Trichotillomania in sexual minority individuals.

BACKGROUND: Trichotillomania is a common psychiatric disorder, but little is known about whether or how it differs in people with minority sexual identities. We sought to understand whether lesbian, gay, bisexual, and other individuals differ from heterosexual individuals in terms of hair pulling and associated characteristics. METHODS: A total of 207 participants age 18 to 64 with trichotillomania undertook clinical evaluations. Those who identified as sexual minorities were compared to those who identified as heterosexuals on clinical measures, comorbidities, impulsivity, and stress respons

The Influence of Concerns About a Child's Sexual Orientation on Mental Health Among Parents of Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Children in Hong Kong.

Sexual minority stress affects not only lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals, but also their families. Due to the pervasiveness of stigma and discrimination, parents of LGB children often express concerns about the public perception of their child's sexual orientation and its possible impact on children, parents, and families. The concerns are particularly pertinent to parents in Chinese families, where there is a strong bond between parents and children. The present study seeks to understand the different dimensions of concerns among Chinese parents of LGB children and examine how the

Sexual Victimization in the Digital Age: A Population-Based Study of Physical and Image-Based Sexual Abuse Among Adolescents.

Adolescents increasingly use social media platforms, and these practices open up new forms of sexual victimization, in particular image-based sexual abuse (IBSA). Few studies have examined prevalence rates and correlates of both physical sexual victimization (PSV) and these new forms of victimization in representative samples. We used data from 5,245 adolescent girls (53%) and 4,580 adolescent boys (47%) from the population-based Young in Oslo Study (mean age 17.1 years, SD = 0.9). Of all respondents, 2.9% had experienced IBSA, 4.3% PSV, and 1.7% both IBSA and PSV in the course of the previous

Minority stress theory applied to conception, pregnancy, and pregnancy loss: A qualitative study examining LGBTQ+ people's experiences.

Many lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (trans), queer, and other sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ+) people desire to conceive children. Yet, LGBTQ+ peoples' experiences are scant in reproductive health literature, particularly around pregnancy loss-a stigmatized and distressing pregnancy outcome. Informed by minority stress theory, this qualitative study aimed to explore the experiences of multi-level stigma and resilience among LGBTQ+ people in the context of conception, pregnancy, and loss. Seventeen semi-structured individual interviews (25-70 minutes) were conducted (2019) with a purpos

Queen of Fights: Lesbians in Tunisian Sports.

Sport within the Muslim context, including in the location of this study, Tunisia, remains an institution designed for the promotion of a heterosexual form of masculinity and the degradation of both femininity and women's athleticism. Unlike recent advancements in the West, homosexuality remains viewed almost entirely negatively by the political, religious, and social debates in Muslim cultures. This overt hostility has almost entirely erased any visible gay culture within Muslim sports. It is within this context that this study finds importance. It represents the first-ever examination into t

Lesbian couples' views about and experiences of not being able to choose their sperm donor.

In this qualitative study, we explore how lesbian recipients view and experience the selection of their anonymous sperm donor. The study was conducted in Belgium, where fertility centres follow a legal protocol that severely restricts personal choice in donor selection. While previous studies have shown that recipients want greater control and input in the selection of their sperm donor, this was not a main concern for most women in the present study. They generally acknowledged their lack of control on the selection outcome and accepted this as part and parcel of an anonymous donation policy

Banned on Broadway but coming to a theater near you: the captive and rethinking the breadth of American anti-lesbian hostility in the 1920s and '30s.

While the 1927 Broadway closing of the lesbian-themed play The Captive has been treated as launching the homophobic culture that dominated mid-twentieth-century America, the show actually continued to play in cities around the country. It was regularly greeted by packed houses and critics who scoffed at the reaction in New York. The opposition that did emerge was often generated by publisher William Randolph Hearst, while leading civil libertarians fought against him. This demonstrates that the homophobic policies of the 1920s and '30s were not the product of a deeply homophobic society, but g

Choreographies of sperm donations: dilemmas of intimacy in lesbian couple donor conception.

Assisted conception involving donor insemination challenges cultural idioms of parenthood and family; there is now a growing body of work exploring how women and couples negotiate becoming a family in this way. But sperm donation also raises questions on the more intimate levels of sex, sexuality and sexual bodies, and these have received little sustained attention in the literature. Lesbian couples in the U.K. increasingly negotiate access to medicalised donor insemination, but many also conceive in informal arrangements with donors where they themselves negotiate proximity and contact with d

A new classification system for lesbians: the Dyke Diagnostic Manual.

There has been a long-standing need for a diagnostic manual that documents the unique pathological behaviors of lesbians. The Dyke Diagnostic Manual (DDM) is meant to supplement mainstream classification systems used to identify problematic behaviors in heterosexuals. This article presents thirteen uniquely lesbian conditions that are nowhere to be found in heterosexist diagnostic systems. The DDM may help to reduce the pain and suffering found in many lesbian relationships where one or both partners are afflicted.

Differences between lesbians and heterosexual women in disordered eating and related attitudes.

This study examined differences between lesbians and heterosexual women on disordered eating, awareness and internalization of cultural attitudes concerning thinness, and body esteem concerning weight, physical condition, and sexual attractiveness. In this community sample, lesbians exhibited higher levels of body esteem concerning sexual attractiveness and lower levels of internalization of cultural standards. No differences were found on awareness of cultural standards, disordered eating, or body esteem concerning either weight or physical condition. Implications are discussed.

