Robot-Assisted Surgery Requiring an Intraoperative Transition to Laparoscopic Surgery Due to an Emergency System Shutdown: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Robot-assisted hysterectomy (RASH) for benign uterine disease has been covered by insurance in Japan since 2018. Our department introduced RASH in December 2020, and the number of procedures has increased without major complications. Herein, we report a case in which robot-assisted surgery required intraoperative conversion to conventional laparoscopy because of an unexpected robotic system shutdown. CASE REPORT A 54-year-old multiparous woman presented with hypermenorrhea and anemia caused by uterine adenomyosis. After unsuccessful conservative treatment, definitive surgical manage

Comparison of Nationwide Volumes for Five Major Gastrointestinal Surgical Procedures in Japan: Implications From Publicly Available NCD and NDB Open Data.

AIM: In Japan, the National Clinical Database (NCD), a clinician-reported registry, and the National Database of Health Insurance Claims and Specific Health Checkups of Japan Open Data (NDB Open Data), an administrative claims database, are both widely used as nationwide surgical databases, but their consistency in capturing national surgical volumes has not been systematically evaluated. METHODS: We compared publicly available data from the NCD annual surgical statistics and the NDB Open Data from 2014 to 2023. Annual case numbers were extracted for five major gastrointestinal procedures: ch

Gender-Affirming Care in Otolaryngology: A State of the Art Review.

OBJECTIVE: Otolaryngologists have provided gender-affirming care to transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) individuals for many years, but demand for these services has recently increased substantially as visibility of TGNC communities grows. Furthermore, attention to gender-affirming care in general has sharpened as TGNC individuals' access to healthcare has entered the political sphere. We sought to compile evidence regarding gender-affirming care within otolaryngology, and to review novel surgical and nonsurgical advancements for the treatment of TGNC patients. DATA SOURCES: Data were

Genital tract infection and pelvic surgery contribute to the development of endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a multifactorial disease, and inflammation is considered a core pathology. Inflammation related to genital tract infection (GTI) and surgical injury may cause endometriosis. Therefore, we investigated the incidence of endometriosis in women with a recent history of GTI, pelvic surgery, or both. Using the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort, 20- to 49-year-old women diagnosed with GTI or who underwent pelvic surgeries between 2002 and 2008 were collected and followed up for five years. After excluding women who had already been diagnosed with endomet

The safety of tranexamic acid administration in total knee arthroplasty: a population-based study from Taiwan.

Tranexamic acid is an effective treatment to reduce blood loss. We performed a retrospective observational study to evaluate safety in unilateral total knee arthroplasty. We utilised Taiwan's national health insurance database to identify relevant patients and to retrieve information on peri-operative blood transfusions and tranexamic acid administration within 60 days of follow-up. We examined changes in the rate of transfusions and adverse events with respect to tranexamic acid administration using logistic regression. We observed a total of 226,719 knee arthroplasty cases during 2010-2019.

Association of vagus nerve severance and decreased risk of subsequent type 2 diabetes in peptic ulcer patients: An Asian population cohort study.

Vagus nerve may play a role in serum glucose modulation. The complicated peptic ulcer patients (with perforation or/and bleeding) who received surgical procedures with or without vagotomy provided 2 patient populations for studying the impact of vagus nerve integrity. We assessed the risk of developing type 2 diabetes in peptic ulcer patients without and with complications by surgical treatment received in a retrospective population study using the National Health Insurance database in Taiwan.A cohort of 163,385 patients with peptic ulcer and without Helicobacter pylori infection in 2000 to 20

Rising premature menopause and variations by education level in India.

The proportion of women experiencing premature menopause is on the rise in India, particularly in the age groups of 30-39 years. Consequently, there is a need to understand the factors influencing the prevalence of premature menopausal status among women. Our study uses the data from 180,743 women gathered during the latest Indian version of the Demography Health Survey (National Family Health Survey-5). Our results suggest that close to 5% of women in rural areas and 3% of women in urban areas experience premature menopause, and this figure varies across Indian States. The regression results
