A review of latrine front-end characteristics associated with microbial infection risk; reveals a lack of pathogen density data.

Unsafe sanitation accounts for an estimated 898,000 global deaths annually. The faecal pathogen transmission pathway is complex with several possible routes. Latrine front-end characteristics and usage behaviours are one key transmission pathway for microbial pathogens, however, there has not yet been a synthesis of the available research. This review aims to compare the microbial infection risks with latrine front-end components including any quantified microbial densities within the household latrines. This review was conducted with no restriction on the geographical location of the research

First record of molecular and pathological investigations of physalopterid larvae infection in northern palm squirrel Funambulus pennantii.

Around 100 reported species of Physaloptera commonly infect mammals, reptiles, birds, and amphibians. The identification of Physaloptera species solely on morphological characteristics is difficult, especially in the case of larval and congeneric infections. The present study is an attempt to identify molecularly and to perform phylogeny and pathology of natural Physaloptera larval infection in northern palm squirrels. The molecular confirmation of the recovered parasitic stages was performed by targeting the nuclear 18S rRNA gene sequence. Phylogenetic analysis and evolutionary divergence of

Schistosome and intestinal helminth modulation of macrophage immunometabolism.

Macrophages are fundamental to sustain physiological equilibrium and to regulate the pathogenesis of parasitic and metabolic processes. The functional heterogeneity and immune responses of macrophages are shaped by cellular metabolism in response to the host's intrinsic factors, environmental cues and other stimuli during disease. Parasite infections induce a complex cascade of cytokines and metabolites that profoundly remodel the metabolic status of macrophages. In particular, helminths polarize macrophages to an M2 state and induce a metabolic shift towards reliance on oxidative phosphorylat

Microbes, helminths, and rheumatic diseases.

There has been a progressive interest on modifications of the human defense system following insults occurring in the interface between our body and the external environment, as they may provoke or worsen disease states. Studies suggest that billions of germs, which compose the gut microbiota influence one's innate and adaptive immune responses at the intestinal level, but these microorganisms may also impact rheumatic diseases. The microbiota of the skin, respiratory, and urinary tracts may also be relevant in rheumatology. Evidence indicates that changes in the gut microbiome alter the patho

Macrophages assemble! But do they need IL-4R during schistosomiasis?

Helminth infections are a global health burden in humans and livestock and are considered to be a major evolutionary driver of type 2 immunity (orchestrated by type 2 cytokines, e.g., IL-4 and IL-13). Upon infection, helminths cause substantial damage to mucosal tissues as they migrate within the host and elicit crucial protective immune mechanisms. Macrophages, essential innate cells, are known to adopt a specific activation status (termed M(IL-4)) in type 2 cytokine environments. Yet, the role of these macrophages in mediating protective immune/wound healing responses to helminths is unclear

Human hookworm infection: Is effective control possible? A review of hookworm control efforts and future directions.

Human hookworm, a soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infection caused by either Necator americanus or Anclystoma duodenale, is a major cause of morbidity globally and predominantly affects the world's poorest populations. Transmitted primarily by larval invasion of exposed skin, the adults inhabit the host small intestine, where they consume host blood. The resultant chronic iron deficiency anemia can lead to stunted growth and cognitive deficits in children, reduced work capacity in adults, and a variety of pregnancy complications. Historically, successful STH elimination has only been achieved

New Perspectives in Equine Intestinal Parasitic Disease: Insights in Monitoring Helminth Infections.

Regular anthelmintic treatment has contributed to anthelmintic resistance in horse helminths. This mass anthelmintic treatment was originally developed owing to a lack of larvicidal drugs against Strongylus vulgaris. The high prevalence of anthelmintic resistance and shortening of strongyle egg reappearance period after avermectins/moxidectins requires epidemiologically appropriate and sustainable measures. Selective anthelmintic treatment is a much-needed deworming approach: More than 50% of adult horses manifest no strongyle egg excretion. In this article, selective anthelmintic treatment pr

Helminths of European smelt Osmerus eperlanus (Linnaeus, 1758) in Lake Hańcza and the Vistula Lagoon, with special regard to their zoonotic threats.

