Visual latency in the spontaneous Pulfrich effect.

BACKGROUND: Interocular visual latency differences in patients with traumatic optic neuropathy due to midface injury were compared using both measurements of the delay from the spontaneous Pulfrich effect and pattern visual evoked potentials (VEPs). METHODS: Six patients with a spontaneous Pulfrich effect following midfacial injury observed a target which oscillated sinusoidally with an elliptical path in the frontal plane. The spontaneous Pulfrich delay was calculated from the size of the minor axis of the target ellipse on an XY plotter adjusted until the patient judged that no depth (i.e.

The vanishing of the sun: a manifestation of cortical plasticity.

In Monet's painting impression. Rising Sun, when one steadily fixates the image of a sailor in the center of the picture for several seconds, the solar disk progressively disappears, being replaced in both brightness and color by the surrounding sky. This "filling-in" phenomenon reflects a process of cortical remapping, similar to the one that occurs in the presence of visual field defects. Filling-in is largely ignored by clinicians, despite its major implications in ophthalmologic practice, especially the nonrecognition of visual field deficits.

Facilitating unusual bodily experiences and out-of-body experiences across wakefulness and sleep: A high-density EEG and neurophenomenology study.

Unusual bodily experiences (UBEs) are illusory bodily perceptions that are not coherent with typical wakeful experiences, including flying or floating sensations, body distortions, and out-of-body experiences. This study examines UBEs in a controlled sleep laboratory using meditation and light stimulation to facilitate their occurrence. A total of N = 35 healthy participants underwent high-density EEG, with additional EMG, EOG, and ECG recordings. Participants signalled UBEs by performing left-right-left-right eye movements, providing an objective marker for analysis. Interviews adapted from t

Resting-state neural correlates of visual Gestalt experience.

Subjective perceptual experience is influenced not only by bottom-up sensory information and experience-based top-down processes, but also by an individual's current brain state. Specifically, a previous study found increased prestimulus insula and intraparietal sulcus (IPS) activity before participants perceived an illusory Gestalt (global) compared with the non-illusory (local) interpretation of a bistable stimulus. That study provided only a snapshot of the brain state that favors the illusory interpretation. In the current study, we tested whether areas that differentiate between the illus

Apparent motion perception in lower limb amputees with phantom sensations: "obstacle shunning" and "obstacle tolerance".

Phantom limbs are the phenomenal persistence of postural and sensorimotor features of an amputated limb. Although immaterial, their characteristics can be modulated by the presence of physical matter. For instance, the phantom may disappear when its phenomenal space is invaded by objects ("obstacle shunning"). Alternatively, "obstacle tolerance" occurs when the phantom is not limited by the law of impenetrability and co-exists with physical objects. Here we examined the link between this under-investigated aspect of phantom limbs and apparent motion perception. The illusion of apparent motion

Visual impressions of pushing and pulling: the object perceived as causal is not always the one that moves first.

Stimuli were presented in which a moving object (A) contacted a stationary object (B), whereupon both objects moved back in the direction from which object A had come. When object B rapidly decelerated to a standstill, so that the two objects did not remain in contact, object B was perceived as pushing object A. Thus, even though object B only moved when contacted by object A, it was perceived as the causal object, as making something happen to object A. This is contrary to the hypothesis that the object perceived as causal is always the object that moves first. It is, however, consistent with

The influence of retinal and extra-retinal motion cues on perceived object motion during self-motion.

Eye, head, and body movement are intimately linked. During self-motion, the eyes track objects by a combination of vestibular reflexes and smooth pursuit eye movements but although the world appears stable during saccadic gaze changes, it does not appear stable during physical self-motion. We determined the amount by which a fixated object needed to be moved in space in order to appear earth stationary to a linearly moving observer. Observers were oscillated sinusoidally either passively or under their own control, under lit and fully darkened conditions. The visual targets always needed to mo

Second-order motion shifts perceived position.

