Patient insights into empathy, compassion and self-disclosure in medical large language models: results from the IPALLM III study.

PURPOSE: Large language models (LLMs) offer promising applications in healthcare communication, including the provision of medical information and simulation of empathetic responses. However, the extent to which patients perceive such interactions as empathetic remains unclear. This study explores urological patients’ perceptions of empathy and compassion in interactions with an LLM-powered chatbot, as well as their willingness to disclose personal information. METHODS: A total of 292 patients scheduled for urological counselling interacted with a GPT-4-powered chatbot to ask questions related…

Perspective on patient and non-academic partner engagement for the responsible integration of large language models in health chatbots.

Uses of large language models (LLMs) in health chatbots are expanding into high-stakes clinical contexts, heightening the need for tools that are evidence-based, accountable, accurate, and patient-centred. This conceptual, practice-informed Perspective reflects on engaging patients and non-academic partners for the responsible integration of LLMs, grounded in the co-construction of MARVIN (for people living with HIV) and in an emerging collaboration with MIT Critical Data. Organised by the Software Development Life Cycle, we describe: conception/needs assessment with patient partners to identi…

RSReason: Remote Sensing Reasoning Segmentation via Rotation-aware Large Vision-Language Model.

Remote Sensing Referring Expression Segmentation (RSRES) has laid the groundwork for mapping natural language instructions to pixel-level segmentation in remote sensing imagery, where objects frequently occur at diverse scales, dense spatial distributions, and arbitrary orientations. However, existing approaches predominantly rely on explicit, category-driven queries, thereby limiting their ability to reason over spatial relationships, geometric properties, and both commonsense and domain-specific knowledge. To address these challenges, we introduce Remote Sensing Reasoning Segmentation (RSRea

GeneReL: a large language model-powered platform for gene regulatory relationship extraction with community curation.

Gene regulatory networks provide fundamental insights into plant biology, yet extracting structured interaction data from scientific literature remains a significant bottleneck. Traditional manual curation cannot scale to meet the demands of modern research, while automated text mining approaches struggle with the complexity of gene nomenclature and relationship classification. Large language models (LLMs) offer promising capabilities for information extraction, but integrated platforms combining LLM extraction with community validation for plant regulatory databases remain scarce. We develope…

Impact of authoritative and subjective cues on large language model reliability for clinical inquiries: an experimental study.

To determine how subjective or authoritative misinformation embedded in user prompts affects large language model (LLM) accuracy on a clinical question with a known gold-standard answer (the treatment line of aripiprazole). Five leading LLMs answered the clinical question under three prompt conditions: (1) neutral, (2) an incorrect “self-recalled” memory, and (3) an incorrect statement attributed to an authority. Each model–scenario pair was repeated ten times (250 total responses). Accuracy differences were tested with χ² and Cramér’s V, and score shifts were analyzed with van Elteren tests.

The GRACE Cycle: A General Large-Language-Model Framework for Phenotype Discovery with Unknown Cluster Number.

Phenotype discovery-the data-driven identification of clinically or biologically meaningful subgroups-is fundamental to precision medicine, but conventional clustering methods require the number of clusters K to be specified a priori and struggle with heterogeneous, multimodal, or longitudinal data. We introduce the GRACE Cycle (Generate hypothesis, Retrieve evidence, Align, Converge, Evaluate), a general large-language-model (LLM)-assisted framework for phenotype discovery in which a hypothesis, an LLM, and an evidence base are iteratively refined until they agree. The framework discovers K a
