UNLABELLED: Twin pregnancies are associated with an increased risk of congenital malformation, illness and higher incidence of newborns during labour. They are noticed to have been more frequent in Poland in recent years. Based on the hospital records we reviewed the most common facial anomaly in twins--the cleft lip and palate. OBJECTIVE: This clinical study was designed to learn the diagnosis and treatment of lip carcinoma developing in discoid lupus erythematosus.
METHODS: One hundred and eighty-one of squamous cell carcinoma of the lips treated in our department from 1980 to 1995 were retrospectively studied.
RESULTS: Ten cases of the 181 lip carcinoma (5.5%) had concomitant discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) of the vermilion border of the lower lip.
CONCLUSION: Bleomycin or radiotherapy is the best treatment for the disease.

The frequency of hypodontia (but for the third molar) was studied in a series of 600 patients with cleft lip and/or palate. The series was subdivided into three groups according to the type of facial cleft. As compared to the general normal population the occurrence of hypodontia was markedly increased in patients with clefts. The authors report a case of median cleft of the lower lip and mandible. This is rare malformation (60 cases published in the literature) with anomalies of the tongue and sometimes midline cervical cord. Cleft of the lower lip is repaired early between one and six months, but the correction of mandibular defect by bone graft will be done at the age of ten years. In this way the authors hope to preserve mandibular and teeth growth.

A 12-year-old boy suffered from a full-thickness traumatic amputation of his lower lip and chin following a horse bite. Microsurgical technique was used to reanastomose the inferior labial artery and a vein of the chin. Recurrent swelling of the lips may be due to a number of causes. A case is presented of recurrent swelling of the upper lip caused by trauma from a displaced and apically dilacerated 1. There was abnormal development of 32 which were also displaced although 123 appeared unaffected. The surgical, endodontic and orthodontic management of this problem is discussed.

A 30-year-old man with primary nodular, rapidly growing malignant melanoma of the vermilion of the lower lip is described. The tumor was excised with wide tumor-free margins and an Abbe-Estlander reconstruction was carried out.
