Vaccination of animals is indicated for cattle and sheep to prevent human infections deriving from these animals and inhibit the infertility in livestock. Both phase I and phase II are available. Vaccination is successful only when animals had been vaccinated as noninfected young, i. e. calves or lambs. Corpuscular vaccines are prevalent in immunoprophylaxis of domestic animals against coxiellosis. Such vaccines consist of formalin--inactivated, purified corpuscules Coxiella burnetii in phase I or phase II suspended in isotonic saline. But only complete composition of particles Coxiella burnet

BACKGROUND: Porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) is a contagious intestinal disease caused by porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) characterized by vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, and dehydration, which has caused huge economic losses around the world. However, it is very hard to find completely valid approaches to control the transmission of PEDV. At present, vaccine immunity remains the most effective method. To better control the spread of PED and evaluate the validity of different immunization strategies, 240 PED outbreak cases from 577 swine breeding farms were collected and analyzed. The obje

The objective of this retrospective cohort study was to evaluate the association between BW at first calving and growth, health, and reproductive performance during the rearing period, as well as subsequent milk production, calving-related events, transition cow health, and culling risk in the first and second lactation in dairy cows from a single commercial dairy herd in northern Germany. The final dataset consisted of 3,891 primiparous cows that calved between 2017 and 2021, 1,894 of which were followed until their second lactation. Data were extracted from a commercial dairy herd management

Outbreaks of cattle lungworm disease (Dictyocaulus viviparus) are explosive and costly. The unpredictability of the disease often encourages farmers to apply blanket anthelmintic treatments to the herd, which impede the acquisition of immunity, increase the risk of drug resistance, and interfere with efforts to reduce anthelmintic use against ubiquitous gastrointestinal nematodes. Improving our understanding of the factors which lead to a high risk of infection with lungworm, (including climatic pressure), would support a more targeted management. We present GLOWORM-FL-DV, the first mathematic

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) Sequence Type (ST)1, Clonal Complex(CC)1, SCCmec V is one of the major Livestock-Associated (LA-) lineages in pig farming industry in Italy and is associated with pigs in other European countries. Recently, it has been increasingly detected in Italian dairy cattle herds. The aim of this study was to analyse the differences between ST1 MRSA and methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) from cattle and pig herds in Italy and Europe and human isolates. Sixty-tree animal isolates from different holdings and 20 human isolates were characterized by p

BACKGROUND: In pigs, Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) serotypes A, B and D are causative agents of pneumonia, hemorrhagic septicemia and progressive rhinitis atrophicans, respectively. In the case of bronchopneumonia in pigs, P. multocida is generally regarded as an opportunistic pathogen following predisposing infectious agents. This study was initiated by an outbreak of bronchopneumonia in gilts associated with high mortality during lactation. Objectives of this study were to characterize the P. multocida isolate and systemic humoral immunity in gilts against this pathogen.
RESULTS: Bac

BACKGROUND: Mis/disinformation has reached an epidemic level with the COVID-19 virus and can be largely attributed to the growing digitalization of information and its rapid transmission via social media. Approximately 96% of Canadians and 80% of Americans report encountering COVID-19 dis/misinformation on at least one social media site/app. COVID-19 dis/misinformation promotes scepticism and a lack of confidence in COVID-19 interventions. Black people have been disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in terms of negative impacts on their livelihoods and are also more likely to be

IMPORTANCE: Although patients with cancer are at an increased risk of infection-related complications, few studies have characterized their vulnerability to measles and mumps. Given the recent outbreaks and increased community vaccine hesitancy, understanding measles and mumps immunity within this population is vital.
OBJECTIVES: To identify a point prevalence estimate of protective measles and mumps antibodies among ambulatory patients with cancer.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this cross-sectional study, residual clinical plasma samples were obtained from consecutive patients with

Measles virus (MeV) is an aerosol-borne and one of the most contagious pathogenic viruses known. Almost every MeV infection becomes clinically manifest and can lead to serious and even fatal complications, especially under conditions of malnutrition in developing countries, where still 115,000 to 160,000 patients die from measles every year. There is no specific antiviral treatment. In addition, MeV infections cause long-lasting memory B and T cell impairment, predisposing people susceptible to opportunistic infections for years. A rare, but fatal long-term consequence of measles is subacute s

BACKGROUND: One dose of serogroup C meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV-C) at 12 months of age is the most common immunization schedule in Canada, but immunity may wane over time.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the cost-effectiveness of a booster dose at 12 years of age with either MCV-C or a quadrivalent ACYW135 meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV-4).
METHODS: A simulation model for assessing both the direct and indirect effects of vaccination was developed. Age- and serogroup-specific incidence and fatality rates were derived from Canadian surveillance data. Vaccine efficacy was estimated from da

