Neural correlation between swallowing motor imagery and execution: an EEG analysis.

Objective. The relationship between swallowing motor imagery (MI) and actual swallowing remains unclear, leading to a lack of physiological basis for the application of swallowing imagery-based brain-computer interface (BCI) paradigms in rehabilitation. This research explored the link between swallowing execution and imagery, aiming to optimize BCI applications for swallowing rehabilitation in patients with dysphagia.Approach.Thirty healthy participants performed swallowing MI and saliva swallowing tasks under video cues, and electroencephalography (EEG) signals from 64 channels and electromyog

E2T: EEG-to-Trajectory Transformer for Motor Imagery-Based Fully-DoF Motion Prediction.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) using electroencephalography (EEG) enable non-invasive, real-time interaction for individuals with motor impairments by decoding neural signals associated with movement intention. Although traditional classification-based motor imagery (MI) BCIs translate discrete EEG patterns into predefined commands, such approaches inherently lack the flexibility required for continuous and naturalistic movement control. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel EEG-based decoding framework that directly predicts continuous 3D upper limb trajectories using a hybrid d

A Multimodal fNIRS-EEG Dataset for Unilateral Limb Motor Imagery.

Unilateral limb motor imagery (MI) plays an important role in upper-limb motor rehabilitation and precise control of external devices, and places higher demands on spatial resolution. However, most existing public datasets focus on binary- or four-class left-right limb paradigms that mainly exploit coarse hemispheric lateralization, and there is still a lack of multimodal datasets that simultaneously record electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) for unilateral multi-directional MI. To address this gap, we present MIND, a public motor imagery fNIRS-EEG da

A comparative analysis of the utilization of upper and lower extremity functions in mental chronometry tests in individuals with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Mental chronometry tests, including upper and lower extremity functions, evaluate the temporal congruence component of motor imagery. This study aimed to compare the utilization of upper and lower extremity functions in mental chronometry tests. METHODS: This study included 70 individuals with multiple sclerosis and was designed based on an a priori power analysis. Mental chronometry tests, including the Box and Block Test (BBT) and the Timed Up and Go Test (TUG), were administered, and execution times, motor imagery times, and mental chronometry ratios were compared between the m

A Synergy of Convolutional Neural Networks for Sensor-Based EEG Brain-Computer Interfaces to Enhance Motor Imagery Classification.

Enhancing motor disability assessment and its imagery classification is a significant concern in contemporary medical practice, necessitating reliable solutions to improve patient outcomes. One promising avenue is the use of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), which establish a direct communication pathway between users and machines. This technology holds the potential to revolutionize human-machine interaction, especially for individuals diagnosed with motor disabilities. Despite this promise, extracting reliable control signals from noisy brain data remains a critical challenge. In this paper,

The effect of combining motor imagery and electrical stimulation on improving performance in a force tracking task.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate whether combining motor imagery (MI) and peripheral electrical stimulation (ES) enhances motor performance more effectively than MI alone, as literature on this is lacking. METHODS: Participants executed a wrist flexion tracking task with performance measured by error areas pre-practice, immediately post-practice (Post1), and 20 min post-practice (Post2). ES was applied at two intensities: above the motor threshold (ES-MT) and below the motor threshold but above the sensory threshold (ES-ST). In Experiment 1, 29 healthy participants were assigned to six

Both sides now: visual perspective switching in episodic future thought and its relationship to dissociation.

Visual perspective in episodic memory and future thinking is conventionally treated as a one-dimensional construct, with first- and third-person perspectives at two poles of a continuum. However, given the opportunity, individuals often ascribe both of these perspectives to their imagery of a single event. In the present study, we found that "dual-perspective" imagery (involving switching between first- and third-person perspectives) is slightly more common than third-person imagery and is associated with higher self-reported ratings of centrality (importance in an individual's life story) and

Boosted Harris Hawks Shuffled Shepherd Optimization Augmented Deep Learning based motor imagery classification for brain computer interface.

Motor imagery (MI) classification has been commonly employed in making brain-computer interfaces (BCI) to manage the outside tools as a substitute neural muscular path. Effectual MI classification in BCI improves communication and mobility for people with a breakdown or motor damage, delivering a bridge between the brain's intentions and exterior actions. Employing electroencephalography (EEG) or aggressive neural recordings, machine learning (ML) methods are used to interpret patterns of brain action linked with motor image tasks. These models frequently depend upon models like support vector

Recognition of unilateral lower limb movement based on EEG signals with ERP-PCA analysis.

