18 neonates with bacteriologically confirmed Flavobacterium meningitis and ventriculitis were treated with various antibiotic regimens, including the use of intraventricular antibiotics. Plasma concentration-time curves of pethidine and norpethidine were studied in 25 children allocated after operation to three groups to receive pethidine 1 mg kg-1 i.v., i.m. or rectally. A 32-year-old male with aluminium osteomalacia was changed from haemodialysis to chronic ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) because of vascular access problems. Bolus injections of bombesin into a lateral cerebral ventricle of conscious beagle dogs inhibited pentagastrin-stimulated gastric acid secretion from both the innervated stomach (gastric fistula) and the vagally denervated Heidenhain pouch in a dose dependent manner. A new method for the determination of carboquone (CQ) in human plasma and ascites by high performance liquid chromatography has been developed. The authors summarize clinical studies on 5-FU treatment for advanced disseminated colonic, rectal and pancreas cancers. The advantage of pushing intravenous (I.V.) injections slowly to avoid pain and using peristalt pumps for I.V. infusion are pointed out. Since the renal toxicity of 5-FU is minimal, higher doses may be envisaged which could give better results. Studies are in progress to try to determine a model for 5-FU kinetics.

The medical applications of aptamers have recently emerged. We developed an antagonistic thioaptamer (ESTA) against E-selectin. Previously, we showed that a single injection of ESTA at a dose of 100μg inhibits breast cancer metastasis in mice through the functional blockade of E-selectin. Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine has been used increasingly in immunotherapy, including treatment of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer, as an adjuvant therapy in metastatic prostate cancer and metastatic melanoma. However, systemic infection from inadvertent intravenous (instead of intravesical) injection is uncommon and can have systemic ramifications. A novel method for infecting pigs with Taenia solium using an intramuscular innoculum of oncospheres was investigated in a series of five experiments in 18 animals. The model is simple to perform, requires a minimal number of oncospheres, permits multiple infections per animal, and decreases the variation inherent in oral infection models. This intramuscular oncosphere assay (IMOA) may provide a valuable tool to evaluate therapeutic agents or potential vaccines for cysticercosis.