Pertussis re-emerged in Sweden with a cumulative incidence of about 60% during the first 10 years of life, when the locally produced cellular vaccine lost its efficacy around 1970 and general vaccination was discontinued in 1979. The epidemiology, clinical features, and immunology of pertussis and a monocomponent pertussis toxoid vaccine were studied in Göteborg, Sweden. After phase 1 and 2 studies, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of pertussis toxoid (PTox), compounded with diphtheria and tetanus toxoids, was administered to 3450 children according to the Swedish schedule

In the present study, we analyzed the immune response of calves to Brucella abortus strain 19 vaccine (S19) and its association with MHC class I (BoLA-A) alleles (exons 2-3 and 4-5). Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) was used for typing of BoLA-A exon 2-3 with DdeI and TaqI restriction enzymes; and exon 4-5 with HinfI in 45 crossbred calves. The PCR-RFLP analysis revealed five BoLA-A alleles each for exon 2-3 (A10/A19, A19, A18/19, A18 and A31) and exon 4-5 (A, B, C, D and E). Immune response against B. abortus S19 was assessed at the 4th week post v

Colonization of the human nasopharyngeal tract by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis is usually asymptomatic, but life-threatening meningococcal disease with a clinical presentation of meningitis, septicemia, or more rarely, gastrointestinal symptoms, can develop. Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) can be fatal within 24 hours, but IMD is vaccine-preventable. Vaccines used to protect against IMD caused by 5 of the 6 most common serogroups (A, B, C, W, and Y) may also influence carriage prevalence in vaccinated individuals. Lower carriage among vaccinated people may reduce transmission to n

The immune system during the periparturient period is impaired. At this time the most important factor causing immune-suppression in highly productive cows is metabolic stress resulting from hormonal and metabolic fluctuations, a negative energy balance, shortage of proteins, minerals and vitamins which are required to meet the demands of the fetus as well as the onset of lactation. This stress can activate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis (HPA), which results in increase plasma corticosteroids. As a result, the cortisol concentration during the periparturient period increases by

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 vaccination has been advocated as the most effective way to curb the pandemic. But with its inequitable distribution and slow rollout, especially in low- to middle- income countries, it will still take a long time before herd immunity is achieved. Alternative measures must therefore be explored to bolster current COVID-19 vaccination efforts. In particular, the Bacille Calmette-Guerin vaccine has been studied extensively as to its proposed conferment of non-specific immunity against different infections, including COVID-19. The aim of this study, therefore, is to evaluate

OBJECTIVES: Although primarily transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitos, Zika virus (ZIKV) can also be transmitted by blood transfusion, due to the fact that some of the infected donors can establish asymptomatic viremia. ZIKV seroprevalence in Brazilian blood donors is unknown. The main reason for this gap in the knowledge originates from the difficulty in evaluating ZIKV humoral immunity due to antigenic cross-reactivity between the different Brazilian flaviviruses and, in particular, dengue virus (DENV). The objective of this study was to evaluate the anti-ZIKV IgG prevalence in blood donors

BACKGROUND: Varicella seroprevalence in healthcare workers at a tertiary care hospital in Taiwan was assessed following the inclusion of varicella zoster vaccination in the national vaccination schedule in 2004 and was made a hospital policy in 2008.
METHODS: Seroprevalence data were extracted from records of pre-employment health check-ups performed between 2008 and 2018 at a single medical center. Staff with complete medical records and anti-varicella zoster virus immunoglobulin G (VZV IgG) titers were included. Sex and age group differences in terms of geometric mean titer (GMT) were compa

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is a highly infectious RNA virus that severely affects swine herds, causing respiratory and reproductive disorders with major global economic impact. Current first-generation vaccines based on inactivated or attenuated viruses offer limited protection and may pose safety risks. Given the virus's high mutation rate and genetic variability, there is a growing need for safer and more effective vaccines. Plant molecular farming represents a promising alternative production system for second-generation subunit vaccines, offering advantages

African trypanosomiasis causes devastating effects on human populations and livestock herds in large parts of sub-Saharan Africa. Control of the disease is hampered by the lack of any efficient vaccination results in a field setting, and the severe side effects of current drug therapies. In addition, with the exception of Trypanosoma brucei gambiense infections, the diagnosis of trypanosomiasis has to rely on microscopic analysis of blood samples, as other specific tools are nonexistent. However, new developments in biotechnology, which include loop-mediated isothermal amplification as an adap

This paper reviews the causes, impact, treatment, and prevention of retained placenta (RP), metritis, and endometritis in dairy cows. The occurrence of each of these diseases largely depends on immune function in the transition period. Retained placenta affects 5-10% of calvings and greatly increases the risk of metritis and endometritis. More field studies are needed to validate criteria for treatment of metritis, but cows with at least two of RP, fever, dullness, and fetid uterine discharge appear to merit treatment with systemic antibiotics. Clinical endometritis affects 15-20% of cows at 4