Reports published in recent years on the increased risk in the Baltic Sea of fish infection with larvae of nematodes potentially pathogenic to humans have prompted a study of European smelt Osmerus eperlanus with respect to the presence of these parasites in the Vistula Lagoon. Additionally, samples of this fish from Lake Hańcza were comparatively considered. The body cavity, the surface of internal organs, the alimentary tract and the swimbladder of fish from two environmentally different water bodies were taken into account in the analysis. Only the tapeworm Proteocephalus longicollis was fo

PARASITOLOGICAL STUDIES ON SOME INTESTINAL PARASITES IN PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN IN ASWAN GOVERNORATE, EGYPT.

This cross sectional study in Aswan Governorate determined the prevalence of intestinal parasites and to identify the risk factors for infection in primary school children in this geographical area. The results would facilitate evaluation of the endemic level of different intestinal parasites and the determination of whether wiqespread or focal measures of parasite control are required. After obtaining official permission from the school administration, information and consent forms were given to the parents of all the schoolchildren. They were three-hundreds children aged between 6-12 year we

Malaria endemicity and co-infection with tissue-dwelling parasites in Sub-Saharan Africa: a review.

Mechanisms and outcomes of host-parasite interactions during malaria co-infections with gastrointestinal helminths are reasonably understood. In contrast, very little is known about such mechanisms in cases of malaria co-infections with tissue-dwelling parasites. This is lack of knowledge is exacerbated by misdiagnosis, lack of pathognomonic clinical signs and the chronic nature of tissue-dwelling helminthic infections. A good understanding of the implications of tissue-dwelling parasitic co-infections with malaria will contribute towards the improvement of the control and management of such c

[Taenia martis (Cestoda, Taeniidae) from vertebrates in the Republic of Belarus].

Infestation of vertebrate animals with the cestode Taenia martis and its larvae was investigated in south-west Belarus during 2001-2008. Obligatory definitive host (common marten) and intermediate hosts (red-backed vole, yellow-necked mouse, striped field mouse, and red squirrel) of this helminth were established for the Republic of Belarus. Description and figure of the T. martis larva is given.

Ocular manifestations of systemic disease: ocular parasitosis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To highlight recent advances in basic research, diagnostic as well as therapeutic advances in ocular parasitosis and to evaluate their application in medical practice. RECENT FINDINGS: Knowledge relating to immunoreactivity in ocular parasitology has grown impressively in past few years. The outcome of infection is the result of a set of interactions involving host and parasite genetic background, environmental and social factors. Immunopathogenesis of parasite-mediated host cell lysis is better understood. Studies on newer drugs with cophylogenetic techniques are in horizo

Helminths and allergy: the example of tropomyosin.

Parasitic worms contain potent allergens, but epidemiological and experimental studies suggest that infections with certain helminths are negatively associated with the prevalence of allergic diseases. This seeming contradiction can be addressed by using filarial tropomyosin as an example. This protein shares structural features and crossreacting B-cell epitopes with other highly allergenic invertebrate tropomyosins. Nevertheless, it usually does not provoke allergic disease in infected individuals. In addition, it is one of the most prominent candidates for an anti-nematode vaccine. Recent da

Effect of climatic warming on the Pacific walrus, and potential modification of its helminth fauna.

The decreasing extent of sea-ice in the arctic basin as a consequence of climatic warming is modifying the behavior and diets of pagophilic pinnipeds, including the Pacific walrus, Odobenus rosmarus divergens Illiger, the species emphasized here. Mammals such as the walrus and bearded seal, Erignathus barbatus (Erxleben), cannot remain associated with the sea-ice, and continue to feed on their usual diet of benthic invertebrates inhabiting coastal waters to a depth of approximately 100 m, when the northwestward retreating ice reaches deep waters beyond the margins of the continental shelf. Biology of the phylum nematomorpha.

Compared with most animal phyla, the Nematomorpha, also known as hair worms, is a relatively understudied metazoan phylum. Although nematomorphs make up only 1 of 3 animal phyla specializing solely on a parasitic life style, little attention has been focused on this enigmatic group scientifically. The phylum contains two main groups. The nectonematids are parasites of marine invertebrates such as hermit crabs. The gordiids are parasites of terrestrial arthropods, such as mantids, beetles, and crickets. Members of both of these groups are free-living as adults in marine and freshwaters respecti
