An androgen binding protein in the cyst fluid of patients with polycystic ovary syndrome.

Androgen binding proteins (ABP) have not been described in the ovary. We have studied cyst fluids from three patients with the Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and one patient with choriocarcinoma for the presence of ABP. All contained a high affinity, low capacity binding protein for dihydrotestosterone and 17beta-estradiol. Comparison of this protein with the plasma androgen binding protein (TeBG) in polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and equilibrium dialysis did not reveal any significant differences in molecular size (Kg) net charge (Yo), radius R, molecular weight (mol wt), heat stability, stero

Electrolyte metabolism of muscle in the salt-losing form of congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

The study of metabolism of muscle electrolyte in children with the salt-losing form of congenital adrenal hyperplasia reveals two types of alterations. After admission and during initial therapy with salt and desoxycorticosterone, the changes are typical of those seen in experimental animals with adrenalectomy and excessive replacement therapy. Discontinuation of the sodium supplement after three months of therapy resulted in a return of muscle electrolyte values to normal. During the period of poor growth common to these patients a different pattern was observed. Sodium and water accumulated

Nyctohemeral growth hormone levels in children with growth retardation and inflammatory bowel disease.

Short stature is a common complication of inflammatory bowel disease. Recently McCaffery, Nasr, Lawrence, and Kirsner (1970) concluded, from blood growth hormone (GH) levels obtained during insulin-hypoglycaemic provocation, that GH deficiency contributed to the retardation in growth observed in subjects with inflammatory bowel disease. Although it was not possible to eliminate the possibility of partial hypopituitarism, this study does not confirm the existence of GH deficiency in six subjects with short stature complicating inflammatory bowel disease. The nyctohemeral (night and day) serum G

Diagnosis of congenital adrenal hyperplasia by measurement of plasma 17-hydroxyprogesterone.

Measurement of plasma 17-hydroxyprogesterone by a simple competitive protein-binding assay has proved of value in the diagnosis of congenital adrenal hyperplasia due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency. Children with untreated adrenal hyperplasia had high resting levels from as early as the 6th day of life, and children treated with suppressive doses of cortisone showed a rise after adrenal stimulation with tetracosactrin. The method also promises to enhance the ease and precision with which the condition can be managed.

Induction of ovulation with the sole use of clomiphene citrate in late-onset 21-hydroxylase deficiency.

Late-onset 21-hydroxylase deficiency (21-OHD) is a congenital enzymatic defect in the glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid steroidogenic pathways. The manifestations, including hirsutism and infertility, usually occur at puberty or young adulthood. In infertile, anovulatory women with late-onset 21-OHD, the usual therapy is glucocorticoids for ovulation induction. In this case, we report the sole use of clomiphene citrate to induce ovulation in a patient with late-onset 21-OHD. A hirsute and oligomenorrheic woman was diagnosed as having polycystic ovary syndrome at age 25. Her hirsutism respon

[Hypothalamo-hypophyseal-adrenal and hypothalamo-hypophyseal-gonadal interactions in young persons with different forms of male hypogonadism].

The study includes 115 men, 17 to 26 years of age, suffering from various forms of male hypogonadism: Klinefelter's syndrome--40 patients, male Turner's syndrome--2 patients, primary hypogonadism with other etiology--14 patients, cryptorchism--12 patients, anorchidism--8 patients, secondary hypogonadism--26 patients and late puberty--13 patients. A raised hydrocortisone plasma level was found. In the anorchidism cases the basic testosterone level was the lowest one combined with the highest basic hydrocortisone level. The 24 hour rhythm of hydrocortisone secretion in Klinefelter's syndrome is
