Maternal magnesium deficiency in mice leads to maternal metabolic dysfunction and altered lipid metabolism with fetal growth restriction.

Inadequate magnesium (Mg) intake is a widespread problem, with over 50% of women of reproductive age consuming less than the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA). Because pregnancy increases the requirement for Mg and the beneficial effects of magnesium sulfate for preeclampsia/eclampsia and fetal neuroprotection are well described, we examined the outcomes of Mg deficiency during pregnancy. Briefly, pregnant Swiss Webster mice were fed either control or Mg-deficient diets starting on gestational day (GD) 6 through euthanasia on GD17. Mg-deficient dams had significantly reduced weight gain and

Magnesium deficiency promotes muscle weakness, contributing to the risk of sudden infant death (SIDS) in infants sleeping prone.

A review was published (1991) of 19 retrospective case-control studies that had investigated the relationship between prone sleeping positio … normal infants can spontaneously arouse and turn their heads. Some data support the hypothesis that magnesium deficiency contributes to SIDS. Muscle strength is seriously impaired in the young magnesium deficient subject, while magnesium rapidly reverses muscle weakness. In rats, marginal deprivation in dietary magnesium reduces exercise capacity, an early effect of m …

Enhanced tumor necrosis factor-alpha production following endotoxin challenge in rats is an early event during magnesium deficiency.

Magnesium (Mg) plays an essential role in fundamental cellular reactions and the importance of the immuno-inflammatory processes in the pathology of Mg deficiency has been recently reconsidered. The purpose of the present study was to assess the effect of different stages of Mg deficiency on endotoxin response and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF alpha) production. Weaning male Wistar rats were pair fed either a Mg-deficient or a control diet. At day 7, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced no lethal effects in control rats but resulted in 70% mortality in Mg-deficient rats within 3 h. The vulnerab

Mechanisms of the enhanced contractile response to phenylephrine in thoracic aorta isolated from rats with dietary magnesium deficiency.

The mechanisms underlying the enhanced contractile response to phenylephrine (PE) and increased susceptibility to nifedipine of de-endothelialized thoracic aorta isolated from rats with dietary magnesium deficiency (Mg-deficient rats) were examined by functional and radioligand binding studies. Enhanced PE-induced contractions and increased susceptibility to nifedipine in Mg-deficient rats were not observed in the presence of 10 microM H7. PE significantly decreased the KD value without changing Bmax in the binding of [3H]PN200-110 to de-endothelialized aortic strips. The KD value obtained in …

The Magnesium Membrane Shield Technique: A Structured and Simplified Approach for Severe Buccal Bone Deficiency in the Aesthetic Zones.

Alveolar ridge preservation and regeneration remain critical challenges in implant dentistry and periodontics. This article presents a minimally invasive surgical approach for the management of complex buccal bone deficiencies using a novel biodegradable magnesium membrane. The Magnesium Membrane Shield Technique is designed to provide mechanical stability while gradually resorbing, thereby avoiding the need for secondary surgery and the additional morbidity associated with it. Its degradation involves the release of Mg2+ ions, which have been reported to modulate biological processes relevant

Quantitative Proteomic Analysis of the Response to Zinc, Magnesium, and Calcium Deficiency in Specific Cell Types of Arabidopsis Roots.

The proteome profiles of specific cell types have recently been investigated using techniques such as fluorescence activated cell sorting and laser capture microdissection. However, quantitative proteomic analysis of specific cell types has not yet been performed. In this study, to investigate the response of the proteome to zinc, magnesium, and calcium deficiency in specific cell types of Arabidopsis thaliana roots, we performed isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantification (iTRAQ)-based quantitative proteomics using GFP-expressing protoplasts collected by fluorescence-activated cell

Magnesium-deficient high-fat diet: effects on adiposity, lipid profile and insulin sensitivity in growing rats.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: To determine if magnesium deficiency aggravates the effects of a high-fat diet in growing rats in terms of obesity, lipid profile and insulin resistance. METHODS: The study population comprised 48 newly weaned male Wistar Hannover rats distributed into four groups according to diet, namely, control group (CT; n = 8), control diet provided ad libitum; pair-feeding control group (PF; n = 16), control diet but in the same controlled amount as animals that received high-fat diets; high-fat diet group (HF; n = 12), and magnesium-deficient high-fat diet group (HFMg(-); n = 12). Eats roots and leaves. Can edible horticultural crops address dietary calcium, magnesium and potassium deficiencies?

