Cutaneous Melanoma of the Lip: A SEER Analysis of Epidemiology and Survival Outcomes With Focus on Surgery and Other Treatment Options.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Cutaneous melanoma of the lip (LM) is a rare malignancy with a low overall survival (OS). Few studies exist in the literature to aid its diagnosis and treatment. The purpose of this study was to assess the different treatment modalities by collecting cases from a single database and to provide current information on the epidemiologic characteristics of cutaneous lip melanoma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The SEER database was searched for demographic, clinical-pathological, and therapeutic characteristics. The Kaplan-Meier model was used to analyze the overall survival (OS) of the st

Hyper-IgE syndrome caused by DOCK8 mutation with a tumour-like lesion of the lip: a case report.

Autosomal recessive hyper-IgE syndrome caused by DOCK8 gene mutation is an immunodeficiency. However, the presentation of a tumour-like lesion of the lip in autosomal recessive hyper-IgE syndrome has not yet been reported. This article reports the case of a 20-year-old man with autosomal recessive hyper-IgE syndrome who presented with a tumour-like lesion of the lip, and hyperplasia and erosion of the gingiva. The clinical manifestations included coarse face and neck skin, a diffuse tumour-like lesion on the upper lip showing a reddish erosive nodular surface with yellowish-white exudation, er

Thin submental artery perforator flap for upper lip reconstruction: A case report.

Reconstruction of upper lip defects can be challenging even for experienced surgeons. In order to restore both function and morphology, the use of quality soft tissue is essential. To this effect, the most common solution is the use of local flaps, or, in extreme situations, a free flap. However, a thin cutaneous upper lip defect may require a different approach. Perforator flaps are versatile and may allow an efficient reconstruction of soft tissue defects using adjacent similar tissues, providing the benefit of "like with like" coverage. We present the case of a 41-year-old female with a 1 ×

Maxillomandibulocardiac reflex in a dog.

BACKGROUND: The trigeminocardiac reflex (TCR) is a brainstem reflex that may be observed in anaesthesia during surgical procedures stimulating the intracranial or peripheral portion of the trigeminal nerve. The peripheral TCR is divided into the oculocardiac reflex and the maxillomandibulocardiac reflex based on the affected sensory branches of the trigeminal nerve. In veterinary medicine the oculocardiac reflex has been described, however the maxillomandibulocardiac reflex has never been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: A 5-year-old male Epagneul Breton was presented for surgical management of a

PHACE syndrome with lip haemangioma, microphthalmos and persistent fetal vasculature.

An 11-month-old baby girl presented with white reflex in her left eye. On examination, there was a 6.5×5 mm(2)haemangioma present over her face involving on her lower lip. Systemic examinations were within normal limits. The left eye was small, with an axial length of 16.08 mm and had a cataract. Ultrasonography of the left eye was suggestive of the presence of a vascular stalk, persistent hyperplasia of a primary vitreous, or persistent fetal vasculature with vitreous haemorrhage. On MRI, the left eye was small with vitreous haemorrhage. Left eye lens aspiration was performed and the bleeding

Lower lip repair using double opposing rectangular rotation flaps with reconstruction of the mentolabial groove and mental protuberance.

The use of a rectangular flap is a well known technique for upper lip repair in cleft lip, but is less common for lower lip repair after tumour resection. We have found this type of flap to be favourable for lower lip reconstruction, especially for the lip to mental region. We describe herein an improvement to the technique in which two opposing rectangular flaps, with the length of one side equal to the vertical distance from the mentolabial groove to the vermilion border, were raised on the lateral sides of a U-shaped defect. Reconstruction was performed by interdigitation of the two flaps a

Pediatric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma of lip: a case report and literature review.

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma is listed in the new World Health Organization classification as extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of MALT. Most cases occur predominantly in adults and are rare in children or adolescents. We report, with a review of earlier literature, a MALT lymphoma of the lower lip in a 7-year-old immunocompetent child. The patient had a sessile, indurated, and firm mass on the lower lip without regional lymphadenopathy. Microscopically, dense lymphoid cell infiltrates composed of small- to medium-sized centrocyte-like cells and plasmacytoid cells i

A newborn infant with sternal malformation/vascular dysplasia association.

Sternal malformation/vascular dysplasia complex was described by Hersch et al. in 1985. The principle findings include cleft of the sternum covered by an atrophic skin, a midline abdominal raphe and hemangiomatosis. The inheritance pattern seems to be sporadic. We report a newborn baby with sternal defect, cleft lip and palate, supraumbilical raphe and hemangiomas.

Principles of surgical management of midfacial carcinoma.

A series of large, midfacial, squamous cell and basal cell carcinomas treated by the Departments of Otolaryngology and Dermatology (Cleveland Clinic Foundation) are reported. Most cases required total/partial resection of the external nose, upper lip, hard palate, nasal septum, and adjacent midfacial soft tissues. Emphasis is placed on the principles of preoperative and intraoperative management as it relates to intraoral prosthetic design and total margin control of the surgical specimen. The immediate and delayed reconstructive philosophy and techniques employed here are discussed in detail.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis in multiple joints. Occurrence in a child with cavernous haemangioma of lip and pulmonary stenosis.

A case is presented of pigmented villonodular synovitis involving three joints in a 7-year-old girl. The diagnosis was confirmed at surgery and by histology. The patient also exhibited a haemangioma of the upper lip and a congenital pulmonary stenosis of mild degree. Subtotal synovectomy of the right knee and of both ankles was performed. The lesion recurred in both ankles after 6 months. Review of the literature failed to reveal any previous report of multiple joint involvement by pigmented villonodular synovitis in childhood and it appears that simultaneous involvement of three joints has no

Long-term trends and burden projections of mortality from cancers of the lip, oral cavity, and pharynx in the United States, 1999-2023: a retrospective study.

OBJECTIVES: To examine mortality trends and disparities in cancers of the lip, oral cavity, and pharynx (LOCP) among adults in the United States. METHOD AND MATERIALS: Underlying cause-of-death data (ICD-10 C00-C14) were analyzed for LOCP cancers among adults aged ≥ 25 years from 1999 to 2023 using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research database (CDC WONDER). Age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMR) were standardized to the 2000 US standard population. Joinpoint regression estimated annual percent change (APC) and average annual percent c
