OBJECTIVE: The intrauterine balloon (Balloon) has recently been widely used to achieve hemostasis for postpartum hemorrhage (PPH). We concomitantly used a novel method, "holding the cervix", with the Balloon to prevent Balloon prolapse and achieve hemostasis. BACKGROUND: Uncontrolled hemorrhage remains one of the most challenging problems facing emergency medical professionals and a leading cause of traumatic death in both battlefield and civilian environments. Survival is determined by the ability to rapidly control hemorrhage. Several commercially available topical adjunct agents have been shown to be effective in controlling hemorrhage, and one, Combat Gauze (CG), is used regularly on the battlefield and for civilian applications. PURPOSE: Laparoscopic salpingotomy has become the gold standard for the treatment of tubal ectopic pregnancy (TEP). Limitations for organ preservation in TEP can result from intra-operative bleeding or potential tubal damage due to application of thermal coagulation. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Absorbable gelatin-thrombin matrix is increasingly being used in neurosurgical procedures; unlike other hemostats, the stable matrix is left undisturbed and fills the surgical bed after achieving hemostasis. We investigated the immediate postoperative radiographic imaging appearance of the gelatin-thrombin matrix in intracranial operative beds.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-one consecutive patients (18 men, 13 women; mean age, 59 years) with 34 surgical cavities, had 31 brain MRIs and 9 head CTs performed ≤ 48 hours postoperatively. They were retrospectively reviewed.

Troublesome bleeding occurred in the posterior portion of the proximal anastomosis in an ascending aorta graft, being performed on a patient with acute type A dissection. The suture line was close to the left coronary ostium, and attempts at suturing and other maneuvers failed to control hemorrhage. Modified rapid deployment hemostat (MRDH) was successful in achieving hemostasis. MRDH is a novel hemostatic agent with invaluable use in troublesome bleeding occurring during heart surgery.
