PURPOSE: Gymnastics performances entail complex and extensive movements that require specific body morphology, strength, and flexibility that may lead to hip and lumbar-spine injuries. The present study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of hip and lumbar-spine pain and their associated physiological characteristics in young gymnasts.
METHODS: Two hundred seventy-four female rhythmic, acrobatic, and artistic gymnasts age 9 to 16 years were physically examined for hip and lumbar-spine pain and reported pain experienced during training on a visual analog scale. In addition, gymnasts were assessed

INTRODUCTION: The lower quarter Y-balance test (YBT-LQ), which measures dynamic postural control, has been reported to be predictive of lower limb injuries in athletes. It requires subjects to control their body while maintaining a single-leg stance, which necessitates sufficient strength of the hip muscles to maintain stability. The purpose of the study was to investigate the correlation between the performance of the YBT-LQ and the hip abductor or extensor muscle strength in athletes following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery (ACLR).
METHODS: Fifteen athletes with post-ACLR

Hip pain is a common paediatric presentation and is potentially serious. While hip pain can be attributed to primary hip pathology, the hip area is also a common site for referred pain. This often poses a diagnostic challenge particularly in the young child who may not verbalise the point of pain and may not report an injury. Differential diagnoses for paediatric hip joint pain range from fracture, transient synovitis, septic arthritis with or without osteomyelitis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA, previously juvenile rheumatoid arthritis JRA), Legg-Calve-Perthes' disease (LCP), slipped cap

Hip preservation is one of the fastest growing fields in orthopaedics and indications of intra-articular procedures are well established. In the last decade, extra-articular procedures have gained momentum and arthroscopic solutions to peri-articular hip pathologies have been offered. It should be noted that many of these pathologies are well-treated conservatively and only those who fail conservative management should be treated operatively. These indications can be divided into 5 categories: greater trochanteric pain syndrome; internal hip snapping; anterior inferior iliac spine/sub-spine im

UNLABELLED: Our purpose is to describe the evolving indications, technical pearls and contraindications for hip arthroscopy. Although traditional clinical and radiographic measures may identify structural abnormalities or fracture or the hip, recently developed arthroscopic access to the joint has provided new ways of viewing lesions of the labrum, chondral surfaces, and synovium that previously were unrecognized. Development of hip-specific distraction equipment and instruments has allowed treatment of many conditions, especially loose bodies and labral and chondral injuries. In the senior au

BACKGROUND: Little research has examined the rates and patterns of hip flexor or hip adductor strains in student-athletes in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
PURPOSE: To describe the epidemiology of hip flexor and adductor strains in NCAA athletes during the 2009/2010-2014/2015 academic years.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiology study.
METHODS: Rates and patterns of hip flexor and adductor strains in collegiate sports were examined in a convenience sample of NCAA varsity teams from 25 sports. Rates and distributions of strains by mechanism, recurrence, and participati

INTRODUCTION: Musculoskeletal injuries (MSKi) are a burden on military, first responder, and health care personnel. Military and emergency services populations are often grouped together in research, but direct comparison of physical fitness or injuries of these groups has not been conducted for females. Moreover, interactions among parity status, occupation, and injury history with respect to physical fitness have not been explored.
METHODS: Fifty-seven female firefighters, paramedics, law enforcement officers, or health care providers (non-military [NM]) and 90 female Canadian Armed Forces

Sports-related injuries increase healthcare cost burden, and in some instances have harmful long term physical and psychological implications. There is currently a lack of comprehensive data on temporal injury trends across professional North American sports. The purpose of this study was to compare temporal trends, according to incidence and time-loss injuries, by body part in professional baseball, basketball, football, and ice hockey. Public injury data from Major League Baseball, National Basketball Association, National Football League, and National Hockey League from 2007 to December 201

OBJECTIVES: To profile professional rugby union players using longitudinal hip, groin and hamstring strength measures and identify characteristics associated with non-contact lower limb injury and reinjury.
DESIGN: Prospective cohort study.
METHODS: 248 players were involved in the study. Over 24 months, injury surveillance data was collected, and a battery of strength tests were conducted at the start of each pre-season and mid-season. The strength tests included: Nordic hamstring exercise (Nordic); hip abduction and adduction at 60° (ABD60, ADD60); and 90° of hip flexion (ABD90 and ADD90).

The implantation of a bipolar partial hip endoprosthesis is a treatment of choice for displaced medial femoral neck fracture. We present an experimental study which asses and compare biomechanical and clinical status through period before and after hip fracture and implantation of bipolar partial hip endoprosthesis. This study encompassed 75 patients who suffered from an acute medial femoral neck fracture and were treated with the implantation of a bipolar partial hip endoprosthesis. Their biomechanical status (stress distribution on the hip joint weight bearing area) and clinical status (Harr

BACKGROUND: The important purpose of a powered gait orthosis is to provide active joint movement for patients with spinal cord injury.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to clarify the effect of a powered gait orthosis on the kinematics and temporal-spatial parameters in paraplegics with spinal cord injury.
STUDY DESIGN: Quasi-experimental.
METHODS: Four spinal cord injury individuals experienced gait training with a powered gait orthosis for a minimum of 6 weeks prior to participating in the following walking trials: walking with an isocentric reciprocating gait orthosis and walking wit

Excessive pronation has been implicated in the development of numerous overuse injuries of the lower limb and is suggested to cause more proximal biomechanical dysfunction. Functional foot orthoses (FFO) are frequently prescribed for lower limb injury associated with excessive foot pronation and have been demonstrated to have efficacy with specific conditions. However, the mechanism of action of FFO is largely unknown. Research investigating the kinematic and kinetic changes associated with FFO use is inconclusive. Furthermore there is a growing body of evidence suggesting that changes to musc

BACKGROUND: This work was carried out to evaluate the clinical efficacy and the complications of S-ROM modular hip arthroplasty combined with transverse subtrochanteric shortening for Crowe type IV congenital dislocation of the hip (CDH).
METHODS: A total of 28 consecutive patients with Crowe type IV CDH received treatment using this surgical technique from June 2003 to June 2010. The follow-up was conducted at 3 days, 1, 6, and 12 months after the operation and later annually at the outpatient of our hospital. Sequential pelvic plain film and normotopia film of the affected hip joint were ta
