The cardiovascular branch of autonomic nervous system (ANS) is responsible for the regulation of heart rate, blood pressure, and maintaining homeostasis during physiological stress such as exercise and standing upright. ANS constantly controls the rate and force of heart contractions and the vascular tone with the aim to maintain the sufficient tissue perfusion with oxygenated blood and secure venous return to the heart. Dysautonomias, result of ANS malfunction, are often found in patients with cardiovascular symptoms. Apart from the most prevalent one, arterial hypertension, the cardiovascula

The main goal of this study was to compare the impact of total body leptin deficiency with neuronal-specific leptin receptor (LR) deletion on metabolic and cardiovascular regulation. Liver fat, diacylglycerol acyltransferase-2 (DGTA2), and CD36 protein content were measured in wild-type (WT), nervous system LR-deficient (LR/Nestin-Cre), and leptin deficient (ob/ob) mice. Blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) were recorded by telemetry, and motor activity (MA) and oxygen consumption (V̇o2) were monitored at 24 wk of age. Female and male LR/Nestin-Cre and ob/ob mice were heavier than WT mice (

1. Among patients with SLE, 71 (51%) had significant neuropsychiatric problems during the course of the disease. In 52 (37%), the nervous system manifestations were secondary to SLE. 2. The most frequent manifestations were psychiatric dysfunction, seizures, long tract signs, cranial neuropathy, and peripheral neuropathy. 3. Psychiatric abnormalities secondary to SLE were characterized by organic features (present in 22 of 24) and by the association of neurologic lesions which were often diffuse or multifocal. 4. An abnormal cerebrospinal fluid was found in 32% of neuropsychiatric episodes in

Neuroangiostrongyliasis is a neuroinvasive helminth infection caused primarily by the rat lungworm Angiostrongylus cantonensis, which is the main causative agent of eosinophilic meningitis in humans. The closely related species Angiostrongylus malaysiensis coexists in many endemic regions particularly in Asia and Oceania and shares substantial morphological and genetic similarity with A. cantonensis, yet its pathogenic potential remains poorly understood. Here, we performed a direct comparative investigation of neuropathogenesis and host immune responses following experimental infection with A

The gut-brain axis is a bidirectional communication network connecting the gastrointestinal tract and central nervous system. The axis keeps track of gastrointestinal activities and integrates them to connect gut health to higher cognitive parts of the brain. Disruption in this connection may facilitate various neurological and gastrointestinal problems. Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by the progressive dysfunction of specific populations of neurons, determining clinical presentation. Misfolded protein aggregates that cause cellular toxicity and that aid in the collapse of cellul

The experiment investigated the effect of light wavelength upon salivary secretion and cutaneous temperature of the foot in humans. Seven healthy young female students served as participants. They spent three nights in a bioclimatic chamber controlled at 26 degrees C and 60%. Participants were exposed to two different wavelengths of light from 1800 to 2400 h on second day and third day: 1) Fluorescent light (FL) with short wavelengths and a high color temperature (6,500 K); 2) Incandescent light (IL) with long wavelengths and a low color temperature (3,000 K). Light intensity was 400 lx in bot

Raynaud's phenomenon has been considered to be due to activation of the central sympathetic vasoconstrictor reflex, and may represent part of a larger dysfunction of higher autonomic centers. Symptoms, such as sweating disturbances, orthostatic hypotension, insomnia and impotence have been reported to be more common among vibration exposed workers. We studied 217 male forest workers and selected samples of this population for electromyographic (N = 80), autonomic nervous system function, controlled breathing, tilting bed and valsalva manoeuvre (N = 88) tests, and a full clinical neurological e

BACKGROUND: Recent works provide evidence of the importance of the prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) metabolic pathway in inflammatory bowel diseases. We investigated the expression of PGD2 metabolic pathway actors in Crohn's disease (CD) and the ability of the enteric nervous system (ENS) to produce PGD2 in inflammatory conditions.
METHODS: Expression of key actors involved in the PGD2 metabolic pathway and its receptors was analyzed using quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) in colonic mucosal biopsies of patients from three groups: controls, quiescent and active CD

UNLABELLED: Pseudorabies virus (PRV), a member of the alpha-herpesviruses, can infect both the nervous and reproductive systems of pigs, causing neonatal mortality and reproductive failure in sows, which incurs substantial economic losses. Neurotropism is a common characteristic of various viruses, allowing them to cross the blood-brain barrier and access the central nervous system. However, the precise mechanisms by which PRV affects the blood-brain barrier are not well understood. To investigate the mechanism of PRV's interaction with the blood-brain barrier and its engagement with the PI3K/

BACKGROUND: Although glucagon-like peptide 1- (GLP-1-) based therapy of hyperglycemia in burn injury has shown great potential in clinical trials, its safety is seldom evaluated. We hypothesize that exendin-4, a GLP-1 analogue, might affect the immune response via the activation of the sympathetic nervous system in burn injury.
METHODS: Male Balb/c mice were subjected to sham or thermal injury of 15% total body surface area. Exendin-4 on T cell function in vitro was examined in cultured splenocytes in the presence of β-adrenoceptor antagonist propranolol (1 nmol/L) or GLP-1R antagonist exendi

Hand transplantation has been successful in restoring function in a select group of people, but the mechanisms by which the central nervous system integrates a new hand are unknown. We used event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to assess brain activation related to actual and imagined hand movement, for a recipient (female, 60 years of age) of bilateral hand transplants. Investigation of a patient-specific network of sensorimotor cortical regions was conducted at a preoperative session, as well as at three assessments conducted over a 16-month, post-transplantation period.

This study investigated the physiological and psychological effects of sanitary napkins (SN) on women in hemorrhage treatment during the menstrual phase. Mesh and non-woven napkins were employed, and the effects were studied during the follicular and menstrual phases; mesh SN presented a higher textural surface-roughness. In both phases, the increases in systolic and diastolic blood pressure were significantly dependent on the application intervals. The low-frequency component of systolic blood pressure variability significantly increased, while the salivary secretion rate decreased with the u

Neuro-neutrophilic diseases are multisystem inflammatory disorders that include neuro-Behçet and neuro-Sweet disease. These disorders ectopically damage the nervous system due to the abnormal chemotaxis of neutrophils. The neutrophils' chemotaxis is induced by oral muco-cutaneous bacterial infections and the dysregulation of cytokines, including interleukins. The frequencies of human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-B51 in neuro-Behçet disease and HLA-B54 as well as Cw1 in neuro-Sweet disease significantly higher than the levels present in Japanese normal controls. Notably, their frequencies are also h

Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) and multiple sclerosis (MS) are two of the autoimmune inflammatory demyelinating diseases in the central nervous system. Complement is thought to have an important role in pathogenesis of these diseases, especially in NMO. However, the change of terminal complement complex (TCC, C5b-9) in patients with NMO is still unclear. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) C3a, C5a, sC5b-9 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in patients with NMO (n = 26), MS (n = 25) and other neurological disease (OND, n = 19). CSF levels of C5a in patients with NMO were higher than patients