It has been confirmed that motor imagery (MI) and motor execution (ME) share a subset of mechanisms underlying motor cognition. In contrast to the well-studied laterality of upper limb movement, the laterality hypothesis of lower limb movement also exists, but it needs to be characterized by further investigation. This study used electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings of 27 subjects to compare the effects of bilateral lower limb movement in the MI and ME paradigms. Event-related potential (ERP) recorded was decomposed into meaningful and useful representatives of the electrophysiological com

Hypomanic-like experiences and spontaneous emotional mental imagery.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar spectrum disorders (BPSD) are associated with frequent and emotional mental imagery, theorized to play a role in mood instability. However, we lack methods for measuring tendency to experience emotional mental imagery in daily life. The current study developed such a measure and evaluated the hypothesis that a high tendency to experience emotional imagery in daily life would be associated with higher levels of hypomanic-like experiences. METHODS: We conducted two rounds of studies to develop and refine a measure of spontaneous emotional imagery (E-SUIS) using factor analys

Science beyond boundary: are premature discoveries things of the past?

Mendel's name more than of any other draws our attention to the personal side in terms of success and failure in science. Mendel lived 19 years after presenting his research findings and died without receiving any recognition for his work. Are premature discoveries things of the past, you may ask? I review the material basis of science in terms of science boundary and field accessibility and analyze the possibility of premature discoveries in different fields of science such as, for example, physics and biology. I conclude that science has reached a stage where progress is being made mostly by

Amnesia as an impairment of detail generation and binding: evidence from personal, fictional, and semantic narratives in K.C.

Autobiographical episodic recall involves active simultaneous generation and binding of various elements that were present during the initial experience. Deficits in this reconstructive process may account for some aspects of retrograde amnesia (RA) for personally experienced events. Constructive and reconstructive processes may involve similar mechanisms. If so, patients with extensive anterograde amnesia (AA) and RA should show deficits in non-recollective cognitive domains, such as imagining events that had never been experienced and recounting non-personal narratives, that presumably rely

Hyperventilation beyond fight/flight: respiratory responses during emotional imagery.

Hyperventilation (HV) is often considered part of a defense response, implying an unpleasant emotion (negative valence) combined with a strong action tendency (high arousal). In this study, we investigated the importance of arousal and valence as triggers for HV responses. Forty women imagined eight different scripts varying along the arousal and valence dimensions. The scripts depicted relaxation, fear, depressive, action, and desire situations. After each trial, the imagery was rated for valence, arousal, and vividness. FetCO2, inspiratory and expiratory time, tidal volume, and pulse rate we

Pain and fear: a bioinformational perspective on responsivity to imagery.

Cognitive processing of pain and fear information was examined using a methodology based on the bioinformational theory of emotion. Undergraduate volunteers (n = 48) participated in an imagery assessment procedure involving audio presentation of pain, fear, or pain plus fear experimental scripts. Action and neutral scripts were presented as control stimuli. Heart rate and self-reported affective judgements were assessed. Results indicated that pain scripts were rated more negatively, and were associated with feelings of less dominance than the other experimental scripts. Fear scripts elicited

Effect of immune system imagery on secretory IgA.

This study was an investigation of the effects of physiologically-oriented mental imagery on immune functioning. College students with normal medical histories were randomly selected to one of three groups. Subjects in Group 1 participated in short educational training on the production of secretory immunoglobulin A. They were then tested on salivary IgA, skin temperature, and the Profile of Mood States (POMS) before and after listening to a 17-minute tape of imagery instructions with specially composed background "entrainment" music designed to enhance imagery. Subjects in Group 2 (placebo co

Prospects for a cognitive neuropsychology of autism: Hobson's choice.

Leslie (1987b) proposed a new, metarepresentational model for the cognition of pretense. This model identified a cognitive component necessary for the normal development of a "theory of mind." In this article, the relation of the child's early affective sensitivities to this component is considered. Early affective sensitivities seem to be cognitively distinct from the metarepresentational component. Childhood autism provides an interesting opportunity to study this problem. Three theoretical possibilities for the pathogenesis of this condition are presented: (a) a basic affective disorder as

Concerning knowledge of mental states.

How does a child acquire knowledge that other people are subjects of experience, and come to differentiate amongst mental states? In this paper I review some philosophical perspectives on these matters. In order to illustrate how the arguments have contemporary relevance, I criticize the 'theory of mind' approach currently favoured by many psychologists and point out certain implications for our view of early childhood autism.
