Gomori's metal precipitate technique was used to demonstrate the phosphatase activity of the human cervical lymph node in health and disease … es, the internodular tissue being negative with all four substrates used. With chronic non-specific lymphadenitis the enzyme hydrolysing the three substrates (beta-glycerophosphate, riboflavin 5'-phosphate and adenosine triphosphate) began to make their appearance. It seems that with lymphadenitis, a qualitative change of the phosphatase activity takes place. A …

An 18-year-old man with an ulceration of his right tonsil and cervical lymphadenopathy was examined. The patient also had a papular eruption in his face, chest, abdomen, and upper extremities. There were no signs of genital involvement. Routine serological tests for syphilis were reactive and histological findings of a cervical lymph node biopsy were characteristic for syphilitic lymphadenitis. Spirochetes were also identified in the tissue sections. A diagnosis of secondary syphilis of the tonsil with cervical syphilitic lymphadenitis was made. In recent years, the number of new cases of syph…

A study of 105 consecutive Nigerian children with palpable cervical lymph nodes was carried out over a 4-year period from January 1983 to January 1987 at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Lagos, Nigeria. In 43 (41%) of these children, the initial diagnosis was non-specific lymphadenitis, in 27 (25.7%) tuberculosis, in 18 (17.1%) lymphoma, in 9 (8.6%) metastasis to cervical lymph nodes, and in 8 (7.6%) sinus histiocytosis. The correlation between clinical assessment and histological findings was good in conditions like tuberculosis, metastasis and lymphoma, fair in chronic non-specific ly…

BACKGROUND: We report a case of fatal congenital toxoplasmosis with maternal infection dated four months before pregnancy in the absence of any specific immunosuppressive condition.
CASE: Ms. D. experienced submaxillary lymphadenitis in February 2018. The medical workup performed revealed an acute T. gondii infection. She became pregnant in June 2018 while she still had adenopathy. The second obstetrical ultrasound, performed at 16 weeks of pregnancy, revealed a fetal death. The research for T. gondii by PCR was positive in the products of conception.
CONCLUSION: Diagnosis of toxoplasmosis s…

UNLABELLED: Cat scratch disease, necrotizing granulomatous lymphadenitis caused by Bartonella henselae, usually benign and self-limited. However, various clinical manifestations and no pathognomonic histopathologic features can lead to misinterpretations and diagnostic disputes. We report a case of cat scratch disease in a 39-yr-old male patient with fever and left axillary lymphadenitis. He had a history of cat bite on the left hand dorsum. On excision, the lymph node showed follicular hyperplasia, stellate microabscesses with a rim of granulomatous inflammation. Warthin-Starry silver stainin…

Common clinical presentations of melioidosis in children include suppurative parotitis, lymphadenitis, skin infection and septicemia with pneumonia. Here we describe three cases with uncommon presentations of melioidosis seen among children attending a university hospital in northeastern Thailand. Two patients presented with pharyngitis and subsequently developed cervical lymphadenitis. Another patient presented with high fever and generalized urticarial rash. A pharyngeal culture in each of the first 2 patients and a blood culture and culture of the discharge from the wound of the third patie…

Recent advances of molecular techniques make diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis rapid and easier comparing to conventional techniques. However, diagnosis for tuberculosis, especially tuberculous pleuritis, tuberculous lymphadenitis and non-pulmonary tuberculosis, is not easy. Transbroncheal lung biopsy (TBLB) is a helpful examination for not only pulmonary tuberculosis but also malignant diseases. The pleural biopsy using Cope needle was commonly used as a method for diagnosis of tuberculous pleuritis, and the sensitivity of pleural biopsy is about 50% or more. Furthermore, the pleural biopsy…

The histiocytoses, whether reactive or neoplastic, can be related histologically and immunophenotypically to their normal counterparts within the histiocytic system. This system has two subsets: The dendritic (antigen-presenting) cells and the phagocytic histiocytic (antigen-processing) cells. Dermatopathic lymphadenitis and Langerhans cell histiocytosis (histiocytosis X) are reactive proliferative disorders of dendritic cells. Malignancies of dendritic cells exist, but they are very rare. Benign proliferations of phagocytic histiocytes include the hemophagocytic syndromes, both familial and r…

97 cases of acute necrotizing granulomatous lymphadenitis (so called "reticulozytärabszedierende Lymphadenitis") were examined retrospectively with the Warthin-Starry stain, in order to detect bacteria in patients with cat-scratch disease (CSD). 27 patients with CSD were found and among those, bacteria were demonstrated in 4. The organisms were pleomorphic rods of about 3 micron length and occurred in clumps within foci of fresh necrosis. We found the organisms in a much lower percentage than has been described in the literature. The reasons may be that many of our patients had antimicrobial t…

Sarcoidosis is a systemic disease characterized by noncaseating granulomas involving any organ. Concurrent carcinoma breast with sarcoidosis is a rare occurrence. A 51-year-old female presented with right breast lump and was diagnosed with infiltrating ductal carcinoma with lymph nodal (LN) metastases (estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor positive, and HER2neu negative). Baseline fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG PET/CT) scan revealed breast mass with multiple LNs. Biopsy of iliac and internal mammary LNs indicated granulomatous lymphadenitis. A possi…

The purpose of our study is to emphasize the central role of ultrasound (US) in finding the cause of abdominal pain in children. Ultrasound of the lower abdomen quadrant should be considered in all cases in which the clinical signs and symptoms are not diagnostic of appendicitis. There is a wide range of clinical syndromes and diseases which can easily be diagnosed using a high resolution ultrasound with adjunct of color and power Doppler. The spectrum of abnormalities includes appendicitis, mesenteric lymphadenitis, infectious ileocecitis, Crohn's disease, intussusception, ovarian cysts, and …

The purpose of this report is to emphasize the criteria for recognizing the benign diseases such as viral lymphadenitis, necrotizing lymphadenitis, cat scratch disease, etc, in which a proliferation of immunoblasts is evident, and to discuss the criteria for distinguishing these diseases from neoplastic and atypical proliferations of immunoblasts. In this report, we use the term "immunoblasts" for transformed lymphoid cells of medium and large size. These cells may or may not have abundant quantities of cytoplasm, which may or may not be deeply staining. These immunoblasts may be of the B or t…

Several items characterize the papular acrodermatitis: 1. the clinical picture and the localisation 2. inguinal and axillary lymphadenitis 3. acute usually anicteric hepatitis 4. presence of hepatitis B antigen in all patients. Other members of the family are carriers of HB-Ag, too. One of them usually had icteric hepatitis weeks before or after PAC. At present we consider PAC as the clinical disease due to the primary infection of HB-Ag in childhood. The cycle of HB Ag is shown in a scheme. It suggests why the disease is rare, asymptomatic infections occurring in the majority of the cases. It…
