees of freedom rig in a material testing machine. A set-up capable of accelerating lower limb specimens towards a support surface simulated swing-phase follow through. Joint excursions were monitored with…