Many studies have documented that first-order motion influences perceived position. Here, we show that second-order (contrast defined) motion influences the perceived positions of stationary objects as well. We used a Gabor pattern as our second-order stimulus, which consisted of a drifting sinusoidal contrast modulation of a dynamic random-dot background; this second-order carrier was enveloped by a static Gaussian contrast modulation. Two vertically aligned Gabors had carrier motion in opposite directions. Subjects judged the relative positions of the Gabors' static envelopes. The positions

Neuropsychology and the self-concept.

The biological basis of the self is discussed in relation to neuropsychological findings in cases with focal brain injury. This material demonstrates that the self is deposited at an early phase in the process of object realization and distributes into the private space of imagery and the external space of object perception. A disruption or truncation of this process results in an erosion of the self that is similar across the different perceptual modalities. From the pattern of pathological breakdown, it is concluded that the self is a categorical, relational entity that achieves autonomy in

A selective history of the study of visual motion aftereffects.

The visual motion aftereffect (MAE) was initially described after observation of movements in the natural environment, like those seen in rivers and waterfalls: stationary objects appeared to move briefly in the opposite direction. In the second half of the nineteenth century the MAE was displaced into the laboratory for experimental enquiry with the aid of Plateau's spiral. Such was the interest in the phenomenon that a major review of empirical and theoretical research was written in 1911. In the latter half of the present century novel stimuli (like drifting gratings, isoluminance patterns,

Multisensory, cognitive, and motor influences on human spatial orientation in weightlessness.

Exposure to weightlessness affects the control and appreciation of body position and orientation. In free fall the perception of one's own orientation and that of the surroundings is dependent on the presence or absence of contact cues, whether part of the body is visible in relation to the architecturally defined verticals of the space craft, cognitive factors, and exposure history. Sensations of falling are not elicited in free fall when the eyes are closed or the visual field is stabilized. This indicates that visual and cognitive factors as well as vestibular ones must be implicated in the

User Experience of Virtual Human and Immersive Virtual Reality Role-Playing in Psychological Testing and Assessment: A Case Study of 'EmpathyVR'.

Recent immersive virtual reality (IVR) technologies provide users with an enhanced sense of spatial and social presence by integrating various modern technologies into virtual spaces and virtual humans (VHs). Researchers and practitioners in psychology are attempting to understand the psychological processes underlying human behavior by allowing users to engage in realistic experiences within illusions enabled by IVR technologies. This study examined the user experience of role-playing with VHs in the context of IVR-based psychological testing and assessment (PTA) with a focus on EmpathyVR, an…

Differences in early and late pattern-onset visual-evoked potentials between self- reported migraineurs and controls.

Striped patterns have been shown to induce strong visual illusions and discomforts to migraineurs in previous literature. Previous research has suggested that these unusual visual symptoms to be linked with the hyperactivity on the visual cortex of migraine sufferers. The present study searched for evidence supporting this hypothesis by comparing the visual evoked potentials (VEPs) elicited by striped patterns of specific spatial frequencies (0.5, 3, and 13 cycles-per-degree) between a group of 29 migraineurs (17 with aura/12 without) and 31 non-migraineurs. In addition, VEPs to the same strip…

Colored floaters as a manifestation of digoxin toxicity.

PURPOSE: Since its report in one patient more than 70 years ago, digitalis-induced colored muscae volitantes have not surfaced again in the … ur in patients taking cardiac glycosides but this association has not been explored. Unlike optical illusions and visual hallucinations, floaters are entoptic phenomena casting a physical shadow upon the retina and their coloring likely arise from retinal dysfunction. Colored floaters may be a more common visual phenomenon than realized.

Post-stroke psychosis: how long should we treat?

OBJECTIVE:: To describe a rare case of a patient who developed psychotic symptoms after a right stroke that disappeared with antipsychotic treatment, but appears to need low-dose maintenance antipsychotic therapy. CASE DESCRIPTION:: A 65-year-old man presented at the psychiatric emergency service with a history of persistent delusional jealousy, visual illusions and agitation with onset about 1 month after a right posterior cerebral artery ischemic stroke. These symptoms only disappeared with therapeutic dosages of an antipsychotic drug (3 mg/day of risperidone). At 2-year follow-up, he no lo…