Human individuals require at least 20 inorganic elements ('minerals') for normal functioning. However, much of the world's population is probably deficient in one or more essential minerals and at increased risk of physiological disorders. Addressing these 'hidden hungers' is a challenge for the nutrition and agriculture sectors. Mineral deficiencies among populations are typically identified from dietary surveys because (1) minerals are acquired primarily from dietary sources and (2) (bio)assays of mineral status can be unreliable. While dietary surveys are likely to under-report energy intak

Alterations in growth plate and articular cartilage morphology are associated with reduced SOX9 localization in the magnesium-deficient rat.

Insufficient dietary magnesium (Mg) intake has been associated with low bone mass in humans, and recent basic science studies have indicated that this bone loss may be secondary to increased release of substance P and TNFc Much less is known about the effects of low Mg intake on cartilage. We have evaluated growth plate and articular cartilage in rats following a 6 month dietary Mg restriction. Histomorphometry demonstrated significantly decreased distal femur articular cartilage chondrocyte density and decreased tibial growth plate width in experimental animals compared to controls. Growth pla

The absorption of iron, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, copper and zinc in the jejunum-ileum of control and iron-deficient rats.

The effects of iron deficiency on the absorption of different dietary sources of iron were studied, together with the interactions between iron, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, copper and zinc in the jejunum-ileum of control and iron-deficient rats. In this study, three perfusion solutions containing different iron sources: ferric citrate, haemoglobin, and equal parts of ferric citrate and haemoglobin were used. In addition, the same perfusion solutions were used with and without 2,4-dinitrophenol, an inhibitor of oxidative phosphorylation. Iron absorption in anaemic rats was greater than in t

A magnesium-deficient high fructose diet augments bone-sparing action of exogenous oestrogen in ovariectomized rats.

To investigate interactions between circulating oestrogen, high dietary fructose, and low dietary magnesium on bone mineral density and numbers of trabeculae, 10 week old ovariectomized (OVX) and sham-ovariectomized (SOVX) rats were studied. The OVX animals were divided into three groups: one-third of the animals were injected with beta-oestradiol-3-benzoate dissolved in sesame oil twice a week; another one-third were injected with testosterone cypionate; and the remaining OVX and all of the SOVX animals were injected with sesame oil only. One-half of the animals in each group were fed cornsta

[Changes in the suppressive activity of splenic lymphocytes of mice induced in vitro by sodium periodate during magnesium deficiency].

Male DBA/2 Mice were kept on a magnesium deficient diet or a control diet. The antibody response of spleen cells, after in vitro immunization with Sheep red blood cells (SRBC) was determined comparatively in the two groups of Mice, from the 19th to the 22nd day of the diet. The effect of sodium periodate treatment on the induction of in vitro antibody suppressor cells was also studies. This treatment activated suppressor cells towards anti-SRBC response in the control group, but not in the Mg-deficient group (P less than 0.002). A greater sensitivity of periodate induced T suppressor cells to

Association of magnesium deficiency, tobacco smoke exposure and hypertension in children and adolescents: evidence from the NHANES 2007-2018.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies suggested that the combination of tobacco smoke exposure (TSE) and dietary nutrients intake may be related to a higher or lower risk of hypertension. However, the relationship between dietary magnesium (Mg) intake, TSE and the odds of hypertension remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the association of TSE, dietary Mg intake and the odds of hypertension among children and adolescents. METHOD: Data of this study were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) 2007-2018. Dietary Mg intake was calculated as the average of two

Auxin Acts Downstream of Ethylene and Nitric Oxide to Regulate Magnesium Deficiency-Induced Root Hair Development in Arabidopsis thaliana.

This study examines the association of auxin with ethylene and nitric oxide (NO) in regulating the magnesium (Mg) deficiency-induced root hair development in Arabidopsis thaliana. With Mg deficiency, both ethylene and NO promoted the elevation of root auxin levels in roots by inducing the expression of AUXIN-RESISTANT1 (AUX1), PIN-FORMED 1 (PIN1) and PIN2 transporters. In turn, auxin stimulated ethylene and NO production by activating the activities of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) oxidase (ACO), ACC synthase (ACS), nitrate reductase (NR) and NO synthase-like (NOS-L). These processes

Sulla carnosa modulates root invertase activity in response to the inhibition of long-distance sucrose transport under magnesium deficiency.

Being the principal product of photosynthesis, sucrose is involved in many metabolic processes in plants. As magnesium (Mg) is phloem mobile, an inverse relationship between Mg shortage and sugar accumulation in leaves is often observed. Mg deficiency effects on carbohydrate contents and invertase activities were determined in Sulla carnosa Desf. Plants were grown hydroponically at different Mg concentrations (0.00, 0.01, 0.05 and 1.50 mM Mg) for one month. Mineral analysis showed that Mg contents were drastically diminished in shoots and roots mainly at 0.01 and 0.00 mM Mg. This decline was a