Assessing HIV risk among women who have sex with women: scientific and communication issues.

Data on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) risk faced by women who have sex with women (WSW) are scarce. The biologic risk of female-to-female transmission is not known. Several surveys have reported that certain groups of WSW engage in behaviors that put them at risk for HIV infection, such as unprotected sex with men, unprotected sex or sharing of sex toys with women, and injection drug use. WSW may also be at risk for HIV through use of unscreened semen from sources other than sperm banks. An evaluation of HIV risk behaviors among WSW has been hampered by methodological issues, such as lack

Search for Healthcare and Breast/Gynecological Cancer Prevention Among Brazilian Lesbian Cisgender Women.

Although breast, cervical, endometrial, and ovarian cancers account for more than 43% of new cases in 2023 in Brazilian women, no national studies were found on the incidence, risk factors, and prevention of breast and gynecological neoplasms in lesbian women, causing the health needs of non-heterosexual women to go unnoticed by professionals. This study aims to identify and analyze the search for healthcare related to the prevention of breast/gynecological cancer among Brazilian lesbian cisgender women who have not had the disease. Seven lesbian women participated in this qualitative study. S

Neisseria gonorrhoeae multiantigen sequence typing is beneficial in further characterizing gonococcal populations in Alberta, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance testing and behavioral data combined with Neisseria gonorrhoeae multiantigen sequence typing (NG-MAST) can help to define gonococcal populations and identify, characterize, and compare clusters of infection. METHODS: Antimicrobial resistance testing, using E test, was reviewed for gonococcal isolates in Alberta, Canada, from 2007 to 2011. Antimicrobial resistance testing was conducted on isolates demonstrating antimicrobial resistance and those with cefixime minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 0.06 μg/mL or greater. Demographic and behavioral infor

The epidemiological and clinical differences between patients with mpox and patients without mpox among suspected cases during the recent global mpox outbreaks: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The recent mpox outbreaks have brought challenges to the global health system. We aimed to study the epidemiological and clinical differences between patients with mpox and patients without mpox among suspected cases during and after 2022. METHODS: This study was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. RESULTS: Our meta-analysis included a total of 22 articles regarding 12,850 suspected cases of mpox. The prevalence of mpox was 54%. We found that the proportion of men among the mpox patients was much

HIV Incidence, Migration and Diagnosis Dynamics, France, 2012-2023: A Surveillance and Modeling Data Analysis.

BACKGROUND: In France, new HIV diagnoses have declined since 2012 among native-born men who have sex with men (MSM) but not among MSM or heterosexuals born abroad. We aimed to disentangle and describe trends in HIV incidence in France, migration of undiagnosed people living with HIV (PLHIV), and diagnosis delays among people born abroad. SETTING: France. METHODS: We applied a mathematical model that estimates individual-level diagnosis delay distributions and identifies likely premigration infections to surveillance data of new HIV diagnoses from France. We then applied a second model to est

Factors Associated with Having both Male and Female Recent Sexual Partnerships Among Men Who Have Sex with Men in Harare and Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.

To better understand male and female sexual partnerships among men who have sex with men (MSM), we used data from a 2019 biobehavioral survey among MSM in Harare and Bulawayo, Zimbabwe to conduct bivariate analyses and multivariable logistic regression to determine whether sociodemographic characteristics and HIV-related factors were associated with having both male and female sexual partnerships within the last 6 months. Of included MSM (N = 1143), 31% reported both male and female partnerships in the last 6 months. Being married/cohabiting (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 8.58, 95% confidence in

Disproportionate preponderance of HPV genotypes associated with anogenital warts among HIV-positive MSM.

BACKGROUND: In this study, we characterized the HPV genotype distribution in a population of 489 adults already positive for HPV DNA. The study population was divided into two groups: 244 HIV-positive (HIV+) men who have sex with men (MSM) undergoing routine anal screening for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and 245 women undergoing routine cervical cancer screening. Acknowledging the fact that women and MSM represent two independent circles of sexual practices, which are-largely-exclusive of each other, we were interested in determining if particular genotypes of human papillomavirus (HP

Estimating the lifetime risk of a false positive screening test result.

False positive results in screening tests have potentially severe psychological, medical, and financial consequences for the recipient. However, there have been few efforts to quantify how the risk of a false positive accumulates over time. We seek to fill this gap by estimating the probability that an individual who adheres to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) screening guidelines will receive at least one false positive in a lifetime. To do so, we assembled a data set of 116 studies cited by the USPSTF that report the number of true positives, false negatives, true negatives,

Interdisciplinarity in HIV prevention research: the experience of the PrEP1519 study protocol among adolescent MSM and TGW in Brazil.

At the end of 2017, Brazil adopted HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) as part of a combination prevention strategy for the most at-risk populations. However, Brazil does not have specific guidelines for PrEP use among adolescents aged < 18 years. Therefore, researchers from different health disciplines conducted PrEP1519, the first PrEP demonstration cohort study, ongoing in three Brazilian cities - Salvador, Belo Horizonte, and São Paulo - among adolescent men who have sex with men and transgender women, aged 15-19 years. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of PrEP in real-world se
